Five Years After Iraq War’s Official End, a New York Community Is Still Healing

NEW YORK, NY, 2017-Jan-14 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — As the Iraq War’s official end in December 2011 marks its fifth anniversary, many questions remain on its fallouts. New York’s French-American community is one of them, as it remembers its blacklisting when France opted out of attacking Iraq.

Choosing diplomatic pressure rather than “shock and awe” ignited fury for many in New York. The call for anti-French boycotts resonated in tabloids as pictures of New Yorkers spilling wines in gutters vied with accusations of an ally’s betrayal and cowardice. Information can be found by searching for “New York’s anti-French boycotts and Iraq,” and “Freedom fries.”

How effective were the boycotts? “Very much so, even devastating,” says French consulate’s official physician and mental health coordinator at the time, Gérard Sunnen, MD, “the French-American community of New York was stunned by their virulence and persistence. Why, many wondered, did they materialize only in New York, in striking contrast to the rest of the country?”

“Targeted were all manner of French-American businesses, from Air France to bakeries, as rosters of marked companies circulated widely. Earliest felled were restaurants, whose sales plummeted by as much as half. Like dominoes, they closed their doors, dismissing their workers. Called by many the “consulate’s darkest hour,” it went on for interminable months, years, and still resonates today.”

“As layoffs mounted,” Dr. Sunnen added, “so did their mental health consequences, from all manner of stress reactions to self-destructive depressions. And workers suddenly out of work could not find employment because no one would take them. The consulate’s social services department work load soared to levels never attained before.”

Faced with this onslaught, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) was repeatedly contacted to lend the community its medical and mental health assistance. In addition, New York State and city top officials were insistently asked to add their voice to call off the boycotts. All appeals remained unanswered and, for reasons of non-assistance and abandonment of responsibility, this matter was eventually reported and filed in New York and Federal courts.

Dr. Sunnen, who also cites his experience as a Vietnam-era U.S. veteran, concludes, “history needs constant reckoning, otherwise it can remain a fable. These events are now brought to light so that long-term allies can better understand and appreciate the meaning of their special relationship.”

Sway Medical’s app for sports concussion exam received European CE Mark as Medical Device

sway-concussiontest-is-a-validated-ios-app-based-concussion-management-system

TULSA, OK, 08-Sep-2016 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — Sway Medical is a US medical device company who’s software turns an iPhone or iPad into a mobile medical device that provides immediate medical grade, objective concussion measurement to medical professionals.

Sway Medical LLC (Sway) would like to announce its official availability in all European Union Countries. Sway was issued its CE Mark after being marketed in the United States and Canada for two years. This is significant because European sports organizations ranging from youth through pro level now have an affordable and convenient sideline assessment tool supporting concussion related medical decision making. Medical professionals and trained coaches can obtain a concussion assessment via an Apple mobile device (iPhone or iPad) and the Sway Balance™ System web-portal. Acute objective measurements are obtained by performing a 1.5 minute balance and reaction time test protocol. Licensed athletic trainers, physical therapists and athletic therapists are able to join physicians in acutely managing the underserved market of youth sports, ages six and older.

Concussion injuries are very common in sports, often going un-reported or ignored until the obvious symptoms have incapacitated the athlete or draws the attention of a parent or coach. Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) is a serious medical condition with published mortality rates of up to 50%. SIS occurs when an athlete returns to play while still recovering from an initial concussion injury. During this time, the brain is highly susceptible to additional injury and complications. The Sway Balance™ System is able to accurately assess and track the acute and chronic outcome related to an athlete’s balance, motion reaction time and concussion symptoms. The Sway Balance™ System provides a graphical representation comparing suspicious injury event tests against a pre-injury “normative” or baseline score. The comparison of event tests against an established baseline is a common measurement for traumatic brain injury diagnosis and recovery tracking.

The Sway Balance™ System is available for purchase by licensed medical professionals involved in school, occupational or sports medicine through www.swaymedical.com. Additional protocols are available to assess an individual’s “Fall Risk” or “Functional Status”.

“Heart Within a Heart” – Surgery Cures 12 Year Old With Rare Congenital Heart Disease

A 12 year old Indian boy successfully underwent open heart surgery for an extremely rare variant of Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC) at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and Research Institute, Mangadu, Chennai.

Prabhakaran, a ‘blue baby’ born with a heart birth defect seen in only 1 out of every 500,000 births, had 2 “hearts” inside his chest, one within the other. This complexcongenital heart disease is so rare that it merited selection out of 430+ submissions to be presented at the recently concluded international conference of the Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (IACTS) at Mumbai in February 2013.

In an intricate open heart operation that lasted 5 hours, the cardiothoracic surgical team including Dr.S.Sivasubramanian, Dr.S.Visvakumar and Dr.Meenakshisundaram successfully repaired the defect.

Unable to afford the high cost of treatment, Prabhakaran’s widowed mother searched desperately for assistance with her son’s surgery. His operation was sponsored by theDr.Mani Children Heart Foundation, a Chennai-based NGO which has funded 100 heart surgeries for under-privileged children with congenital heart disease since its inception in 2003.

In the defect, a rare intracardiac sub-type of TAPVC, all 4 veins returning oxygen-rich blood from the lungs drained into a common chamber (the “pulmonary confluence”) – forming a mini-heart behind the regular heart.

This mini-heart then pumped blood into the atrium through a hole in the heart called an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), making him a cyanotic ‘blue baby’. Prabhakaran’s surgery was carried out on 16th October 2012. A week later he was discharged from hospital, his lips and fingernails now pink and healthy.

The department of cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and Research Institute, Mangadu, Chennai has successfully carried out more than 75 operations on patients with valve, coronary and congenital heart diseases in the short period since its inception.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is rare, with an estimated incidence of 7 to 8 in 1,000 live births. Surgery is often risky and expensive, yet serious complications can arise if treatment is delayed.

For more information about congenital heart defects (CHD), visit the Dr.Mani Children Heart Foundation website at http://www.CHDinfo.com

Mayo Clinic Leader Joins UHS As President

University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina announced today that Dr. David Herman, a physician leader with the Mayo Clinic, will join UHS as president of the health care system.

Herman currently serves as medical director of the Mayo Clinic Affiliated Practice Network. As UHS president, Herman will be responsible for the health system, including coordinating and integrating health care at all levels of service, from free community screenings and physician practices to local hospitals and tertiary medical care.

Dave McRae, chief executive officer of UHS, said the organization has been moving for some time toward a more integrated system of health care delivery, and Herman will lead that integration.

“Dr. Herman has experience in building a mature, integrated health care delivery system,” McRae said. “His leadership at one of the world’s premiere health care systems will guide us as we prepare for this new world of health care for eastern North Carolina.”

Herman has significant expertise and experience consolidating and integrating physician practice networks, developing formal relationships with national and regional provider groups and building operational structures to serve those relationships.

As director of the Employee and Community Health Program at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Herman worked to develop programs in the community and in the public school system that address chronic illnesses and diseases.

Herman currently is a consultant in ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic and a professor of ophthalmology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He has more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and served as a principle investigator for an NIH grant studying ocular hypertension and glaucoma.

Herman said his decision to relocate to eastern North Carolina was based on great potential to unify a system of care that will be critical in the coming years.

“Few organizations are in the unique position of being able to build a true system of care to address the care needs of the populations they serve,” Herman said. “I am impressed with the people who make up UHS, and I am eager to work with the team to design, execute and demonstrate this new system of health care. I am honored and eager to have a chance to serve in this new capacity.”

Herman currently serves on the board of directors for the Mayo Health System, the board of directors for the Western Region of the Mayo Health System, and is a member of the management team of Mayo Clinic. Herman also served as chair of the Mayo Clinic Rochester Clinical Practice Committee, an executive position similar to the role he will assume at UHS.

He currently serves on the board of directors and the Strategy and Personnel Committees for the Institute of Clinical Systems Improvement, directing the development of guidelines and protocols of care for preventive services, acute and chronic care.

Herman was recently named to the board of trustees of Ronald McDonald House Charities, the international charity that sponsors and supports Ronald McDonald Houses worldwide.

Physician Offers Own Brand Of Affordable Insurance Alternative

Cedar Park family medicine physician Melissa J. Urrea, M.D. believes taking care of your health shouldn’t be a difficult financial decision. And while the recently-signed Health Care Bill mandates that all individuals will be required to obtain health insurance by 2014, that still leaves several years of challenging options on how to best obtain quality medical care. That’s why she recently introduced through her practice, Trinity Family Medicine, a pre-paid package of medical services. Trinity HealthSpan ™ provides access to comprehensive health care to uninsured and underinsured individuals and families.

Nearly one in four Central Texas residents currently lives with inadequate or no health insurance — and that statistic is expected to rise as a result of the recession. Dr. Urrea’s plan helps to  bridge the gap between the need for and access to quality health care services.

For an annual fee of less than $800, Trinity HealthSpan ™ provides:

  • An annual examination (including prostate screening)
  • Lab work (including a complete metabolic panel, diabetes screening, kidney and liver function screening, electrolyte evaluation, complete blood count, anemia evaluation, thyroid function evaluation, cholesterol and lipid panel, urinalysis, urine protein evaluation)
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Tetanus vaccination
  • Influenza vaccination
  • Three routine office visits (including follow up for a particular disease/condition and sick visits)
  • Access to coordinated services (such as labs) at reduced rates

The concept for Trinity HealthSpan ™ originated when Dr. Urrea was challenged with managing the care of chronically ill individuals who had no or limited insurance or were self-employed. “For someone with a condition like diabetes, allergies or asthma, it is imperative to focus not only on disease management, but overall wellness,” said Dr. Urrea. “That involves multiple visits to a physician, along with moderate diagnostic testing to monitor the condition.”

As the recession affected more and more of her patients, Dr. Urrea consulted with her practice’s business manager to determine how they could assist their patients in maintaining regular access to care. The practice reached out to ancillary service providers like laboratories and negotiated reduced rates on behalf of patients who purchase the Trinity HealthSpan ™ package. Trinity HealthSpan ™ also connects patients with pharmacies offering low-cost, generic prescription plans. Local retailers like HEB and Target offer plans that provide medications for as little as $5 a month, which is actually less money than most insurance plan co-pays.

For an uninsured individual not participating in Trinity HealthSpan ™ , the cost of the pre-paid package of services would be $1,050. Similarly, if an insured patient paid an average of $400 per month (not including deductibles and co-pays) in insurance premiums, they could save more than $4,000 annually by enrolling in Trinity HealthSpan ™ . “Even if the patient needed X-rays or an MRI, it would still be less expensive than through their insurance plan,” said Dr. Urrea.

“As a physician and patient, I wanted to bring peace of mind to those individuals and families who can’t afford insurance but deserve state-of-the-art medical services,” added Dr. Urrea. Patients may also purchase “a la carte” customized care packages with fewer services or those related to a specific health condition. Plan financing options are also available.

Trinity Family Medicine provides care for the entire family, including pediatrics, women’s health, men’s health, general medicine, herbal medicine, sleep studies, and cosmetic medicine. House calls are also an option for established patients depending on location.

Dr. Urrea is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). She is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and serves as an associate clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

For more information or to sign up for Trinity HealthSpan ™, call Trinity Family Medicine at 512-258-1645 or visit www.urreamd.com.

The teachings of Bruno Groening (1906-1959), who became world famous due to extraordinary healings in the fifties, are taken as a basis for the lectures. Bruno Groening said time and again: “There is no incurable – God is the greatest physician”. He spoke about a higher power that he called the healing stream, life power or divine energy. This power is abundantly available for everyone. The knowledge about how to make use of this power is passed on free of charge in the worldwide non-profit, volunteer based organization of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends.

The work of the MWF is supported by some well-known people in the United States, e.g. Dr. Christiane Northrup and Dr. Carl Simonton. Link to information online: http://www.bruno-groening.org/english/lectures2009.htm.

Wrongful Convictions Of Physicians By Department Of Health (NYSDOH) Linked To Patient Mortality

The proliferation of wrongful convictions in New York State prompted the NYS Bar Association to create a Blue Ribbon task force to study its systemic, procedural and statutory causes, and to propose solutions. Indeed, a report by the Innocence Project found New York State to be the national leader, outpacing all other states in its rate of wrongful convictions. The Blue Ribbon findings, embodied in a document entitled “ Final Report of the New York State Bar Association’s Task Force on Wrongful Convictions” was unanimously endorsed by the Association’s House of Delegates on April 4.

The findings of the Task Force provide a disturbing commentary on flagrant errors by the New York State judicial system, leading to convictions of innocent individuals. In over 50% of cases, the failures of government practices – such as misconduct by prosecutors – were to blame for the wrongful convictions.

Wrongful convictions do not solely implicate the New York State criminal justice system. They are reportedly rife in the legal practices of the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH), known for ignoring due process and abusing power in its disciplinary actions against physicians. Several bills aiming to redress these inequities were all vetoed. Reported among many of these due process violations is the denying of witnesses for phy sicians’ defense, the use of tainted judges, and the coaching of plaintiffs by prosecutors to lie – indeed, “winning” cases is vital for their career advancement. Especially targeted in these malicious prosecutions are physicians practicing complementary medicine. One physician who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retribution remarked, “Convicting doctors is a cinch: just don’t allow them any witnesses; then the Department is free to make up whatever it wants.”

The tragedy of wrongful convictions in matters of health care affects far more than physicians. The plight of patients suddenly obliged to forgo the continuity of their medical care by the forcible removal of their long term physicians via the challenging of their license is illustrated in press and Internet releases entitled, “Patient Mortality Linked to Judicial Errors.” Noted are certain fragile patients who, “vulnerable, sick, alone, frightened and suddenly deprived of their main lifeline (their physician), became acutely demoralized, refused referrals to other doctors or failed to bond with them, eventually giving up their will to live and neglecting their medical needs.” One physician reported the untimely deaths of 7 patients, including one from suicide, the rapid decline of 8 Alzheimer’s and the relapses of 12 psychiatric patients leading to their serial hospitalizations.”

In response, petitions have now been forwarded to agencies concerned with patient20welfare, calling for independent impact studies on state-ordered patient abandonment. Agencies contacted include the U.S. Health and Human Services Administration (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. The petition has also been sent to Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, NYSDOH.

This landmark study, of major interest to medical, psychiatric and medico-legal communities and the public at large, would aim to show that abruptly severing medical and psychiatric services by state agencies has serious and sometimes fatal consequences for patients – especially patients who are disadvantaged, infirm, chronically ill or psychiatrically disabled. It would also suggest remedial action. Indeed, if state agencies assume the power of terminating the basic care to patients provided for by their physicians, they presumably also should accept the responsibility for adequately supporting said patients through crisis, by providing them with life-saving continuity of care.

Sophisticated, femininely tailored healthcare lab coats get stain-fighting and wrinkle-resistant features from smart fabric technologies

For the first time ever, healthcare industry lab coats get sophisticated, stain-fighting and wrinkle-resistant properties with the combination of DuPont Dual Action Teflon® fabric protector and HIGH IQ® Easycare fabric finish. Designed especially for a woman’s physique, Medelita’s all-cotton women’s lab coats repel and fight stains, while its machine washable fabric maintains a wrinkle-free, professional finish.

“Female healthcare practitioners have worked hard to get where they are in the medical industry, with women now constituting a majority in certain medical specialties,” says Medelita Founder Lara Manchik. “We believe that they deserve a woman’s lab coat that works just as hard as they do, and are extremely proud to be the first to design a flattering women’s lab coat that is also functional. You can’t see it or feel it, but the technology keeps our coats stain-free and sharp, right out of the dryer.

“In the medical field, image is as important as aptitude.”

As a female emergency room Physician Assistant, Manchik’s own experiences convinced her that the frumpy unisex garb of past failed to convey clinical competence and professionalism. To outfit her female colleagues with attire befitting their tireless efforts, clinician-turned-entrepreneur, Manchik created Medelita as a departure from the boxy doctor’s lab coats – made for the male figure and representative of a time when men dominated all clinical fields of medicine.

The Medelita lab coat is designed to repel fluids, which bead up and can be brushed off when spilled on the fabric, and require fewer cleanings than ordinary lab coats. Thanks to the Advanced Dual Action Teflon® fabric protector, the fabric releases deeper stains during a typical laundering cycle and does not require the expense of commercial cleaning services. Owners of the Medelita lab coat spend less time cleaning, reduce the use of environmental resources, and save money as they are not frequently replacing permanently stained coats.

“Just as athletes wear functional fabrics to enhance their performance during competition, the long days that our clients work are a true test of endurance,” says Manchik. “Moving freely and feeling comfortable all day in a lab coat, while maintaining a fresh, confident appearance, is very important to the conscientious modern female clinician.”

The Medelita lab coat relies on HIGH IQ® Easycare Plus high-tech fabric finish to maintain a clean and professional look, day after day. The high performance, low maintenance fabric emerges from the dryer without wrinkles and resists the destructive effects of cleaning cycles and everyday wear. In addition, the lab coat maintains its original shape, without sacrificing a soft and smooth-to-the-touch finish.

Made from high-denier, 100-percent brushed cotton, Medelita lab coats are designed specifically for women with a focus on fit and function. The tailored lab coat has a feminine shape with a rounded collar, hidden inside pocket, traditional side slits, and French finish inside seams. The fluid-resistant Medelita lab coat is available in sizes 0 to 20, with optional custom embroidery.

In addition to high quality lab coats, Medelita provides a line of performance women’s healthcare apparel, including clinician scrubs and nursing scrubs, which are available for purchase at www.medelita.com.

About Medelita
Medelita has one purpose: to reinvent the way women of all healthcare professions present themselves at work by offering the highest quality, best fitting, and most comfortable medical apparel available including womans scrubs and womans labcoats. Medelita caters to professional women who want their uniforms to embody the poise and confidence already displayed from within. Dr. Ketch’s Book Covers Important Topics For Parents Whose Children Need Surgery

A recent study of more than 11,000 children published in the journal Pediatrics found that door hinges and frames represent the greatest danger to small children in the form of hand and finger injuries.

The results of these injuries can lead to surgery, and one prominent anesthesiologist is paving the way in helping parents understand what that means for their kids.

Dr. Armen Ketchedjian, author of the book Will It Hurt? A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery, says that the injuries children sustain can often only be repaired through surgery, and that parents should prepare for that possibility.

Most of these injuries occur when doors close on a child’s fingers, a problem made worse in countries without legislation mandating safer door systems designed to help kids stay safe.

“When you hear that your child must have surgery it can be a terrifying experience” saysDr. Ketch, as he is known to his patients. “It’s not easy to accept that your child needs an operation, but once you know that he or she does, it’s imperative that you help prepare your child as best you can.”

Will It Hurt? is Dr. Ketch’s way of furthering parent education in the days and hours surrounding child surgeries that result not only from injuries such as those caused by door frames and hinges, but also from developmental problems, childhood diseases and birth defects.

“It has been shown that children have an easier time with surgery and recovery when they are less anxious, and a great way to help that happen is to have the parents be less anxious,” says Dr. Ketch.“That often means educating them so that their fears are alleviated at least a little bit.”

Dr. Ketch’s book covers important topics for parents whose children need surgery, including:

• What to do the day of the surgery
• What to do if their child needs to stay overnight
• How to choose a surgeon
• What questions to ask of the child’s doctors
• What to expect as the child recovers from surgery

Will It Hurt? helps educate parents about pediatric surgery. It is an easy-to-read resource that will give parents, their child and their families the help and reassurance they need to make any surgical experience as stress-free as possible.

Listed in The Guide to America’s Top Anesthesiologists by the Consumer Research Council of America, Dr. Ketch trained at Cornell Medical Center, with a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a pain management elective at Boston Children’s Hospital. He has worked to help develop new techniques in ambulatory anesthesia, taught medical students and residents, and cared for more than 10,000 patients.

Dr. Ketch is also the author of the children’s book Golden Apples (winner of the 2008 Reviewer’s Choice Award), a beautifully illustrated book that aims to help educate children about the dangers of drug abuse.

Medelita Raises Awareness For The Critical Work Physician Assistants Do

Enter the emergency room of MidMichigan Medical Center in the rural community of Gladwin, and chances are you’ll be treated not by a physician but by Physician Assistant Erin Sherer. From ordering and interpreting x-rays, to stitching up cuts, to writing prescriptions, Erin — like all licensed PAs — is exceptionally well qualified to complete an array of medical procedures traditionally performed by physicians. Rest assured, with Erin on your case, you’re in excellent hands.

Erin Sherer is an exemplary representative of the rapidly expanding number of Physician Assistants working in health care. Today, you’ll find PAs like Erin playing a central role in all areas of medicine — from the patient’s bedside to the operating table to the front of a university classroom. Licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision, PAs perform many of the same duties as their physician counterparts; they conduct physicals, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and decipher tests, counsel patients, write prescriptions, assist in surgery, even teach other aspiring PAs.

Above all, they’re making a tremendous positive impact on the quality of health care and patient outcomes. Just ask the physicians who collaborate with them in the daily delivery of care. Increasingly, doctors have come to rely on their PAs as valued partners. The PA-physician relationship is built on mutual trust and respect. Physicians entrust PAs to expertly assume many of the primary care responsibilities, freeing doctors to focus their energies and time where they’re needed most. PAs, in turn, are rigorously trained to know when to make medical decisions, and when to refer patients to specialized physicians.

This complementary relationship is at the core of the PA education model, which closely mirrors the medical training doctors receive — only in a highly accelerated format. Introduced in the mid 1960s, in response to a shortage of primary care physicians, the earliest PA programs were based on the fast-track training received by World War II doctors. In fact, the first PA students were Navy corpsmen who had received medical training while serving in the Vietnam War.

Today’s PA students — many of them women — may look a lot different than their corpsman predecessors, but they undergo equally rigorous, highly intensive training and preparation. On top of their heavy course load, PA students conduct clinical rotations (much like medical students), and pass a national certification examination — which they are required to retake very six years. PA Erin Sherer vividly recalls the challenge of PA school and preparing for the exam. “There were many things that I simply opted out of, because I had to focus my time and energy toward studying. Like sleep, for example!”

The result of this extreme level of dedication, commitment and sacrifice: Physician Assistants have become instrumental and integral members of their medical teams — valued by physicians and appreciated by patients. Their work is not going unnoticed. Celebrated every year between October 6 ¬– 12, National PA Week honors the vital role PAs play in elevating patient care. Joining in the chorus of praise, is medelita™ — makers of premium lab coats and scrubs professionally tailored for women working in health care. Women like Erin Sherer.

In honor of National PA Weekmedelita is pleased to feature PA Erin Sherer on its Women In Healthcare web page. Says medelita founder and fellow PA Lara Manchik,“PAs like Erin exemplify the extraordinary level of professionalism, competence and dedication of women working in health care. We are proud of the contributions PAs have made to patient care. They deserve to feel comfortable and confident as they perform their important work. Our mission is to help them feel great about what they do — and look great while they’re doing it.”

To all PAs — past, present and future — medelita salutes you. You have raised the bar in patient care. We’re pleased to help raise awareness for the critical work you do.
