Retired Brigadier General’s sobriety offers hope for soldiers

Not only did Vietnam immediately and physically affect now-retired Brigadier General Stanley Cherrie, the ghosts of the war have continued to haunt him decades later.

After having his right leg, right hand and part of his left heel mangled by stepping on a land mine in Vietnam, General Cherrie began drinking heavily, resulting in leading the life of, what he calls, a “functioning alcoholic”. He remained in the military despite his injuries and his private fight to stay sober. In 2010 his private fight became public as he collapsed in front of his fellow comrades at a gala event. Initially reluctant to be forthcoming with his struggle with alcohol, General Cherrie knew that the only way he could remain alive was to enter into alcohol rehab.

“What a story of triumph for a man who gave everything for his country,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “His story can shine as a beacon for soldiers who are currently returning home from war and facing alcohol and/or drug dependence. It shows them that if a retired General can face his alcoholism, they can too.”

The United States military recognizes that soldiers returning from wartime do, indeed, have an increased risk for alcoholism and substance abuse. Three years ago the Army created a program at a half-dozen or so bases that allows soldiers to obtain drug and alcohol rehab without being required to inform their supervisors.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center understands the struggles that soldiers and their families go through when returning home from service overseas. The unique individualized recovery program is recognized as one of the most comprehensive and individualized in the treatment field. Mountainside assists clients and their families from the very beginning of their journey by offering professional intervention services should they be needed.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center is a modern drug rehab facility that is skilled in serving a variety of clients with various addictions and in varying stages of addiction. The caring, compassionate team is made up of licensed and certified social workers and counselors who have extensive experience and specialty in the addiction treatment field. In addition, the staff includes a Nurse Practitioner, as well as a Registered Nurse, both of whom also have specializations and experience within the field of addiction treatment and alcohol rehab.

Drug Facts Week Highlights Importance Of Community Based Drug Addiction Education

This week, the National Institute on Drug Abuse is sponsoring a “Drug Facts Week”. Targeted at teens and young adults, this week centers around debunking myths regarding drug abuse.

“When approaching such a sensitive subject as drug abuse and drug addiction prevention, we have to make sure that we open the lines of communication in a safe way,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “The best way to do this is in the broad sense, at the national level. This type of approach lets teens and young adults know, ‘If you have a question, we’re here and this is the place to get it answered’. One of the most important parts about a national event such as this is that it gets communities involved in affecting change. It helps everyone see just how widespread substance abuse is and fosters the formation of relationships within the community which can offer support for teens and young adults who may not have a mentor to whom they can look for guidance. Community based education also provides a sense of belonging and a sense of likeness to a group of people. And, research has shown that the incidence of substance abuse is less among those who feel they ‘fit’ and belong somewhere.”

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center has long been an advocate of alcohol and drug abuse prevention through education, starting at the family and community level. Since its inception, Mountainside has been committed to creating ways that will help individuals to get and to remain sober.

The compassionate, caring treatment team at Mountainside is comprised of licensed and certified counselors and social workers as well as a Nurse Practitioner and a Registered Nurse, both of whom have specialization and extensive experience in drug addiction and alcohol treatment. For clients who may have psychiatric issues and/or a dual diagnosis, Mountainside provides the services of a Psychiatrist who also has specialization in addictions. As a result of their unique, innovative approaches to addiction treatment over the past 12 years, Mountainside has become the model for the addiction treatment field.

Individualized Drug Rehab Key To Success

Ask anyone in drug rehab what their biggest fear is when they enter back into society and their answer almost always is: fear of relapse.

The cost of drug use is so high, affecting far more than a persons’ finances. Substance abusers know that each time a relapse occurs, they are risking their lives.

“Drug rehab facilities are a very safe environment for drug abusers,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “As a matter of fact, it’s the last safe place an individual will encounter after deciding to get clean and substance abusers know this. They

know that when they re-enter society, they are going to be required to make some serious changes within their lives to insure that they stay sober. That’s why it’s so important for those within the addiction treatment field to affect change at the most effective time: and, that is during a person’s stay in drug rehab. The best way to affect this change is to make certain that a treatment plan is created that is unique to each individual and his or her circumstances and which addresses his or her individualized needs. In order to do this, proper evaluation before and during in-patient treatment is crucial. At Mountainside, our intake interview is just the beginning of the process, yet it plays one of the most important roles in recovery. At that intake interview, we are able to assess an individual’s true treatment needs as well as their relapse risk factors and develop a treatment plan that will truly address those needs on a personal level. Our evidence based research has shown us that this individualized approach to treatment is far more successful than the one size fits everyone treatment.”

Many Drug Rehab Approaches, Holistic Drug Rehab Still Most Effective

The medical field is an ever-evolving field with new technologies and breakthroughs occurring at a rapid pace. Continual strides are being made within the addiction treatment field and time and again, research shows that holistic drug rehab is the most effective treatment for those suffering from various types of addiction.

One particular addiction treatment program has become the standard for drug rehabs worldwide. Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center began its quest for improved treatment methodologies over a decade ago. Since then, it has transformed the face of addiction treatment.

“From a purely logical standpoint holistic drug rehab makes the most sense,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside. “Up until our pioneering research, the alcohol and drug rehab treatment field was utilizing standard addiction treatment modalities. Our hypothesis was pretty simplistic: employ evidence based treatment modalities and provide a variety of different proven modalities to help a person get well. We looked around at different areas in medicine to see the methods that were currently working and then began drawing from those fields to create a program that addresses the complete needs of an individual from the physical issues, to the emotional, social and mental health issues that a person may have. Our success rates have been phenomenal. We have been refining our program to what it is today: our trademarked Integrated Care Model. Although just recently trademarked, our empirical evidence for this treatment model is an evolution of a body of work that spans over a decade. And, we will continually review and further refine our treatment program in the future to insure that we are providing the most optimum addiction treatment options for an individual.”

New Study Shows Cortisol Level A Possible Contributor To Alcohol Abuse

New discoveries are giving more hope for those battling addiction to alcohol. A recently published study indicates a correlation between alcohol abuse and the hormone cortisone.

A study published in England by the University of Liverpool indicates that alcoholics may have a higher incidence of elevated cortisol levels than levels present in the general population. Cortisol, a hormone released under stress, seems to not only affect alcoholics but has also been shown to be elevated in individuals suffering from any type of substance abuse addiction.

“Studies like this demonstrate that addiction isn’t just a social and emotional disease but a physiological one as well that requires the help of addiction treatment professionals,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Within the treatment field, it is important to understand the epidemiology of addiction so that all aspects of the addiction are treated. If we focus only on the social and emotional aspects of addiction, the chances for recovery are diminished greatly. That’s why discoveries such as these are significant and are important to consider in the treatment of addiction to ensure long-term sobriety. Furthermore, studies such as this encourage more research in the hope of finding the right treatment modalities that can reverse the physiological aspects of addiction and bring so many more onto the road to recovery.”

Not only is cortisol a stress hormone, but it is also responsible for helping to metabolize food through a series of insulin releases. In addition, cortisol is closely connected to insulin resistance, another suspected factor in the list of physiological aspects of addiction.

Since its inception, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center has been committed to creating ways that will help individuals get and remain sober.

The compassionate, caring treatment team at Mountainside is comprised of licensed and certified counselors and social workers as well as an on-staff Nurse Practitioner and a Registered Nurse, both of whom have specializations and extensive experience in drug addiction and alcohol treatment.

American Academy Of Pediatrics Want Limits Place On Alcohol Ads

In an effort to help curtail drug abuse and alcohol consumption among minors, the American Academy of Pediatrics is launching a campaign to change the way advertisements are allowed to be displayed and distributed.

“It’s clear that advertising is the most effective means of communicating a message,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “And, the American Academy of Pediatrics is fighting fire with fire, which is exactly what is needed. When advertisers elevate alcohol or other substances not appropriate for minors to a level of glamour, or they imply that there is no fun without the use of such substances, it entices minors to try those products. We know that alcohol abuse is the number one substance abused and is one of the greatest problems in America which results in addiction treatment. Studies have shown that the younger a child is when they experiment with alcohol, the more likely they are to continue that experimentation into illegal, more lethal and highly addictive drugs. Alcohol is recognized to be one of the number one gateways to greater substance abuse. Enacting stricter regulations for advertisers could go a long way in changing the face of alcohol experimentation and abuse among minors.”

It is estimated that advertising may contribute up to 30% in the use of alcohol and tobacco and is especially effective on minors. A recently published study showed that mascots commonly used in alcohol ads were nearly 75% as readily identifiable as Bugs Bunny among fourth graders.

Among the hot points within their campaign, the American Academy of Pediatrics seeks to limit advertisement for alcohol when the audience is made up of more than 10% children. In addition, they are also requesting that the White House Office on Drug Control Policy conduct anti-teen drinking public service campaigns. They are also urging parents to become more involved in what media their children are exposed to and limit unsupervised media use.

New England Drug Rehab Offers Supports To Individuals Who Aren’t Previous Clients

History has shown that in times of economic crisis, individuals’ problems with drugs and alcohol skyrockets. As such, there is a growing need for therapeutic support of these individuals.

As economic times toughen, the response to stress for those at-risk tends to be the use of a substance that distorts their current reality. Relapses from past alcohol and/or drug abuse during these times are always at an all-time high compared to times of economic growth.

A New England addiction treatment facility has expanded its Drug Relapse Program to help individuals to maintain their sobriety during these difficult times.

“Our commitment has always been to help individuals live a sober-free life, regardless of what his or her previous addiction treatment associations are,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center in Canaan , Connecticut . “To that end, our Drug Relapse Program has expanded, offering treatment options for those who feel that they are at a risk of succumbing to the use of alcohol and/or drugs. We’ve found that during this time many recovering addicts and alcoholics need additional support and guidance to help solidify the core principles that they have utilized thus far in their journey to recovery. Our Drug Relapse Program participants range from those with 90 days of sobriety to upwards of 5 years of sobriety. The individuals who have longer times of sobriety are proof that addiction is, literally, achievable and is a lifelong struggle; it is one that we are committed to helping people achieve.”

Statistics show that 2/3 of all relapses for addiction are likely to occur within the first 90 days, without respect to the particular addiction. The first 90 days of sobriety are among the toughest as the physical withdrawals are still present and manifest themselves in poor memory and concentration or as an increased response to stress, all of which can cause a sudden relapse.

Affordable Drug Rehab Offers Renewed Hope For Sobriety

Cost should not be a factor for getting sober and staying that way, but unfortunately that is the reality for many individuals who are addicted to drugs and alcohol.

With no end in sight for skyrocketing health care costs, drug addiction treatment is out of the reach for those who just can’t afford the very high daily costs of treatment. Fortunately, over 12 years ago, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center in Connecticut answered that challenge by being one of the first drug addiction treatment centers to offer affordable drug rehab.

Affordable Drug Rehab Offers Renewed Hope For Sobriety

“Living a full life- a life free of drugs and alcohol shouldn’t belong to the privileged few who can afford treatment, “ begins a spokesperson for Mountainside. “We’ve always believed that everyone should have an equal chance at sobriety, so we designed a unique and comprehensive treatment program that virtually eliminates cost as a factor. Since we began our program, others within the treatment field began to pay close attention to what we were doing, particularly when the then White House Drug Czar, John Walters, invited Mountainside to Washington to discuss the effectiveness of our program. Since then, our program has become the model for drug rehabs worldwide.”

An innovative approach to drug rehab is necessary to successful recovery and Mountainside’s drug addiction treatment program combines several innovative facets of treatment into one cohesive program. Their sobriety success rates are unparalleled in the field, and they credit such long-term success to their unique and innovative treatment program.

While there are many different treatment philosophies utilized throughout the industry, the one that has been found to be most effective is an individualized approach to treatment— at Mountainside, each person is evaluated and given what he or she personally needs on their journey to recovery. Mountainside pioneered such an approach and has helped thousands achieve long-term sobriety.

For more than 12 years, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center has led the way in offering an innovative and individualized alcohol and drug addiction treatment program. Mountainside’s licensed and certified counselors, social workers and treatment team provide quality, compassionate care to each individual in a tranquil, peaceful environment conducive to optimal recovery.

Drug Rehab Center Offers Affordable Drug Rehabilitation

Long before health care reform battles between lawmakers ensued, a highly regarded facility in Connecticut addressed one of the very problems that lies at the core of individuals getting the help they need to recover from drug addiction: treatment costs.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center began its quest to provide innovative, affordable addiction treatment over 12 years ago- and they have succeeded. Affordable costs and innovative treatment plans are why individuals from all over the world continue to seek treatment at this intimate facility. Situated on 39 sprawling acres at the base of a private mountain in the foothills of the Berkshires, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center provides an ideal location for the recovery process to begin.

“The per diem costs at our facility are about one-third of the costs of other drug rehab facilities,” states a spokesperson for Mountainside. “Recognizing one of the biggest barriers to treatment is cost, we designed a program that is affordable for most people and their families. At just $360 daily, we offer comprehensive, innovative approaches to recovery, in a setting that is second-to-none.”

A drug addiction treatment program consists of an individual, comprehensive evaluation of the person entering rehab. By evaluating past behaviors and current attitudes towards treatment, the professional team at Mountainside creates a plan that addresses the needs of each particular person, increasing the chance of successful recovery. Drug addiction treatment at Mountainside begins with one-on-one counseling, coupled with evidence based, innovative and traditional 12-step therapies. Treatment plans are monitored for their effectiveness and are flexible, based on an individual’s needs.

For nearly two decades, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center has led the way in offering individualized alcohol and drug addiction treatment programs. Drug Rehab Discusses Synthetic Alcohol And Implications For Alcoholics

In London, England, ex-drug tsar David Nutt and other drug experts have created a synthetic alcohol that gives drinkers a buzz without the hangover. And perhaps an even better bonus, no matter how many drinks a person consumes, they only become mildly drunk.

The team has developed the colorless, tasteless drink using chemicals related to the sedative Valium. It works on the nerves in a similar way to alcohol, causing the user to be relaxed with feelings of well-being. Their hopes are that it will eventually replace the alcohol content in beer, wine and liquor and that it will significantly reduce binge drinking as well as reduce the number of deaths f r o m alcohol poisoning.

While some may herald this as a true scientific breakthrough, professionals at Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center aren’t as optimistic. “For a person struggling with an alcohol or other drug addiction, this could actually be the catalyst that starts a long cycle of binge drinking. For the alcoholic, there is no middle ground. A common expression among recovering alcoholics is ‘one drink is too many and a hundred’s not enough’- and that really is true for an alcoholic. The feeling of ‘the buzz’ only prompts the alcoholic into drinking more in an attempt to increase the effects of the alcohol. They are continually chasing that elusive temporary feeling of escape that alcohol brings. When an alcoholic can’t achieve the results that he/she seeks, often times they move on to something more potent that will give him or her the desired feeling they are chasing. We strongly believe that’s a dangerous road for an alcoholic or any drug dependent person to start down.”

The drink created by a group at Imperial College in London is still required to go through British government approval as it’s technically classified as a drug. That process could take years and as such, the unnamed drink may never be brought to market.

In addition to its licensed and credentialed counselors, social workers and clinical staff, Mountainside’s medical services include our Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse with specialization in alcoholism and drug addiction treatment. Psychiatric services are available when needed.

Affordable Drug Rehab Center Pioneered Individualized Drug Addiction Treatment

In an unprecedented turn of events, a Utah man has voluntarily asked for more jail time in hopes that it will help him kick his heroin addiction.

The 25-year old man’s original charge was a second-degree felony. Instead of pleading down his sentence, he decided to “plead up” to a first degree felony of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. His original sentence carried a term of 1-15 years; his new conviction, a sentence of 5-years to life. He says he’ll soon be happier than he is now because he’ll get off of heroin and within about eight weeks of going to jail, he says that he expects his withdrawal symptoms to subside to the point that his sleep will return to normal.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center issued this statement, “It’s definitely unusual for an individual to want more jail time for their actions, particularly an individual involved in a drug related crime. Normally, they want to complete their sentence so that they can quickly return to their cycle of addiction. Rarely do we see someone take such extraordinary steps to not only begin their journey to recovery but also to stay in recovery.”

Prior to final sentencing, the judge gave the young man one last chance to change his mind and withdraw his guilty plea. He declined.

Mountainside continues, “While this particular course will help this young man in his drug addiction treatment, it’s a rather extreme step. Equally effective treatment options that would have allowed this young man to maintain his future freedom were available. The problem is that sometimes, when faced with a dead-end situation, an individual doesn’t know his/her options. A big barrier to beginning treatment is not only availability of information at the time, but also finding a reliable, safe and cost-effective program that understands not only the addiction, but all of the issues surrounding the addiction.”

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center is a comprehensive and innovative provider of treatment for individuals suffering from drug addiction and alcoholism. Mountainside’s licensed and certified counselors, social workers and clinical treatment team and staff are dedicated to providing an unsurpassed treatment experience to its clients. With diverse areas of expertise, the treatment team works collaboratively with each client and their family to ensure that an individualized treatment plan is designed that will treat not just the symptoms, but the whole individual. With professionalism and compassion, each client is guided through every stage of recovery and encouraged to participate in a wide variety of evidence-based and cutting edge innovative treatment options.

Cocaine Addiction Provides Glimpse Into Human Genetic Code

A recent study published in the Journal Science by Mount Sinai School of Medicine shows that chronic cocaine addiction can lead to a repression of a specific gene within the brain. The gene, 9A, is responsible for producing an enzyme that plays a crucial part in switching our genes off and on. Studies show that decreased enzyme production in those who are addicted to cocaine, actually leads to further craving of cocaine, creating the seemingly endless cycle of addiction.

Professionals at Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center in Connecticut and New York find this study quite promising in the battle against addiction. “If the functioning mechanism of this particular cycle can be broken and this particular gene’s activity stimulated, it could certainly go a long way in helping a person overcome an addiction to cocaine as well as other drugs.”

Mountainside further states, “the problem is that once an addiction takes hold, it’s no longer solely organic in nature. A person must overcome social and situational addictions as well, which is no easy task. While we remain hopeful for a future scientific breakthrough targeting physical dependence, we understand that this is just one piece of the puzzle. That is why it is so important for an addicted individual to be involved in a multi-disciplinary drug addiction treatment program, where other aspects of the addiction, like emotional, psychological and social triggers are addressed and treated.”

Take Rehab Seriously Or Run The Risk Of Never Beating Addiction

Addiction is both a physical and psychological disease. Addiction treatment, then, must promote both physical and psychological healing. The only successful rehab facilities are those which help their clients get better in mind as well as in body. In the end, there’s no other route to meaningful and lasting wellness.

Those considerations, in turn, are at the heart of Sunset Malibu’s treatment philosophy.

With its world-class caregivers and elegant accommodations, Sunset Malibu is an unparalleled recovery destination. The center has always catered to upscale clients from every corner of the globe. Now Sunset is renewing its commitment to its core values, with the goal of delivering life-changing comprehensive care to individuals who seek it. At Sunset Malibu, the client always comes first.

“Every one of our clients comes to us with some sort of emotional problem,” said Sunset Malibu Program Director Dr. Georgina Smith. “It’s our job to ensure that that problem gets solved, in order to lay a solid foundation for the long-term recovery process. With everything from advanced dual-diagnosis techniques to intensive depression treatment, we make it our mission to help patients heal from the inside-out.”

Unfortunately, that passion for holistic healing is precisely what sets Sunset apart from its competitors.

Most treatment facilities pay lip service to the importance of holistic recovery. But very few of them live up to their own promises. The truth is that many of the most “exclusive” clinics in California only target the physical symptoms of addiction. More often than not, those facilities fail to help clients get better for good.

Under the circumstances, argues Dr. Smith, those shortcomings are inexcusable.

“Addiction ruins lives,” Dr. Smith said. “Addiction treatment can save them-but only if it’s administered with empathy and expertise. We stop at nothing to ensure that our clients receive the best possible support along the road to wellness. To do anything less would be to forsake our personal and professional obligations.”

Substance abuse is an increasingly prevalent problem in the United States and around the world. The good news here is that it doesn’t have to be a fatal one. Sunset Malibu has proven itself capable of helping clients rediscover the world as they used to know it, before addiction stripped them of their hope and joy and dignity. It’s hard to imagine that any service could ever possibly be more valuable than that one.

Take The Stress Out Of Finding The Right Drug Addiction Treatment Center

Addiction treatments are only as successful as the treatment centers that administer them. That sounds obvious, but the truth is that too many prospective rehab patients assume that every facility must be more or less the same. This simply isn’t the case. In fact, only those rehab centers which properly recognize and cater to their clients’ needs can ever be expected to affect meaningful long-term healing.

The practical implication here is that you have to do your research before making a rehabilitation decision. It isn’t enough to simply pick a treatment center based on price or convenience; if you’re going to get better, it’s going to be because you find a place that can meet each and every one of your unique individual needs. Given the stakes in the fight against drug addiction, it’s hard to imagine how you could ever settle for any sort of inferior option.

Rehab Is the Only Way to Recover Successfully

Sunset Malibu, an exclusive treatment center on the California coast, has long been a transformational force in the field of rehabilitation and recovery. Now, Sunset is announcing its redoubled efforts in the fight against depression-related addiction.

Addiction is always at least in part a psychological disease. The logical corollary, of course, is that addiction treatment must always promote psychological, as well as physical, healing. The best rehab facilities are those which most capably serve the emotional and psychiatric needs of their clients. In the end, there is no more effective path to meaningful and sustainable recovery.

These considerations are at the heart of Sunset Malibu’s holistic treatment philosophy.

With its world-class caregivers and elegant accommodations, Sunset Malibu is an unparalleled recovery destination. Whether a client needs Cocaine Rehab or meth rehab, the center has always catered to upscale residents from every corner of the globe. Now Sunset is renewing its commitment to its core values, with the goal of delivering intensive emotional therapy to all individuals who seek it. At Sunset Malibu, the client’s most pressing needs always comes first.

“Addiction recovery has to happen from the inside out,” said Sunset Malibu owner Richard Taite. “Our clinical psychologists use advanced dual-diagnosis techniques to assess each client’s mental health, and how it is affected by his or her substance dependency. We’ve found that that sort of holistic approach can make a world of difference.”

That emphasis on comprehensive care is precisely what sets Sunset apart from its competitors.

Many Los Angeles treatment facilities advertise “whole-person” healing programs. The bad news, though, is that very few of these institutions make good on their promises. Indeed, many of the most high-priced rehab centers in California offer wholly inadequate levels of psychological counseling. For their clients, that inadequacy can lead to disaster.

Taite believes that those kinds of shortcomings are absolutely unforgivable.

“There are no second chances in the rehab process,” Taite said. “If you don’t get it right the first time, you may never have the opportunity to it again. At Sunset Malibu, we understand the enormity of our obligation to our clients. We believe that our record of success reflects our commitment to getting in right.”

Drug and alcohol addiction can ruin lives. Addiction treatment programs can help to solve the problem—but only if they help victims heal in body and mind. Sunset Malibu has a long history of doing just that. Those clients who’ve been lucky enough to learn the truth firsthand know that no outcome could ever possibly be more meaningful.

Common Misconceptions Regarding Underlying Medical Risks Associated With Substance Abuse And Alcoholism

Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center Mountainside announced has identified common misconceptions regarding underlying and peripheral medical risks associated with drug addiction and alcohol abuse. Despite the volumes of information on these matters, there is a seemingly large body of people unaware of the extent of the danger that active addiction or alcoholism poses.

Recent studies have shown that besides the immediate and obvious health risks of being addicted to alcohol or drugs, there are other medical problems that can arise as a direct or indirect result of a person’s substance abuse. It is common knowledge that an alcoholic is in danger of cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease and pancreatitis. These are the obvious ailments. There is also the risk for making poor decisions such as getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. This decision has the power to not only affect the substance abusers health but also endangers the lives of others. What is not as apparent are the risks associated with things that a person may do when drunk that they would never do while sober; such as being sexually promiscuous which can lead to conditions like HIV, AIDS as well as a list of other possibilities. It is by addressing these issues that the substance abuse treatment center helps the individual suffering from addiction to recover and become educated about the drug and alcohol rehabilitation process.

People who abuse illicit drugs are also at risk. For example, people who snort powder cocaine are at risk for hepatitis. The risk comes from sharing different pieces of paraphernalia associated with snorting, such as straws or rolled up paper money. There is also the heroin user who puts themselves at risk by sharing needles, cotton, water or “cooking” devices. There is also the risk for IV drug users for bacterial infections. Bacterial infections are responsible for a large portion of hospitalizations of IV drug users. The list of possibilities can go on and on. The point is that besides the apparent risks there are countless other possibilities that can change a person’s life and perspective on life.
