New e-Book: How to Avoid 7 Medicare Traps

For those turning 65 the path to Medicare enrollment is filled with bumps and traps that can end up meaning higher health care costs for retirees. iQuote.com’s new booklet: Getting Ready for Medicare: How to Avoid 7 Medicare Traps can help people avoid mistakes and missed deadlines when enrolling for Medicare and selecting a Medicare health plan.

Medicare terms can be confusing. iQuote.com finds people are often confused about how to sign up, when to sign up and then how to compare different Medicare plan choices. The new booklet is designed especially for those who are getting ready to sign up for Medicare or choosing a Medicare health plan. It identifies some of the terms, deadlines and choices that, if missed, can end up increasing the cost of health care coverage in retirement.

Some of the traps include missing Medicare enrollment dates, misunderstanding deadlines, staying on COBRA too long and failing to understand the costs of Medicare and how to compare plans to find the right Medicare plan.

The booklet can be downloaded at www.medicare.iquote.com/medicare-resources-links.aspx.

‘The Economic Downturn’ Leads To £1bn Worth Of Angst

Anti-depressant and anxiety drug use has risen 26 per and cost the health service over £1billion since the start of the economic downturn in 2007, according to recent research.

A study by The Co-operative Pharmacy into antidepressant and anxiety drug dispensing across over 150 primary care trusts in England found that in 2010/11 49.8 million items were prescribed, up from 39.5 million items in 2007/08.

However, costs have fallen – down 12 percent from almost £291million in 2007/08, to£258 million in 2010/11.

In 2010/11, the North West had the highest usage of anti-depressants and anxiety medication, with over 8 million items prescribed. It was followed by East of England (5.7m) and Yorkshire and Humber (5.45m) The biggest increase in use over the last four years has been in the East Midlands up 44 percent from 3 to 4.4million items followed by the North East, up 29 percent from 2.7 to 3.5 million items.

Findings by The Co-operative Pharmacy revealed that between 2007/08 and 2010/11 the NHS has spent £1.071billion on prescribed anti-depressants and anxiety drugs. It has also funded a further £1.073billon on drugs for treating psychoses and other related disorders.

Mandeep Mudhar, NHS Business Director, The Co-operative Pharmacy, said: “Our research has shown that the NHS is getting greater value for money but worryingly prescription items have risen at an alarming rate, up 26 per cent in just four years.

“It is clear more people are seeking medical help to treat depression and anxiety. However, there are many more people who do not share their experiences. If people do feel depressed we urge them to seek medical help.”

The research found that citalopram hydrobromide was the most common anti-depressant medication (12.1million items prescribed in 2010/11) followed by amitriptyline HCl (8.8 million prescription items). 5.2 million items of fluoxetine (known commonly as Prozac) were prescribed in 2010/11.

Diazepam was the most widely prescribed drug for anxiety (1.5 million items prescribed in 2010/11).

Emer O’Neill, Chief Executive of Depression Alliance, said: “For some people depression just happens, but for others it is triggered by stressful events, for example losing a job, property or bereavement. These uncertain economic times are linked to an increase in the number of people with the illness.

“However, this is just the tip of the iceberg, as for every person diagnosed with depression there are many more who suffer in silence. Getting an early diagnosis, finding the right support mechanisms and treatment for each individual is crucial to beating the illness. At this time of year, many individuals can feel lonely or isolated but there are a range of support groups available to help with depression. Talking about your feelings is the first step to getting help whether it’s making them known to a friend or family member. It is also important to speak to a healthcare professional such as your GP or pharmacist who can help you to find the best way forward.”

(PJCCE), in partnership with the Alameda Boys & Girls Club and Alameda Head Start will host a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Alameda Boys & Girls Club, 1900 3rd Street in Alameda as it launches services of the PJCCE Breathmobile®, a 33ft pediatric mobile asthma clinic, in the City of Alameda. The press conference and ceremony will start at 10:00am and will include members of the Alameda School Board, City elected officials, Alameda Head Start representatives, Alameda County representatives, and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Light refreshments will be provided.

Event: Breathmobile ® Press Conference & Ribbon Cutting
Friday, January 20, 2012
10:00am – 10:30am
Alameda Boys & Girls Club
1900 3rd Street, Alameda

Asthma rates for children in the City of Alameda, and particularly at Alameda Point are high in the 0-5 age group. Many families do not have insurance to access regular asthma health care,” says Washington Burns, MD, Executive Director of the Breathmobile. “We are happy to be partnering with the Alameda Head Start and Alameda Boys and Girls Club.” Dr. Burns was contacted in 2011 by Daniel Javes of Alameda Head Start, after Javes concerned about asthma rates in Head Start children, had heard about the work the Breathmobile was doing at schools in Oakland. Javes contacted Dr. Burns and said that the Boys and Girls Club would be a perfect site in Alameda to see children with asthma. Javes suggested he should contact George Phillips, Executive Director of the Alameda Boys & Girls Club, which he did. “The Breathmobile fits right in with our other health care initiatives like our dental clinic.” says George Phillips, the Club’s Executive Director, “It allows us to offer convenient access to services they might not otherwise use and will help us realize our goal of instilling healthy lifestyle habits in the children of our community.”

The Breathmobile®, the first of its kind in Northern California is owned and operated by PJCCE and is a 33 ft. Winnebago RV outfitted with the latest equipment to function as a pediatric mobile asthma clinic. Inside the van, there are an intake station, a small waiting space, a testing area for vital signs including Oximetry, allergen skin testing and spirometry, and an exam room. On board are two computer systems, the first has a health risk assessment system for asthma, and a screening module for pre-diabetes, and the other system is a state of the art electronic medical records system called “AsmaTrax.” Asthma and allergy specialists on-board include Pediatric Allergists, Registered Nurses, and Respiratory Therapists. A video system is also on board to play educational videos and CDs. Services are provided in English and Spanish, and are available at no cost to children and families. The Breathmobile® will also provide services at the Matheson Head Start in Alameda Point.

The Breathmobile’s® mission is to reduce the effects of asthma among economically challenged families by providing a sustainable, accessible asthma management program that will focus on regular preventive care, thereby shifting families away from acute episodic and emergency care.

There are other Breathmobiles® operating throughout the US, including Los Angeles, Orange County, Chicago, Baltimore, University of Alabama, and Phoenix, Arizona. All of these units form a national collaborative organization linked by a computer system located at USC to study and improve the effective treatment and management of asthma. Collaborative studies of Breathmobile® units in Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles and Orange counties in Southern California show a dramatic 73% reduction in Emergency Room visits and hospitalizations of asthma children being served by their Breathmobiles®. In its two years of operation, the PJC Breathmobile® has shown significant decrease in emergency room visits from 122 to 2, asthmarelated hospitalizations from 63 to 1, and school absences from 351 days to 17.

“There are so many diseases that we cannot control, but asthma is a controllable disease,“ says Dr. Burns, “By having the Breathmobile®, we can drastically reduce emergency room visits, hospitalizations, school absenteeism, reduce medical costs, and decrease morbidity and mortality of asthma by teaching patients how to control their children’s asthma. We are also increasing children’s academic performance.”

Med-Q Introduces Tool to Reduce Medication Errors

When Lee DeMar was running a Phoenix-based nursing agency, he constantly heard his nurses voice their frustration over the fact that many of their older clients were not taking their medications when they should and as a result cycling back to the ER (the nurses worked exclusively at hospitals). Known as medication non-compliance (or non-adherence), it is the failure to take prescription medication on time and in the dosages prescribed.

Medication non-compliance — which has been called America’s “other drug problem” by The New York Times — results in an estimated $290 billion in emergency room visits and other avoidable medical expenses and health crises. These medication errors account for 10 percent of all hospital admissions, and is attributed to at least 125,000 deaths annually, according to the New England Healthcare Institute.

DeMar immediately recognized the urgency of this growing problem and through his company, Med-Q, developed the Med-Q Pillbox, an innovative solution to the challenges of medication non-compliance. The unit retails for $49.95 and is being launched at a special introductory price of $39.95.

Featuring a unique modern design, the Med-Q Pillbox is unlike any pill organizer on the market. It is a self-contained, “all-in-one” electronic weekly organizer, reminder and dispenser. According to DeMar, “The Med-Q Pillbox features a user-friendly design and multipurpose functionality to assist a wide range of individuals taking daily medications and vitamins.”

The Med-Q Pillbox consists of 14 days’ worth of roomy, individualized compartments to accommodate once a day (for 14 days) or twice a day (for 7 days) medication regimens. Each individual compartment is specially fitted with large flip-up tabs for easy opening and can hold the equivalent of up to 30 regular-size aspirins. Additionally, each compartment can be removed from the pillbox base eliminating the potential to spill pills from other compartments that may not be closed securely. An extra large LED makes it easier to program and see the day, time and “next alert.”

Med-Q’s electronic dual reminder system, according to DeMar “is a technology and design breakthrough for individuals and families trying to adhere to daily medication regimens and live a medically-independent life.”

Powered by two AA batteries, the Med-Q Pillbox combines advanced audio and visual alarms, and may be programmed to fit any schedule. The audio alarm, available in one- or two-beep options, cascades in volume and is loud enough to be heard through a nightstand drawer. The visual alarm utilizes LED-Lightbox Technologyâ„¢ to illuminate individual compartments with a flashing light and indicates which pills to take.

The goal of the Med-Q Pillbox is to reduce medication errors. For more information or to purchase the Med-Q Pillbox, please visit www.medqpillbox.com or call 480-648-4977.

Forza To Build New Factory In Kent

Forza has announced that plans have been drawn up for the building of a new factory in Kent.

The factory will be using the latest technology and machinery to ensure consistency within the manufacturing processes of Forza’s health supplement products, including slimming pills. All of the company’s ingredients are blended for over 24 hours to ensure that each and every capsule is identical. More of Forza’s products will have branded capsules so that the customer understands that from purchase to consumption, Forza is looking out for them.

Matt Morgan CEO, Forza Group Ltd, said: “Forza is delighted to announce that we will open a new cutting-edge facility in Kent. All of our products are made to GMP standards and our customers can continue to expect the very best weight loss and wellbeing products from Forza. As one of the fastest-growing health supplement companies in the UK, this news is further evidence of our continuing success.”

Kent was an obvious choice for the company when deciding on the location for the new factory due to it being a transport hub. Forza has a growing customer base in Germany and being close to the ports means that its deliveries can arrive faster than if they were dispatched from any other part of the country. In addition, Forza’s directors have been able to make much better use of the Eurostar and Le Shuttle services for meetings in northern Europe, allowing the brand to expand into new markets.

The factory is the latest investment Forza has made into its services and follows the opening of a new Fulfilment Centre in Ashford, Kent. The Centre operates solely to distribute Forza products to retail and trade customers in the UK and Europe. With this new facility the company is able to handle the growing number of packages that are being dispatched daily. From its old Fulfilment office, it could handle 350 packages a day but now that Forza sell trade packs and the retail demand has increased the company is committed to continuous reinvesting in its infrastructure.

The Co-operative Magazine Outlines Health Services for Ramadan

The Co-operative Magazine has this week published information on the healthcare services that are available at The Co-operative Pharmacy stores during the Muslim festival of Ramadan.

The Magazine gives its readers the chance to take advantage of the knowledge, expertise and experience of pharmacists at The Co-operative Pharmacy during this important religious festival. Readers are given more information on how to participate safely in Ramadan, Hajj and Umrah, and given details of the dedicated healthcare service for Muslims across the UK.

The article states that specially trained pharmacists will be working at 84 branches of The Co-operative Pharmacy, available to give specific advice and support on all aspects of observing the practices of Ramadan, Hajj and Umrah safely.

Specialist help will include guidance on how to manage regular, orally-administered medication during the period of fasting, as well as advice on how to stop smoking and what vaccinations are necessary for those preparing for Hajj. The Co-operative understands that Ramadan is a good time to beat addiction as those observing the practices of the festival are required to abstain completely from food and resist all temptations during daylight hours.

Business development director at The Co-operative, Mandeep Mudhar, said: “We appreciate the importance of cultural understanding and sensitivity when discussing the implications of healthcare on people’s religious beliefs. But our trained pharmacists are here to help with this and with the preparations leading up to Hajj or Umrah.”

Once Ramadan is over, The Co-operative Pharmacy will focus on giving the meningococcal vaccine, as well as specialist health advice for those making the pilgrimage to Mecca. The Co-operative Pharmacy will be working with Novartis Vaccines and The Muslim Council of Britain to offer meningococcal vaccination (ACWY) packages to Muslim pilgrims.

Enabling microRNA Discoveries – 250th Peer-Reviewed Publication Made Possible By µparaflo Custom Microarray Technology

LC Sciences, a life sciences company leading the development of innovative microRNA (miRNA) analysis and discovery technologies, announced today the publication of over 250 peer-reviewed studies using the company’s microarray service for analyzing miRNA expression profiles. These studies, by leading researchers in the field, represent significant steps toward realizing these small regulatory RNA’s potential as biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

MiRNAs have proven to be an extremely important part of the gene expression regulation mechanism of a wide variety of cellular processes. This is evident in the amount of relevant findings by LC Sciences’ customers being translated into published reports and the diverse range of study areas that these publications encompass: cancer research, neuroscience, cardiovascular research, reproductive biology, plant science, microbiology, immunology and stem cell research. LC Sciences’ miRNA profiling service, powered by its µParaflo® custom microarray technology, provides quick, reliable, fully analyzed datasets enabling researchers to immediately move forward with groundbreaking research.

The miRNA field is still nascent, and it is advancing rapidly. The race to discovery has produced a continuous stream of new miRNA sequences as well as routine revisions of inaccurate or incomplete sequences. This fluidity has caused many microarrays with static content to fall away and has fueled reports of the wholesale replacement of microarrays by new methods such as RNA-Seq. But the nimble, customizable format of the µParaflo® array has given it staying power, not only by enabling it to keep current with all known miRNAs, but also by making use of data generated by RNA-Seq. These custom arrays have benefited from RNA-sequencing generating novel content that other arrays are unable to capture and take advantage of.

The 250th study, entitled “Wolbachia uses host microRNAs to manipulate host gene expression and facilitate colonization of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti.” appeared in the May 31st issue of PNAS and was one of a group of articles published recently by LC Sciences’ customers describing microarray expression analysis of miRNAs recently discovered through RNA Sequencing.

New Online Resource for Insulin Dependent Diabetics

Insulin dependent diabetics now have a new online resource designed specifically for them. The resource, the LongActingInsulin.com blog, scours the web for news and views of interest to both type 1 and type 2 diabetics to provide them with a “one stop-shop” for advice, entertainment and information.

“People are busy,” says the new blog’s editor, Lynn Woods, “They don’t have time to surf the web after work to see what’s interesting or important in the world of diabetes research, so we do it for them. Some of our blog posts are entertaining, most are educational, and many contain valuable up-to-the-minute information on diabetes.”

Woods describes the new blog, which launched in January and focuses on users of long acting insulin, as “informal”. “We try to approach diabetes from a positive perspective. We believe that people can not only cope with diabetes, they can thrive with it.”

A quick look through the blog showcases its diversity: an article about diabetes-sniffing dogs that warn their owners when their blood sugar gets low, FAQs about insulin pumps, tips on giving insulin injections to your cat, a diabetic-friendly lemon cheesecake recipe, stories about celebrities with diabetes, a prescription coupon offering $10 savings on Lantus SoloSTAR long acting insulin, and a wealth of current information on diabetes research and diabetes medication.

Unexpectedly, the article Kudzu Used as Diabetes Medication in Chinese Medicine has attracted the most readers by far, says Woods. Other popular diabetes blog articles involve recent developments in non-invasive blood glucose monitors and super-long-acting insulin, and advice on giving insulin injections to cats.

Diabetes affects almost 26 million Americans, over 8% of the population. Of those 26 million, an estimated 7 million remain undiagnosed. Diabetes is an incurable and progressive disease with serious complications, and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

New Report on Fighting Chronic Disease Examines the Importance of Non-Communicable Diseases in Global Health Care

In the first of a series of new reports, a coalition of pharmaceutical industry trade organizations outlines the serious burden that chronic diseases place on patients and global health care systems.“Fighting Chronic Disease: Importance of Non-communicable Diseases” is the first of four reports that look at this growing issue for patients and health care systems around the world.

The report was compiled by the European Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations, the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, and the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers Association. Together, these organizations highlight the powerful role that public-private partnerships can play in mitigating the burden of chronic disease. Non-communicable diseases like stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and cancers can often strain global health care resources, and targeting the main risk factors of these conditions can significantly reduce the burden of these diseases worldwide.

Most NCDs are preventable because they are caused by modifiable risk factors, which include poor diet, lack of physical activity and tobacco use. Every year, more than 5 million people die because of direct tobacco use and 2.8 million die from being overweight or obese. High cholesterol accounts for 2.6 million deaths and 7.5 million die because of elevated blood pressure. Individually, chronic disease lowers quality of life for those affected, causes premature deaths and negatively impacts the economic solvency of families, communities and nations. Interventions that focus on better diet, increased physical activity and access to vaccines have been proven to decrease the incidence of chronic disease and improve quality of life.

The pharmaceutical industry has long recognized the economic and social burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and has been working with governments, health care providers, patients groups and other stakeholders as an active solution partner in lessening this burden. The industry promotes and supports health prevention and promotion strategies and patient-centered approaches to managing chronic conditions and their risk factors. At the same time the global biopharmaceutical industry leads the search for new cures and the research and development of new medicines to treat or prevent non-communicable diseases. There are currently thousands of medicines either in clinical trials or awaiting approval to treat NCDs. The great challenge in preventing and controlling NCDs on a global scale is finding patient-centered solutions that reduce the burden on global health care services by promoting individual healthy lifestyles.

The R&D-based pharmaceutical industry works to improve the health and quality of life of all patients, and is committed to continuing partnerships that tackle these complex issues including extensive investment in R&D programs dedicated to the development of new NCD preventative and treatment products. Both prevention and treatment play an important role in addressing the problem of non-communicable diseases.

Will the Catholic Church & the U.S. Courts Embrace Advanced Cell Technologies “Embryo-Safe” Technique Using Embryonic Stem Cells?

Advanced Cell Technology with laboratory facilities in Marlborough Massachusetts has pioneered a solution to the ethical, moral & legal debate raging in regards to protection of a human embryo. ACT has developed the “single-blastomere” technique. Patent Number 7,893,315 a non-destructive alternative for deriving human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines.

This achievement in Regenerative medicine is a ground breaking feat for both Catholic and U.S. law.
• The 1995 encyclical The Gospel of Life, of which Pope John Paul II wrote: “Human embryos obtained in vitro are human beings and are subjects with rights; their dignity and right to life must be respected from the first moment of their existence. It is immoral to produce human embryos destined to be exploited as disposable ‘biological material'” (1,5 )
• The Dickey Amendment (also known as the Dickey-Wicker Amendment) is the name of an appropriation bill rider attached to a bill passed by United States Congress in 1995, and signed by former President Bill Clinton, which prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from using appropriated funds for the creation of human embryos for research purposes or for research in which human embryos are destroyed.

The single-blastomere technology uses a one-cell biopsy approach similar to pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which is widely used in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process and does not interfere with the embryo’s developmental potential. The stem cells generated using this approach are healthy, completely normal, and differentiate into all the cell types of the human The safety record for one-cell biopsy as part of PGD now has a 15-year track record, and is carried out routinely as part of IVF processes around the world. ACT’s technique of protecting the human embryo from harm can be expounded to the smallest blood transfusion in the world. As does a human being give millions of blood cells in a pint of blood so does ACT’s “single blastomere” process take but “one cell” from a 2 day old embryo. As the blood removed from a human donor “regenerate” the removed pint of blood so does the human embryo “regenerate” the one cell. Both of these procedures leave the human body & two day old embryo healthy. Both procedures are similar in that they both provide life saving material to those whom need them most to due to disease and other aliments of a medical nature.

Global Health Progress Releases Non-Communicable Diseases Partnerships and Programs List

Global Health Progress compiled a list of non-communicable disease treatment programs from around the world, highlighting partnerships to address cancer treatment, diabetes care, epilepsy programs and more. The programs, sponsored by leading companies like Astra Zeneca, Abbott, Novo Nordisk, and Bayer Healthcare, aim to increase awareness of non-communicable diseases in the developing world.

“Our goal in creating this list is to bring awareness to these companies who work so hard at fighting diseases in developing countries,” explains Mark Grayson, Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs at PhRMA and key developer in the Global Health Progress initiative. “Non-communicable diseases are the leading killer in many of these countries, and without the help of these programs they would continue to increase.”

Global Health Progress works with partner groups to encourage and sustain funding for the research and development of healthcare in developing nations. Improving health care systems and access to medicines, especially in the developing world, requires multifaceted approaches and solutions. Research-based biopharmaceutical companies are active partners in some of the largest and boldest health initiatives that explore new and effective ways to provide treatment, care and education to millions of people in developing countries.
