Unintended effect of bath salt use

The dangers of bath salt addiction have been well-publicized over the past year; however, a new risk associated with its usage has recently come to light.

A young woman appeared at the ER presenting with symptoms of pain, rapid skin-cell deterioration on her arm as well as profuse drainage from the area. After further investigation, it was found that the young woman had contracted a flesh-eating bacteria due to bath salt injection. The flesh-eating bacteria was fast-moving and, because of the rapid growth and spread of the bacteria, she lost her arm, shoulder and collarbone.

“Many times individuals forget about the unintended consequences of substance abuse,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “When someone is injecting a drug, one of the last things on their mind is ‘I might lose my arm because of this’. In addition, once the addicted individual has gone through the critical period where they may experience an immediate consequence from their drug use, such as convulsions, seizures and coma, they certainly do not think about associated risks such as this. Injecting anything into the body without the supervision of a physician is dangerous. Individuals need to understand the full-scope of risks associated with drug use, not just the possible short-term consequences.”

Bath salt abuse is growing in popularity, particularly with the youth of America. Fortunately, lawmakers are beginning to understand the true danger of their improper usage and, as a result, many states are passing laws banning the sale and distribution of bath salts.

As a parent, teen drug use is a frightening reality to face. If you suspect that your teen is abusing bath salts or any other type of substance, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can assist you in reaching your son or daughter with professional intervention services.

Mountainside Drug Rehab’s Tips For Staying Sober Through The Holidays

Any previously addicted individual who has successfully maintained their sobriety for any length of time will attest to the fact the holiday season is one of the most challenging times of the year to stay on the recovery path. In addition, their successes also show that staying sober is indeed possible by following the guidelines below.

1.  Utilize your sponsor. You aren’t alone in your quest to stay sober during the holiday season. Your sponsor has experience in this area – lean on him or her and ask how to handle what you feel will be the most challenging aspects for you during the holiday season. Drug Rehab is an on-going process.

2.  Regularly check-in. Whether you decide to check-in with your sponsor at regular intervals, or with someone else in recovery, just make sure that you do so! Don’t wait until you are in a precarious situation to check-in. Staying in regular contact with a sober individual can help you as you navigate difficult situations.

3.  Attend an Alka-thon. An Alka-thon is an all day, 24 hour, 12-step based meeting event which is typically scheduled during the holidays. Those in recovery can come and get support from others who have been where they are.

4. Bring a sober person with you to a party. If you have been invited to a holiday gathering where alcohol will be served: first: determine if this is a good idea for you to go; second: if you do go, bring with you another sober person who is working their recovery program.

5.  Bring your own drinks. Make certain that you have a viable alternative to alcohol at a party. Bring your own sparkling water, sparkling cider or other favorite non-alcoholic beverage to insure that you have something to drink while others are imbibing.

While the holidays can be a difficult time to maintain sobriety, it is indeed possible with a little pre-planning and forethought. Don’t be afraid to lean upon family and friends during this holiday season!

Day Before Thanksgiving – Particulary Vulnerable Time For Students

While ‘Black Friday’ is a commonly known term full of hope and excitement for the holiday season, ‘Black Wednesday’ is lesser known, yet one of the most dangerous times for college students.

‘Black Wednesday’ has become one of the largest party days of the year for students ushering in the holiday season with friends; much binge drinking can take place before the students head home to a weekend of Thanksgiving festivities. The term “black” was coined due to individuals blacking out from too much alcohol consumption.

“The holidays should be a time for celebrating, but not to excess and certainly not for those who are underage,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “In general, I don’t think parents are aware that students are making this type of concerted effort to drink with their friends. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that parents know that their child could be at risk for participating in binge drinking so that they are able to intervene before it’s too late.”

National statistics show that more DUI’s occur during the holiday time than at any other time during the year. In addition, The National Center for Victims of Crime reports that, during the holiday season, 40 percent of all traffic fatalities happen when one driver has a blood alcohol count of .08 or more.

Broaching the subject of underage drinking with a minor in your life can be a tough interaction. Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center offers professional intervention services to assist you in helping your teen or young adult begin the road to recovery.

33 Year Danish Study Offers Possible Insight Into Alcoholism

A study conducted jointly by the University of Kansas and the Institute of Preventative Medicine in Copenhagen concludes that it may be possible to definitively identify factors that lead to alcoholism later in life.

Dagens Medicin, a Danish medical journal states that boys who have an alcoholic father, who experienced difficulties during birth and who have been diagnosed with ADHD as a child have a high probability of developing alcohol dependence and addiction as an adult.

“Many of the factors cited have been individually studied and have been shown to contribute to alcoholism later in life,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “It’s not surprising that combining those risk factors would result in an even greater chance of alcohol dependence. Knowing these factors for alcoholism can help those who are at risk to become more aware that their actions and reactions in certain situations may help them avoid the trap of using alcohol as a means to cope with life.”

Research into various causes of alcoholism are ongoing within the field of addiction and, one day, may offer universal prevention to those suffering with alcohol dependence. Until then, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can assist you or a loved one onto the journey to recovery and living a life of sobriety.

Reduction In Addiction Stigma Sought

The stigma attached to addiction is often a roadblock on the road to recovery for many addicted individuals. National Recovery Month, however, has worked to reduce this stigma through public awareness and education.

While there can be many factors that influence an individuals’ decision on whether or not to seek treatment for their addiction, one of the most prevalent deterring factors seems to be the stigma associated with being an addict and/or alcoholic.

“When most people think of addicts, the image of dirty crack houses may be the first image that comes to one’s mind,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “While the image can be an accurate one, for the most part, addicted individuals don’t fit that stereotype. Instead, they are ordinary people, just like us, with whom we come in contact on a regular basis. They are people who work at stores, office buildings and who have families. Unfortunately, the stereotype of the crack house addict has a tendency to further alienate an addicted individual from going into drug rehab thus perpetuating the cycle of drug and alcohol abuse. In order to reduce the social stigma of addiction, we have to be willing to confront the issue, educate the public on addiction as well as give individuals the additional tools necessary to combat the stigma of addiction. Until we can open up these avenues, the cycle of abuse will continue to rise.”

While addiction and substance abuse is a growing problem facing America, recovery is, indeed possible. If you or a loved one suspects that substance abuse or alcoholism is taking hold in your or their life, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can assist you in beginning the journey to recovery and living a life of sobriety.

On Monday, Mitch Winehouse, alongside other family members, appeared on CNN’s Anderson Cooper show and discussed his daughter’s life, death and struggle with drugs and alcohol.

In his first interview, Mitch stated that Amy had been clean for the past three years and that “her problem was alcohol”. In addition, he states that she had been taking the prescription drug Librium, daily, in an effort to decrease her chances of seizure as she detoxed from excessive alcohol use. His opinion is that Ms. Winehouse had a seizure and died from the complications of that seizure.

“The death of Ms. Winehouse brings to light the worldwide problem of alcoholism,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “The tragedy is, most certainly, a brilliant, talented life cut-short. Preventing Underage College Drinking Begins At Home

The season for change has come for many parents as they nervously transport their children to an unfamiliar place, with hopes of a successful academic future for their child. Unfortunately, over twenty-five percent of these parents will be disappointed.

Underage, and even legal drinking, in college-age students has been shown to impact students’ academic careers drastically. One quarter of all college students will either have increased absenteeism, poor testing scores or lower overall grades as a result of drinking.

“While these statistics may seem somewhat bleak to parents, there are steps that families can take to prevent these outcomes,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Initially, parents can be proactive by helping to guide their children to a college or university whose policies most closely align with the values that have been established within their family. For some families, that may mean complete abstinence from alcohol, on or off campus, for any age group. For other families, that may mean locating an institution that has a reputation for strict adherence, as well as severe consequences, if underage drinking takes place. In addition, parents should educate their college-bound children to the high-risks associated with drinking for this particular age group, such as increased deaths, injury, sexual abuse, unplanned pregnancies and increased health problems. By planning and having appropriate conversations with their college-aged young adult children, parents truly can have a dramatic impact on whether or not their child becomes part of the sad statistics.”

Statistics show that nearly 2,000 students, ranging in age from 18 to 24, die annually from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, with the most coming as a result of car accidents. In addition, over one-half million students of the same age group are accidentally injured while under the influence of alcohol.

If you suspect that your underage child has already developed a problem with alcohol prior to entering college, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can help with professional intervention services that are specialized to their unique situation.

Family Believes Alcohol Contributing Factor In Amy Winehouse Death

The autopsy results are back in the death of Amy Winehouse and, as the family suspected, illegal drugs were not a factor in her death.

Ms. Winehouse’s family has stated that she had given up drugs at least three years prior to her death, but has struggled with alcohol abuse. They believe that quitting alcohol cold turkey could have caused a shock to her system, triggering fatal seizures.

“Many times, people think that they can simply stop drinking and they’ll be fine,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “While their intentions are certainly pure and honest, those intentions have often proved fatal. When a person who struggles with alcohol abuse suddenly stops consuming alcohol, their body can, indeed, go into shock and seizures can occur. That’s why it’s important to seek help when one is trying to stop habitual drinking. Effective alcohol rehab will consist of gradually and safely weaning an individual off of alcohol, helping to manage the symptoms of withdrawals and then get them to a point where they can deal with the deeper issues surrounding their alcoholism. Safety is key when helping a person conquer their alcoholism.”

Driving While ‘Buzzed’ Is Still Significant Risk For Life-Threatening Accidents

A recently published report indicates that driving while even slightly buzzed causes increased traffic accidents.

The journal, Addiction , published a study from the University of California San Diego which shows that individuals who are buzzed while driving are more likely to speed as well as not use their seatbelts properly. In addition, researchers found that accidents involving alcohol, even at a scant, detectable level, are 36.6 percent more severe than accidents that don’t have alcohol as a contributing factor.

“Many people think, ‘I’ve only had one drink; I’ll be fine to drive’, but this research clearly shows that this is not the case,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Understanding the effects of alcohol on the brain, we’ve always been advocates for not driving after consuming what is perceived as a small amount of alcohol. Functionality of the brain is impaired, even with supposed insignificant amounts of alcohol. It’s important to always designate a non-drinking driver when consuming even just one drink. “

This particular study bolsters the position of many who advocate lowering the legal limit of intoxication in an effort to save more lives.

Bath Salts Pose Legitimate Danger For Teens, Young Adults

It may be difficult to believe that something with such an innocuous name can be so dangerous, even deadly.

A new designer drug marketed as “bath salts” has nothing to do with a relaxing time bathing. In fact, many are using the product with no thought of relaxing at all.

“Bath salts are being legally sold and are being used by more and more young people to get high,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “They can be found at many convenience stores or smoke shops, and they contain stimulants such as mephedrone and MDPV. Individuals generally snort them to get high, but they can also be smoked or injected. Some states have banned the sale of bath salts and Mountainside is hoping to help push a nationwide ban on the substance. If we don’t address this problem immediately, there will be a whole new drug epidemic plaguing America and, with that, comes tragic deaths.”

Bath salts are among the growing group of the so-called designer drugs that produce a high similar to that of a methamphetamine or cocaine, but with the addition of hallucinogenic side effects. Sold under a variety of different names, the use of bath salts has been linked to suicide, hallucinogenic rages, and even speculation of murder.

If you know or suspect that your teen or young adult is abusing bath salts or any other type of substance, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center offers professional intervention services to assist you in getting them the help that they need to recover. Children With Alcoholic Parents Have Increased Alcoholism Risk

A recently published study out of Europe shows that children who have one or more parents who either abuse alcohol or who are alcoholics, have increased risk of alcoholism.

In addition, the study seems to indicate that this predisposition occurred more highly in female participants than in their male counterparts.

“Parental factors, regardless of what they are, always have a strong influence on children,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “It’s no wonder that alcoholism and alcohol abuse demonstrates the same. Early intervention in affected families is necessary to help determine other risk factors and to react in time to assist families in not perpetuating the cycle of abuse. Some times, children feel as if they will, inevitably, become what their parents are from a negative perspective. With alcohol and drug abuse education and early intervention, we are able to show these affected children that their future can and will be different. With a concerted social effort, we can help affected families heal and become alcohol-free.”

While there are many factors which influence alcoholism risk in families, repeated studies do show that genetics do play a large factor in the cycle of drug and alcohol abuse.

If your loved one is in denial about their alcohol use, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center offers professional intervention services to assist you in getting them the help that they need to recover. Majority Of Alcohol Abusers Believe They Don’t Need Treatment

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently released a study that shows the majority of alcohol abusers don’t believe that they need treatment.

Data from the 2006-2009 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health show that there are more than 7.4 million American adults, ranging in age between 21 to 64, who have untreated alcohol abuse disorders. Among those, 98.8 percent don’t believe that they need treatment. That leaves just over 500,000 individuals who recognize the seriousness of their disorder.

“One of the first indications of alcohol abuse is denial,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Clearly, this data supports that assertion. Alcohol abuse may initially begin as recreational, and then the frequency increases. While the increased use may seem gradual, the effects are profound. The abuse begins affecting personal relationships, their work, and they may begin having trouble with the law as they spiral out of control. For those on the outside, it seems glaringly obvious that there is a problem. For the user, they are just in denial. That’s why it is so important to have family members and friends who are willing to lovingly confront the individual so that the affected individual can receive help.”

Those with alcohol abuse disorders have drinking related behaviors that put them and others in high risk of immediate physical danger as well as long-term danger from the consequences of alcoholism, including death.

If your loved one is in denial about their alcohol use, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center offers professional intervention services to assist you in getting them the help that they need to recover. New Study Shows ER Visits Soar Due To Ecstasy

A study recently released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) showed that emergency room visits due to the abuse of Ecstasy soared 75 percent between 2004 and 2008.

Ecstasy, a well-known party drug of the 90’s, is once again growing in popularity. Over sixty-six percent of the emergency room visits were made by young adults aged 18 to 29 years old.

“The growing abuse of this party drug is alarming,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Data from studies such as this one helps us know where to re-focus our efforts. At times we tend to become complacent, thinking that we have rounded a corner on curbing the use of a particular drug. We must remember that even though a drug’s popularity comes and goes, we must still be ever vigilant in educating teens and young adults on its dangers.”

Ecstasy is known to produce psychedelic as well as stimulant side effects, such as high blood pressure and elevated body temperatures. It’s a drug that is often used at parties (raves) and is a popular drug of choice for spring break. Although ecstasy trails six other drugs in ER admissions, it is crucial that the dangers of this drug be conveyed to teens and young adults.

Effective Alcohol Rehab Limits Widespread Impact Of Alcohol Abuse

The problem of alcohol abuse is widespread and is becoming a growing epidemic, particularly among the youth of America . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 52% of individuals 18 years of age and older are current regular drinkers of alcohol.

“Excessive alcohol consumption is troubling on many fronts,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Not only does it tear families apart emotionally and mentally, but the socio-economic impact of is abuse affects everyone. We’ve got a legal substance that, when abused, will simply and completely destroy lives. If we want to wage and win this war, alcohol use and abuse education is crucial, starting at a very early age.”

President Obama Calls For Help In Fight On Drugs

President Obama fielded questions regarding the fight on drugs in a recent town meeting in California.

While the purpose of the meeting had a focus other than the national war on drugs, the tone quickly turned and the focus shifted on how to enable states to be able to provide more addiction treatment services to those in need.

“President Obama highlighted a major problem within the addiction field: lack of adequate space in programs to service clients,” began a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “The number of individuals who need drug rehab often times far outweighs the number of clients that one rehab center can service at any given time. Many times, drug addiction treatment programs will have waiting lists for space availability. Can you imagine how discouraging it would be to be an individual who is addicted to drugs or alcohol, decide that today is the day you are ready to change your life and be turned away and told to return at a later date? President Obama has suggested that the allocation of resources be re-examined to see if there are any changes that can be made to insure that each person who wants to go into drug rehab, can.”

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that there are 23.6 million individuals, aged 12 or older, who needed treatment for drug or alcohol abuse. The survey further shows that only 11% received treatment in a drug addiction treatment facility.

A Call For Tighter Non-Prescription Drug Regulation To Fight Meth Labs

In recent years, the FDA has begun implementing tighter regulations for medications that previously could be obtained easily, off the shelf at any drug store. Yet, many states are pushing for even tighter regulations of non-prescription medications, such as those used to treat colds and flu.

“Cold and flu medications are useful for their intended application, however they can be altered and used for illegal purposes,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “That’s the main reason that the FDA began monitoring the purchase of those substances. Individuals were buying these types of medication in large quantities and modifying them to manufacture illegal meth. Obviously, the tighter regulations have severely limited individuals’ ability to obtain these substances, however there will always be a way to circumnavigate almost any regulation. That’s why many states are considering legislature to require a physician’s prescription for these types of medications. Only time will tell if such measures will be passed and effective in combating the war on drugs and, particularly, meth labs.”

Abuse of any drug significantly alters how an individuals’ brain functions. Brain imaging studies have shown that chronic meth abuse results in reduced motor skills as well impaired verbal learning. In addition, many meth users experience significant emotional problems as a result of their abuse.

The NIDA cites the following statistics on methamphetamines:

•  It’s estimated that of all Americans 12 years and older, 10.4 million have tried meth at least once in their life

•  Over 15,000 deaths occur from stimulant use

•  Meth use contributed to over 8 percent of all drug-related Emergency Department admissions

American Academy Of Pediatrics Want Limits Place On Alcohol Ads

In an effort to help curtail drug abuse and alcohol consumption among minors, the American Academy of Pediatrics is launching a campaign to change the way advertisements are allowed to be displayed and distributed.

“It’s clear that advertising is the most effective means of communicating a message,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “And, the American Academy of Pediatrics is fighting fire with fire, which is exactly what is needed. When advertisers elevate alcohol or other substances not appropriate for minors to a level of glamour, or they imply that there is no fun without the use of such substances, it entices minors to try those products. We know that alcohol abuse is the number one substance abused and is one of the greatest problems in America which results in addiction treatment. Studies have shown that the younger a child is when they experiment with alcohol, the more likely they are to continue that experimentation into illegal, more lethal and highly addictive drugs. Alcohol is recognized to be one of the number one gateways to greater substance abuse. Enacting stricter regulations for advertisers could go a long way in changing the face of alcohol experimentation and abuse among minors.”

It is estimated that advertising may contribute up to 30% in the use of alcohol and tobacco and is especially effective on minors. A recently published study showed that mascots commonly used in alcohol ads were nearly 75% as readily identifiable as Bugs Bunny among fourth graders.

Among the hot points within their campaign, the American Academy of Pediatrics seeks to limit advertisement for alcohol when the audience is made up of more than 10% children. In addition, they are also requesting that the White House Office on Drug Control Policy conduct anti-teen drinking public service campaigns. They are also urging parents to become more involved in what media their children are exposed to and limit unsupervised media use.

Affordable Drug Rehab Center Pioneered Individualized Drug Addiction Treatment

In an unprecedented turn of events, a Utah man has voluntarily asked for more jail time in hopes that it will help him kick his heroin addiction.

The 25-year old man’s original charge was a second-degree felony. Instead of pleading down his sentence, he decided to “plead up” to a first degree felony of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. His original sentence carried a term of 1-15 years; his new conviction, a sentence of 5-years to life. He says he’ll soon be happier than he is now because he’ll get off of heroin and within about eight weeks of going to jail, he says that he expects his withdrawal symptoms to subside to the point that his sleep will return to normal.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center issued this statement, “It’s definitely unusual for an individual to want more jail time for their actions, particularly an individual involved in a drug related crime. Normally, they want to complete their sentence so that they can quickly return to their cycle of addiction. Rarely do we see someone take such extraordinary steps to not only begin their journey to recovery but also to stay in recovery.”

Prior to final sentencing, the judge gave the young man one last chance to change his mind and withdraw his guilty plea. He declined.

Mountainside continues, “While this particular course will help this young man in his drug addiction treatment, it’s a rather extreme step. Equally effective treatment options that would have allowed this young man to maintain his future freedom were available. The problem is that sometimes, when faced with a dead-end situation, an individual doesn’t know his/her options. A big barrier to beginning treatment is not only availability of information at the time, but also finding a reliable, safe and cost-effective program that understands not only the addiction, but all of the issues surrounding the addiction.”

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center is a comprehensive and innovative provider of treatment for individuals suffering from drug addiction and alcoholism. Mountainside’s licensed and certified counselors, social workers and clinical treatment team and staff are dedicated to providing an unsurpassed treatment experience to its clients. With diverse areas of expertise, the treatment team works collaboratively with each client and their family to ensure that an individualized treatment plan is designed that will treat not just the symptoms, but the whole individual. Cocaine Addiction Provides Glimpse Into Human Genetic Code

A recent study published in the Journal Science by Mount Sinai School of Medicine shows that chronic cocaine addiction can lead to a repression of a specific gene within the brain. The gene, 9A, is responsible for producing an enzyme that plays a crucial part in switching our genes off and on. Studies show that decreased enzyme production in those who are addicted to cocaine, actually leads to further craving of cocaine, creating the seemingly endless cycle of addiction.

Professionals at Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center in Connecticut and New York find this study quite promising in the battle against addiction. “If the functioning mechanism of this particular cycle can be broken and this particular gene’s activity stimulated, it could certainly go a long way in helping a person overcome an addiction to cocaine as well as other drugs.”

Mountainside further states, “the problem is that once an addiction takes hold, it’s no longer solely organic in nature. A person must overcome social and situational addictions as well, which is no easy task. While we remain hopeful for a future scientific breakthrough targeting physical dependence, we understand that this is just one piece of the puzzle. That is why it is so important for an addicted individual to be involved in a multi-disciplinary drug addiction treatment program, where other aspects of the addiction, like emotional, psychological and social triggers are addressed and treated.”
