Optical Express Now On Twitter

Optical Express has entered the world of social media, with the company recently launching its new Twitter accounts. Designed to better communicate with patients, customers and potential employees about the group’s current happenings and opportunities, four separate accounts have been created, each to fill a unique niche.

Optical Express Now On Twitter

Optical Express Marketing Manager Lindsay Taylor commented on the significance of this move.

“With the amount of people currently using tools like Twitter to communicate with one another, this was something that we couldn’t afford to miss out on,” she said.

According to Taylor, joining Twitter is not so much about being a part of a trend as it is about capitalising on a new communication tool that can benefit Optical Express patients, customers, and staff members.

“There is such a huge amount of information floating around on the internet related to both laser eye surgery and general eye care, and we want to be able provide a quality source of information, through our website, of course, but also through other mediums as well,” she said. “By reaching out, we hope that we can dispel any rumours, and help foster a constructive dialogue.”

The group’s corporate account can be found @OpticalExpress. This is the account that announces news updates, promotions, and competitions as they occur. As opposed to functioning as an extension of an advertisement for the organisation, it provides a stream of other news that may interest followers, including links to new articles uploaded to the “Eye Expert” informational segment of the Optical Express site, and announcements regarding the release of new designer lines of frames, for example.

@JoannaAtOEuk is designed as a point of contact for customer service enquiries, responding to Optical Express-related posts, and answering any questions. This includes everything from providing links to eye clinic locations, to connecting users with the relevant individual in the organisation to answer more clinical questions. Finally, @oeCareersUK announces job openings as they arise, enabling interested individuals to receive instant notifications when positions open up.

Optical Express provides strong presence at ASCRS Annual Meeting

Optical Express’ chief medical director Steve Schallhorn, in addition to several other Optical Express surgeons and International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) members, have attended and presented at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) annual meeting.

The Symposium on Cataract, IOL and Refractive Surgery segment of the meeting brought together ASCRS members from across the globe to learn about and discuss the newest trends and technologies in the field of refractive surgery.

Mr Schallhorn presented findings from a number of different studies, in particular one highlighting the results of a study on corneal thickness. The presentation, titled ‘Should we perform LASIK on thin corneas?’ discussed how performing LASIK on patients with thin corneas is safe and effective. Mr Schallhorn’s research involved 81,715 eyes, a virtually unprecedented amount in the field. He also presented a poster titled ‘Patient Satisfaction After LASIK: Analysis of More Than 15,000 Patients’, which discussed the high level of patient satisfaction achieved after modern LASIK.

Optical Express’ UK medical director Professor Jan Venter was also a presenter at the conference. Prof Venter discussed exciting research comparing different techniques to perform enhancements. Optical Express Optometrist Completes 7th Vision Aid Overseas Project

Optical Express Optometrist Ed Baldwin has successfully completed his seventh Vision Aid Overseas project, a trip to Burkina Faso to distribute eyeglasses and screen patients for cataract surgery.

Baldwin went on his first project with Vision Aid in 2001, working with a team to provide eye tests and eyeglasses in Latvian prisons. Since then, his projects have included such locales as Ethiopia, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Ghana. He has also served as a team leader on more than one occasion. Baldwin’s most recent trip was unique, however, because of the cataract screening element.

“My most recent trip to Burkina Faso was a little different, since we were not only giving out glasses but also trying to find patients who needed cataract surgery,” he said. “We found about a hundred patients that needed intraocular lens treatment, and another team went out a few weeks after us with surgeons. It was great, because normally when you see patients with cataracts you can’t really do anything about it.”

Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) sends teams of volunteer Optometrists and dispensingopticians to developing nations to screen and outfit patients with appropriate spectacles. Nearing its 25th anniversary, VAO has provided 300,000 individuals with spectacles, and conducted 600,000 eye tests.

Baldwin commented, “Volunteering is the most rewarding thing you can do,” Baldwin said. “It’s giving people sight where they would otherwise be blind. In a lot of places there are no provisions for eye care, so if you haven’t got a pair of glasses you can’t work and feed your family.

“When you test eyes back home in the UK, the general public have a huge choice of opticians. In parts of Africa, people will walk from miles around to see you. You’re really making a difference to people’s lives in a short space of time with something as simple as a pair of spectacles.”

Baldwin has worked for Optical Express since 2001, and is currently based in Cardiff, providing both laser eye surgery and intraocular lens treatment consultations to prospective patients.

Optical Express Reports Successful Launch Of Ambassador Programme

The programme, available to all past laser and intraocular lens treatment patients of Optical Express, enables referrers to choose how they would like their referral reward – valued at hundreds of pounds – to be distributed. They can claim the reward themselves, give their friend or relative the full discount, or split the reward.

Optical Express Reports Successful Launch Of Ambassador Programme

After a trial run at the end of 2009, the Ambassador Referral Programme was officially launched in early 2010. Since then, over a thousand valued patients have taken advantage of the unique opportunity offered by the opticians.

“We’re extremely excited about how the programme has gone so far,” said David Carson, head of the Ambassador programme. “Everyone has really embraced the opportunity, and we’re seeing promising numbers and getting great feedback.”

All three options surrounding the allocation of the reward have been very popular, according to Carson.

“The fact that we’re seeing such a distribution of choices in terms of the reward really reaffirms to us that our patients appreciate the choice we’ve provided them with,” he said. “If one [option] had been overwhelmingly popular, we might have considered reworking the programme, but as it stands, the numbers indicate that our referrers like having all three options.”

Despite the relatively limited time frame in which the Ambassador Referral Programme has been running, patients have been extremely enthusiastic, Carson said.

“We’ve seen numerous patients referring three, four, even six of their friends and colleagues in the short time since we launched the programme,” he said. “Every day we’re getting calls from patients who have just been treated, anxious to receive their pack in the mail and start referring. The momentum that is building right now surrounding Ambassador is just phenomenal.”

Optical Express offers free laser eye surgery consultations at over 100 locations across the UK and Europe.

Optical Express Cameron Toll Unveils Following Major Refit

Optical Express in Edinburgh’s Cameron Toll has been unveiled following a major refit, and is now poised to serve customers even better.

Optical Express Cameron Toll Unveils Following Major Refit

“The shop looks amazing,” said Clare Elliot, the location’s General Manager. “It’s been transformed, and looks very sophisticated. It’s created a great buzz.”

The location has been updated to be more consistent with other Optical Express locations, with a white, modern look, and tiled flooring to replace the older, tartan carpets. The result is a brighter, and more professional looking clinic, with less visual elements detracting from the wide range of frames on display. A number of new glasses and sunglasses are now available, including frames from Dior and Givenchy.

According to Elliot, the entire team is enthused about the location’s big makeover.

“The whole team is very excited about the refit,” Elliot said. “We’ve always known that we have great products, and can offer a great shopping experience, and now the store looks brilliant as well.”

The clinic is located by the south entrance of the Cameron Toll Shopping Centre, a mile and a half outside of the Edinburgh city centre. Throughout the entire refitting process, the clinic remained open.

“We really wanted to minimise any inconvenience to our customers,” Elliot said. “We underwent the refit so we can provide a better experience for our customers, but at the same time, we didn’t want to close down the store in the process and put anyone out. We structured our refit as to have as little impact on our day-to-day operations as possible.”

The location carries over a thousand designer frames and sunglasses, including Ray-Ban, Marc Jacobs and Gucci. The location also offers an array of contact lenses. A convenient 1-hour service is available for making glasses, so customers can have their glasses ready by the time they are finished their shopping.

Optical Express is also Europe’s number one provider of laser eye surgery, with over 100 clinics across the UK and Europe, including Edinburgh, providing pre and post-operative care.

Team EyeCare 20/20 Members Predicted to Win Multiple Medals in Vancouver

Team LASIK-FOR-THE-GOLD, is a collection of champion Olympic athletes from across the country who have all had LASIK vision correction surgery by Cary M. Silverman, M.D., Medical Director of EyeCare 20/20.

With exactly one month to go to the start of the Winter Olympic Games, American athletes are scattered around the globe, some are desperately looking to secure their spot on the team, others making the final preparations of a never ending quest to deliver their life’s best performance next month in Vancouver, when it matters most. With the clock ticking, the LASIK-For-The-Gold Winter Olympians appear poised to bring home their share of Olympic hardware. Here is an update on each of the world class athletes who are patients of Cary M. Silverman, M.D. and the team of eye care professionals at EyeCare 20/20:

Katherine Reutter (short track speedskating) – Reutter is now a 17-time world cup medalist who is locked-n-loaded for her Olympic debut. She will compete in four different events and is considered to be one of Team USA’s most likely Olympic medalists.

Chad Hedrick (speedskating) – Already a gold, silver and bronze medalist from the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Hedrick has recently returned to his championship form and earned medals in both of his last two world cup events, including a gold medal in Calgary, Canada in December. Hedrick will square off against fellow American Shani Davis in the 1500 meters at this year’s Games in what promises to be one of the must-see showdown events of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Curt Tomasevicz (bobsled) – A pusher behind U.S. driver Steve Holcomb in Team U.S.A.’s number one sled the ‘Night Train’, Tomasevicz and his teammates are on the podium more often than they are off of it. They are considered the team to beat when the Olympic medals are on the line next month.

Eric Pac (bobsled) – Long since considered ‘likely to make the Olympic Team’, Pac has recently shown that simply getting to the Olympics isn’t good enough. A world cup bronze medal in Salt Lake City in November turned heads on the international bobsled circuit and marked Pac as someone to keep an eye on in Vancouver. She currently holds a 5th place ranking in the overall World Cup standings.

Molly Engstrom (hockey) – A bronze medalist at the 2006 Olympics, a World Champion, and a long time member of the U.S. National Team, Engstrom and her teammates are highly likely to do battle with the host Canadian team with gold medals on the line. In this heated international rivalry, silver doesn’t count.

Dan Joye (luge) – Joye, who is part of the doubles luge team of Niccum & Joye, will enter the Games, his second Olympics, as part of the number one ranked U.S. sled. A recent world cup fourth place finish marked the team’s best ever placing – one step up in Vancouver will put Joye on the podium. For more information about any of the Team EyeCare 20/20 athletes, visit: www.LASIKForTheGold.com

Optical Express Launches Ambassador Referral Programme

Optical Express launches new Ambassador Referral Programme. Open to both laser eye surgery and intraocular lens treatment patients, the flexible programme enables the referrer to choose how the reward – valued at hundreds of pounds per referral – is distributed.

Optical Express Launches Ambassador Referral Programme

David Carson, the head of the programme, spoke with enthusiasm about the new Ambassador Referral initiative.

“The programme is a huge departure from any scheme we’ve done before, with larger rewards and more flexibility,” he said. “We really believe that our patients are our best ambassadors, and we designed this so that we can provide them with a reward that is really substantial, and that can really make a difference in their lives. The amount that they can earn is endless.”

With the new programme, the person referring is given three options – they can receive the full reward, their friend or relative can receive the full amount off the cost of laser eye treatment or intraocular lens implant treatment, or the reward can be split evenly between the patient and referrer.

If the referrer has opted to receive all or part of the reward, they are issued a cheque within 14 days of their friend or relative undergoing surgery. Thus, the referrer has the potential to not only earn an unlimited amount of money, but also to receive their rewards almost immediately.

Optical Express Launches Online Eye Expert

Optical Express has launched a new ‘Eye Expert’ section on its website. A collection of articles addressing a range of topics related to eyes, to provide a resource that is both informative and interesting.

With the addition of the Eye Expert section, Optical Express is positioning itself as more than just a provider of frames, lenses, and laser eye surgery – Optical Express is also a valuable source of information. The new articles cover a wide variety of topics dealing with eye anatomy and health, through to eye care, and addressing such questions as ‘Are carrots really good for your eyes?’ From the technical and the practical, to the entertaining, the content is designed to appeal to a wide array of readers.

“We’re the only provider of the complete eye care solution – from laser eye surgery to glasses, to contact lenses, to intraocular lens treatment,” Joanna Patterson, marketing assistant for Optical Express, said. “By offering an informative resource, we’re really trying to go above and beyond our current offerings and provide even more for our customers and patients. The Eye Expert section addresses a current lack of comprehensive resources of this kind related to eyes.”

There are resources dedicated to eye diseases, and others that are more beauty-oriented, but no one has really looked at tackling eyes in a broad way like Optical Express has.

Patterson added, “We are really excited about launching this part of our website, and hope that people embrace it. We’ve put a lot of time into compiling all of this information.”

New articles will be added frequently, as well as responses to questions and queries posed by readers.

“We’ve launched the site with information that we think will prove useful, but we’re hoping that comments and responses will really dictate the direction that we move with this,” Patterson said. “The Eye Expert section should ideally be a reflection of the information that our patients and customers are seeking. We are looking forward to getting feedback.”

The newest campaign is aimed at selling a selected portion of their most popular, fashionable eyeglass frames at a discount to their customers.

After the successful email campaign was launched, GlassesUSA launched the promotion on their website – inviting customers to take 10% off any of the selected eyeglasses.

The final steps in the promotional campaign launch was reaching out to bloggers and affiliates in order to get the word out about the 10% discount. The campaign was well-received among bloggers and those running coupon and discount sites.

GlassesUSA, a company that endured many changes recently including moving their shipping outfit to St. Joseph, Michigan, is an international cooperative group with offices in New Jersey as well as Tel Aviv, Israel. The company believes that vision care should be within arms reach and that high-quality eyeglasses should not cost a fortune. In conjunction with their business philosophy, GlassesUSA established efforts for their customers to not only recycle broken glasses but to donate old and used eyeglasses in order to ensure that those around the globe who cannot afford eyeglasses will receive them free of cost.

Since launching as a company, GlassesUSA transformed into an organization committed to philanthropy as well as consumer education. Their customers have a blog available to find the best ways to keep themselves informed on anything new in the vision world. Barack Obama Signs Proclamation Save Your Vision Week 2009 – BiCOM with Glaucoma Eye Test Diaton is Preparing to Help

Barack Obama, President of the United States of America proclaims March 1 through March 7, 2009, as Save Your Vision Week. BiCOM Inc home of Glaucoma Eye Test Diaton – non-contact Glaucoma Eye Test through the Eyelid is prepared to assist with vision screenings. Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM comments on Presidents support of glaucoma screenings. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are critical to minimize vision loss from eye diseases.

Proclamation by the president of the United Stated of America addresses the important issue of Blindness and visual impairment that affects millions of Americans. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are critical to minimize vision loss from eye diseases. During Save Your Vision Week – Barack Obama encourages all Americans to take action to prevent their vision loss.

BiCOM Inc. home of Glaucoma Eye Test Diaton Tonometer (IOP through the Eyelid), has been a long supporter of preventive glaucoma screenings. At a recent free glaucoma screening event where BiCOM in conjunction with SAVE Program (Sight for a Vision Exchange) and The Congressional Glaucoma Caucus Foundation conducted at New York City Children’s Services in honor of African American Heritage Celebration has revealed many with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) a major risk factor for glaucoma. Patients were referred to an ophthalmologist Dr. Lynnette P. Williams-Young a glaucoma specialist for further evaluation.

Unfortunately, most people have limited knowledge of blinding eye disorders. Based on National Eye Institute 2005 study, only eight percent of respondents knew that glaucoma, a condition that can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss and blindness, strikes without early warning. Similarly, glaucoma also begins as a silent vision threat; as per Prevent Blindness America, it is estimated that of those Americans that have glaucoma, only half know they have it. It is estimated that 60 million Americans are at risk for developing glaucoma.

Everyone should be screened, especially with availability of new non-invasive (over the eyelid) glaucoma screening technology aka “Glaucoma Eye Test” Diaton tonometer available to optometrists, ophthalmologists and general physicians, enabling doctors to quickly and painlessly screen individuals at risk.

Several demographic groups are at higher risk for visual impairment, including teenagers, diabetics, Hispanics, African Americans, and the economically disadvantaged. Older Americans are more susceptible to eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Children need regular vision screenings because vision disorders left untreated during childhood can lead to permanent visual impairment during adulthood.

President Obama stated, “Eye disease knows no bounds, and every American should take steps to protect his or her eyesight.”

To remind Americans about the importance of safeguarding their eyesight, the Congress, by joint resolution approved December 30, 1963, as amended (77 Stat. 629; 36 U.S.C. 138), has authorized and requested the President to proclaim the first week in March of each year as “Save Your Vision Week.”

“I’m pleased to see that President Barack Obama, with only weeks in the office is addressing an important issue of blindness, its early detection and timely treatment. My whole team at BiCOM Inc., and our partners are ready to continue our efforts and act on a larger scale by reaching out to many more people through awareness, training, glaucoma screening events and making “Glaucoma Eye Test” Diaton tonometer available to all that are willing to participate,“ said Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc.

From the website of the White House:http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Save-Your-Vision-Week-2009/

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim March 1 through March 7, 2009, as Save Your Vision Week. During this time, I invite eye care professionals, teachers, members of the media, and all organizations dedicated to preserving eyesight to join in activities that will raise awareness of vision diseases and disorders.”

GlassesUSA Helps Customers During the Economic Crisis

As the economy slips from bad to worse, many Americans put major purchases on the back-burner and hold off on massive investments until a sale arises. As the economy slips from bad to worse, many Americans put major purchases on the back-burner and hold off on massive investments until a sale arises.

Unfortunately, health care has become one of the major investments that Americans do not want to sink their money into. GlassesUSA is aiding people all across the United States during the latest economic crisis by making eyeglasses affordable as vision care has generally be regarded as a luxury – even in times of economic prosperity.

GlassesUSA is hoping to change the world of vision care and eyeglasses by providing customers with “quality eyeglasses at affordable prices” and with the best possible customer service. The cooperative group has turned into an organization committed to philanthropy and education.

It is always reaching out to its customers with new and innovative ways to save money.

Across America, most optical stores mark up their eyeglasses from 300% to 3000%. A pair of eyeglasses that would cost about $15 (US) to make can cost upwards toward $350-$400 (US).

Many chain stores that sell eyeglasses will contest this amount but insiders in the optical industry agree that a 400% mark up is indeed the correct number. Normal markup is 50-75% to cover the costs of the frame, some overhead, and a set percentage for profit. However, designer frames – which are generally the most sought-after – cause a massive jump in cost creating a domino effect that makes no name brands more expensive.

The cost of prescription eyeglasses does not always include the cost of the eye examination. What most Americans do not know is that when you get an eye exam, your eye doctor must – by law – give you a copy of your prescription when you leave the office. GlassesUSA can then fill the prescription online and send you your classes within a weeks time.

Committed to providing customers with discount eyeglasses, GlassesUSA offers discounts to various universities, colleges, military personnel, union members, organization members, and customers who search the internet for deals. They also work in conjunction with the Unionville Lions Club in a partnership that helps preserve sight for those living in impoverished regions of the world. Customers can simply send an old pair of eyeglasses to the Unionville Lions Club – specifying they would like purchase new eyeglasses with GlassesUSA as part of this deal – along with their email address. Once the glasses are received, the customer will receive a discount code good towards their next pair of prescription eyeglasses.

As Americans look for cheaper accessories for their wardrobe, eyeglasses have become aninstant hit for those who do not want prescription frames. Those not wanting to spend $200 (US) on clear-lensed eyeglasses for fashion purposes are turning to the internet andGlassesUSA for help and saving hundreds in the process.

Sunglasses are a popular purchase online as well. Prescription sunglasses can cost around the same as prescription eyeglasses but to add polarized lenses can cost more. GlassesUSA assures its customers that they are getting the best possible deal on sunglasses as they would get on eyeglasses. All sunglasses come with polarized lenses. It is recommended that customers add on the anti-reflective coating to the lenses.

All prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses go through a vigorous “5-stripe” quality assurance process to ensure customers that their glasses have beentested to exceed FDA standards.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. 60 million Americans are at RISK for developing Glaucoma

  • It is estimated that over 4 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it.
  • Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African-Americans than Caucasians.
  • Everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens. Yes, older people are at a higher risk for glaucoma but babies can be born with glaucoma (approximately 1 out of every 10,000 babies born in the United States).

National Glaucoma Awareness Month presents an opportunity to educate and screen those most at risk for developing the “sneak thief of sight”. Dr.Williams-Young is the coordinator for the S.A.V.E program.

The “Sight for A Vision Exchange” is a program inspired by Sis. Mae McGill and Bishop James Gaylord and developed by Dr. Chynn and Dr. Williams-Young to raise $50,000 to benefit the Capital Stewardship Campaign of Kelly Temple Church.

Through the partnership between Park Avenue Laser Vision Center and Kelly Temple, we will be able to provide quality affordable laser vision correction for church members. Also, we will be able to provide education about laser vision correction and educate about maintaining a lifetime of good ocular health. Ultimately, this will reduce the fear of laser vision correction in the African American community.

Glaucoma screenings will be performed with BiCOM’s non-invasive, through the eyelid Tonometer Diaton (www.GlaucomaEyeTest.com) – the newest, safest way to screen for high intraocular pressure (IOP), which can be an indication of Glaucoma.

Join us for a free eye pressure screenings at Park Avenue Laser Vision 102 East 25th Street (& Park Avenue South). Call Park Avenue Laser Vision with any questions and directions at 212-741-8628.

GlassesUSA announced a partnership with the Lions Club this week

GlassesUSA announced a partnership with the Lions Club this week. The partnership will consist of taking used eyeglasses and returned prescription eyeglasses and donating them to the Uniontown Lions Club.

The partnership is a new development for GlassesUSA as it hopes to change the way people view eyecare and eyeglasses. Vision care has long been a luxury in the United States as opposed to a necessity. Lions Clubs all over the United States have taken to the streets to find old and used eyeglasses in order to produce a wearable eyeglass frame with new lenses. The new eyeglasses are then given to those who need them most – people who cannot afford eyeglasses.

GlassesUSA is proud to be a part of such a union. Eyeglasses returned by customers will be sent to the Uniontown Lions Club for collection. The glasses will then be recycled and sent to a re-manufacturing plant. From there, new lenses are manufactured suited to fit the needs of the future wearer. The eyeglasses are then sent to the people who need them the most.

As part of the partnership, GlassesUSA will give customers who donate their used eyeglasses a 10% discount on future frames with the presentation of a receipt from the Lions Club. Those interested in sending in their frames should send them to:
Uniontown Lions Club
C/O Bob Kendall
81 Pontius RD.
Mogadore, OH 44260

Once customers have sent their glasses in along with their email address, a receipt will be given to them via email. In order to receive the discount, the customer must email the receipt to support@glassesusa.com to receive the coupon code.
