A Bold Move: 79-year old champion bodybuilder competes against 40-, 50-, 60-year olds!

Amador County, CA, May 08, 2015 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — A career spanning nearly 50 years isn’t over yet for Amador County veteran bodybuilder and one of the original Mr. Venice Beach competitors, Arthur Peacock. Peacock, who is turning 80 this year, takes the stage with 40-, 50-, and 60-year olds this Saturday, May 9 at the Contra Costa Bodybuilding Championship, to be held in the Chabot College Performing Arts Theatre.

“There is no doubt that this is a career turning point for me. It’s what I’ve been training for my entire life, but especially the last three years. I’ll have 60-seconds to prove myself—my physique and my poses—with competitors between 40 and 69. That’s potentially almost 40 years younger than me.”

Peacock chose to compete in three classes for a couple of reasons—no 70s bracket existed, and he has every intention of continuing his legacy to inspire others who want to follow their bodybuilding dreams.

“I want people to see me and say, ‘I can do that. Look at that guy up there at 80.’ I want to inspire to the end; I’ve done it all my life. I’ve had world champions come up to me and say, ‘I remember when you stopped and spoke to me as a teenager, and now, 20 years later, I’m the number one guy. Thank you.’”

It was in 1965, as an already athletic young man in his early 30s, an avid swimmer, surfer cyclist, and hiker, that Peacock went as a spectator with his friends to his first bodybuilding competition. “I knew I wanted to do that—that I could do that.” And that he did, taking home his first trophy in the 1968 Mr. Venice Beach competition, which gave rise to a half-century career with more than 50 major titles earned.

Health Gorilla Releases Mobile Application for Doctors

Digital Health Leader Expands Marketplace Access with Mobility

SUNNYVALE, CA., 2014-8-20 — /EPR Healthcare News/ — Health Gorilla™, Inc., the first online healthcare marketplace to connect doctors and clinicians with over 9,000+ diagnostic labs and 35,000+ radiology centers, has announced today the release of Health Gorilla mobile.  Health Gorilla mobile provides access to the Health Gorilla Marketplace through the Apple® iPhone® and iPad™.

Today over 68% of doctors have standardized on the Apple platform to communicate with peers and patients. Doctors can now use their mobile devices to place electronic orders with Health Gorilla mobile to diagnostic labs, radiology centers, physical therapy, skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and durable medical equipment (DME) and other medical providers nationwide with the ability to track and review the results instantly as they arrive.  Physicians can then forward electronic results within their practice or exchange them with peers and patients to streamline the process and improve quality of care.

According to a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine noted that approximately 59.3% of all of a primary care physician’s daily emails were for the interpretation of test results and 21.7% were responses to patients.  The use of email generally increases the risk for doctors and their patients as most email services are not HIPAA compliant.

Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that researchers from the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston conducted a survey of primary care practitioners and found that a third reported missing alerts about test results from an electronic health record notification system designed to inform them when a patient has abnormal test results.

Doctors are adopting iPad and iPhones as the platform of choice to communicate with peers and patients. Health Gorilla mobile integrated messaging greatly reduces the risk in communication between a doctor and their patients by offering a fully HIPAA compliant environment. Health Gorilla mobile enables a physician to securely and compliantly forward diagnostic test results, radiology images, admission and discharge summaries and other clinical documents to patients and care coordinators through secure messaging.

Benefits of Health Gorilla Mobile Include:

  • HIPAA compliant and ONC modular certified MU2 solution
  • Order in less time than it takes to use fax forms
  • Receive results faster wherever you are
  • Forward results to patients instantly
  • Immediately refer results to another doctor and send messages
  • Eliminate error prone paper processes
  • Mobile solution available at no charge for doctors and their teams

“We believe that the value proposition is clear and compelling for doctors and their teams.” said Steve Yaskin, Chief Executive Office, Health Gorilla, Inc.  “The existing process is heavily dependent on paper, fax and manual processing.  It is slow, cumbersome and prone to error.  Doctors can better manage their time, and the time of their administrative and care coordinating teams, by using the power of the marketplace through the Health Gorilla app.  Now they have one place to order from any diagnostic lab, radiology center, hospital, physical therapy, sleep center, SNF and other healthcare providers in the United States.  A doctor can start with us the first day and begin ordering through the marketplace immediately.  Health Gorilla is the first to deliver this capability.  No other vendor can provide this benefit.”

Health Gorilla mobile is available as an approved Apple® enterprise application and will be distributed to existing Health Gorilla Marketplace users via a secure link for the next month.  In September Health Gorilla mobile app will be available from the Apple® store and will be fully integrated with the Apple® Health app upon its release.

Aging and Genes: Nutrition is Key

Each year, millions of Americans die of preventable, often chronic disease. This happens because people believe disease is caused by things they can’t control: inherited genes or aging. Neither is true. Health experts know that about 80% of health status is determined by daily choices and gene activity, not inherited genes or age.

Most genes are active day and night. They respond to many activities, especially nutrition. Other areas play a role, including, exercise, stress, weight and inflammation. In fact, it’s normal to replace about 1 billion cells every hour, and over time, that complex process of cell division can cause mutations and errors. What’s more, those risks are markedly increased by an unhealthy lifestyle.

A new, breakthrough article called, “Telomeres Genes and Aging” explores these critical issues and includes the latest research. The article includes critical “how to” tips to prevent chronic disease and improve longevity! It’s based on more than 50 credible source links, including numerous studies and expert sources. Some key findings are:

1. Nutrition and micro-nutrient intakes (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants) are key factors for gene activation and repair, including telomere length and longevity.

2. Other lifestyle areas contribute to gene health, including weight status, sleep, stress, activity, etc., and they all contribute to gene function, replication and repair.

3. Sirtuin proteins also help to activate or silence genes, especially those for metabolism, stress response, brain function, longevity, etc. Sirtuins are also enhanced by nutrient intake and harmed by nutrient deficiencies.

There is now enough research to show how to maximize gene health and replication, including telomere length, health and longevity. By making the right choices, gene health can be maximized, including the repair of mutations and genetic errors. Humans can largely control their health and destiny today!

Want Vibrant Wellness? Free talk by Encinitas physician December 4th

Dr. Diana Hoppe, Encinitas Ob/Gyn physician, is giving a free talk at the Kaila Beauty Bar and Med Spa in Encinitas on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 5:30pm-7:30pm.

If living a vibrant life is on your to-do list, you’ll want to learn what this well-known physician has to say about your taking charge of maintaining good health. While we are living in a “toxic soup,” Dr. Hoppe, who is an integrative physician, believes that healthy aging is attainable.

Dr. Hoppe will talk about how to support the body’s ability to cleans toxins so cells can be nourished using positive thinking, exercise, healthy foods, and valuable supplements. Dr. Hoppe says, “It is my sincere desire to help individuals feel, live and perform their very best.”

A highly respected clinical researcher and popular public speaker, Dr. Hoppe earned her medical degree at the University of California, San Diego, where she also completed her internship and residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology.

Dr. Hoppe is a distinguished physician who has practiced integrative medicine in Encinitas since 1989. Among her many accomplishments, she wrote a book called “Healthy Sex Drive, Healthy You,” writes a weekly newsletter and blog, spoke on the Dr. Oz Show, and San Diego Living Show (www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1NCazPmriI (Preview)). She is hosting a seminar with four other doctors called “Vibrantly You” on Jan. 18, 2014. Her website is www.DrDianaHoppe.com

Dr. Hoppe will discuss the hormonal aspects of stress and toxins, and why they make us sick, tired and fat. Focusing on how to de-toxify and help the body to reach optimal health and weight, she will suggest the use of simple core supplementation to support and nourish our inner environment so the body can start to heal itself.

As a physician who is known for wanting to empower her clients to take responsibility for their wellness, after a great deal of investigation, Dr. Hoppe decided to work with the company called Orenda International. Dr. Hoppe found that Orenda is a highly ethical company, endorsed by other reputable doctors. In her research, Dr. Hoppe found that Orenda International uses a paradigm shift called “Awaken, Cleanse and Feed” that supports healthful aging.

Having offered herself as a “guinea pig” to try the new Orenda “Clean Burn Shape” program for effective weight loss, Dr. Hoppe found she could actually shed—without difficulty–17 pounds that she previously failed to get rid of no matter how many different programs she tried to adhere to and found to be unsuccessful. “It is so rewarding to be able to slender down and wear clothes that have been too small for a number of years—especially with the added benefit of having more energy!”

Dr. Hoppe says, “We have the honor of having George Hall, one of the co-founding brothers of Orenda International, join us for the evening.” Hall will share his insights about how to maintain optimal health and will be available to answer questions about the products and the company. Dr. Hoppe adds, “George is not only full of information and positivity—but he makes difficult information easy to understand using his keen sense of humor to keep us entertained while learning.”

The public is cordially invited to attend this 90 minute talk to learn how stress and toxins can impact health and the aging process. Question and answers will follow. Learn how Dr. Hoppe addresses the toxic overload we are all being subjected to, no matter how pure we try to be.

The Orenda website is available for perusal. For those interested in learning about the products or the “People Lifting People” philosophy of the Orenda International company, see “Addressing the Host” and other videos at www.ThisIsOrenda.com/DrDianaHoppe

This talk is free and the general public is welcome. Doctors, acupuncturists, massage therapists and other health professionals who are interested in helping their clients improve their health, cleans their bodies and/or lose weight are specifically invited to attend. 20 cm Long Worm In The Human Eye, First Ever Recorded On Video

Can you believe that a 20 cm worm can house itself in the human eye? But one has to believe one’s eyes.

Here is the video clip of a 20 cm long worm being removed from a human eye through surgical procedure. It is the first time ever that such a long worm growing in the eye has been recorded. The video has evoked great interest among medical students as well as the general public.

http://www.indiavideo.org/health/loa-loa-worm-removing-surgery-8857.php

Dr. Ashley Thomas Mulamoottil, the doctor who recorded this unique surgery says that this is the seventh worm that he has removed in the last one decade and it is also the longest.

The worm Loa Loa was originally found in Africa and has now reached Asia. The mangrove fly or deer fly is believed to be the carrier of this worm. The eggs of the worm enter the human body through small wounds inflicted by the fly. The death of the worm inside the body could be fatal as it could contaminate the blood. The disease is known as microfilariasis or Loa Loa infestation (Loiasis).

The video portal www.indiavideo.org and the Indian language portal www.oneindia.in are taking the video to the world. According to Mr. M.R. Hari, Executive Editor of India Video, the process recorded by Dr. Ashley fetched 2 million views on Facebook in three days and this persuaded them to make a short movie with supporting information to make it useful. Loa Loa disease could be a major health problem in future and hence an awareness campaign is the need of the hour. ‘We take up that mission now’ says

Mr. Sriram Hebbar, CEO of One India.

New Book, “Bush Medicine of the Bahamas” is the 2012 Recipient of Mary W. Klinger Book Award for Outstanding Book of the Year

Ethnobotanist, Jeffrey H. McCormack, Ph.D., says that what makes “Bush Medicine of the Bahamas” unique is its innovative, multi-faceted, cross-cultural approach that integrates oral history with botany, anthropology, and pharmacology. Its integrative approach and readable style make it especially appealing to Caribbean travelers, herbal practitioners, and educators. It also serves as a guide to medicinal flora.

The residents of the Bahamas practice a form of traditional medicine using tropical plants for curing diseases and treating ailments. On his website (http://www.bushmedicine.org) lead author, Jeffrey H. McCormack, Ph.D., writes that the enslaved African ancestors of the Bahamian people brought to the New World a practical knowledge of medicinal plants, and a legacy of “medicinal plant literacy” that helped them “read” and recognize the potential healing qualities of the many new and unfamiliar plants of the Bahamas. Under the influence of European and colonial practices, their diverse beliefs and healing practices were then simplified, distilled, transformed, reformulated, and further refined by generations of experimentation. This distinctive form of medicine is of value today for what it tells us of a unique culture, traditional healing, and the therapeutic value of their plants.

“Bush Medicine of the Bahamas” is the recipient of the 2012 Mary W. Klinger Book Award for outstanding book of the year, awarded annually by the Society for Economic Botany. The book has also been selected for the 19th annual Virginia Festival of the Book held in Charlottesville, Virginia, March 20-24, 2013.

Dr. McCormack says that the book is a comprehensive treatment of Bahamian bush medicine, dedicated to the preservation and continued use of this knowledge before it is lost. Chapters explore the cultural roots, principles, and practice of bush medicine. The materia medica covers 120 medicinal plants and 22 non-botanical remedies, including details of administration and dosage, pharmacology, and cross-cultural uses of bush medicine. Throughout the book, colorful oral histories provide details of the healers’ practices and glimpses of the culture of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. What makes the book sing are the oral histories and personal stories. As internationally-celebrated nature writer Gary Paul Nabhan has written, “… what beautiful stories they are, some of them with healing power in their own right.”

This book can also serve as a field guide to medicinal flora and will therefore be of interest to nature-minded travelers throughout the Caribbean. Currently, it is available through several distributors in the Bahamas and U.S., and online at http://www.bushmedicine.org/orders-retail.html

Published by JHM Designs Publications, Charlottesville, VA, this is a large hardcover book (9” x 12” x 1”) of nearly 400 pages, including 161 illustrations (104 in color). Additional illustrations include photographs of bush medicine practitioners and island landscapes where they harvest their plant medicines. A dictionary of Bahamian dialect is included in the appendix. There are four indexes including common name, scientific name, subject index, and index of medicinal plants according to principal uses.

Excellent advance reviews from Gary Paul Nabhan, James A. Duke, Rosita Arvigo, and Roy Upton. For example: “This is the most comprehensive and richest ethnobotanical presentation on traditional bush medicine that I have seen …”

The lead author, Jeffrey Holt McCormack, Ph.D., is formerly a faculty member at Middlebury College, and the University of Virginia. Trained in natural products chemistry and physiological plant ecology he has worked in the fields of sustainable agriculture, genetic preservation, plant breeding, and ethnobotany. Co-author, Kathleen Maier, P.A., RH, is a nationally known herbalist, and recipient of the first Medicinal Plant Conservation Award bestowed by the United Plant Savers. Co-author, Patty Wallens, M.A., has a background in medical interviewing and home-based counseling.

Smoking, Obesity And Lack Of Activity Named As Global Killers

Research published in leading medical journal The Lancet suggests that a lack of exercise can be as big a killer as obesity and smoking.

According to the study, approximately one third of adults do not do a healthy amount of exercise, and it is suggested that this could be causing 5.3 million deaths worldwide each year – the equivalent of one in ten deaths – from related illnesses such as breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Nutritionist Caron Leckie, who works for the UK’s largest provider of chef prepared meals and delivered diets, Diet Chef, comments: “In my experience the weather has a big impact on activity levels, certainly in the UK, and many people use it as an excuse to stay indoors and watch television, rather than getting out and about.

“In addition to this, thousands of our customers have jobs which see them sitting down at a desk for up to nine hours each day. It is logical that this sedentary lifestyle can be conducive to obesity.”

Ms Leckie also added that Diet Chef is “working hard to help people to lose weight with our calorie-controlled diet” and that as a company they are also “working closely with a personal trainer to offer advice and tips on how to move more, no matter what your age, weight or health status.”

It is recommended that adults should do a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, this equates to just over 20 minutes per day.

According to a report by the BBC, “researchers said the problem was now so bad it should be treated as a pandemic”.

Ms Leckie’s top tips for motivation to exercise include:
1. Add An Activity
2. Try Something Different
3. Find a Positive Each Week
4. Take up a Hobby

Ear Plugs Help You Sleep Soundly Without The Use Of Drugs

All Ear Plugs, an online ear plug retailer, has seen an increase in popularity for sleeping earplugs. Heartech Silentear earplugs have taken the top spot, offering a noise reduction rating of 32 decibels (dB), which eliminates most sounds and allows the wearer to fall asleep peacefully.

Claire Brown, E-Commerce Manager at All Ear Plugs has said that earplugs can be just as, if not more, effective than sleeping pills. “When you suffer from sleepless nights, it’s very easy to turn to tablets in hope that they will make a difference. However, a more cost effective way of ensuring a good night’s sleep can lie in wearing earplugs. Sleeping earplugs like Mack’s Pillow Soft earplugs can eliminate surrounding noises allowing wearers to fall asleep peacefully and quickly.”

It’s easy to fall asleep in silence and that is what sleeping earplugs aim to provide, silence. Eliminating noises such as the sound of ongoing traffic or next door neighbours’ dog can create a peaceful atmosphere. Once that is removed all the thoughts of what you would like to do to the barking dog or the person blasting their horn will turn into peaceful dreams.

The amount of noise you wish to block all lies in the earplugs noise reduction rating. For instance Mack’s Ultra Safe Sound earplugs can eliminate noises up to 32dB. That is the equivalent of a loud conversation and an office environment. It may not seem much, but when you wear these earplugs the sound of city traffic can be reduced from 80 decibels to 48dB.

All Ear Plugs suggests that people should try out a pair of sleeping earplugs before reaching for drugs. Earplugs could offer you the solution you’re after at a fraction of the cost.

Please note if a lack of sleep is affecting your daily life and you feel that it’s a problem, please consult with your GP.

Big Mountain Pharmacy Launches a New Blog: Blogging the Drugs

One thing that has often been lacking from online Canadian pharmacies is information. Not only about the drugs on sale themselves, but also about illnesses and general news on the medical industry such as regulation and equipment.

That is what triggered Big Mountain Drugs to start their health information blog, which is now fully up and running on their website offering articles packed with information about common illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, erectile dysfunction (impotence) and acne. Not only that, they have also released articles giving useful information to help with particularly common issues. These include helping patients with poor eyesight by giving tips on how to identify medication safely, and giving family and friends of patients’ advice on how to tell the difference between dementia and depression.

Information like this is extremely valuable to patients, as they can learn more about the drugs that they are taking and the conditions that they are taking them for. The knowledge to patients increases safety as they can easily spot the symptoms of complex or potentially dangerous illnesses, and learn how to deal with the issues that come with many conditions. Blogging the Drugs from Big Mountain pharmacy, which can be found on their website, now lists many informative articles to help their customers. All of the information is free, and is written by medical professionals giving accurate and interesting information and facts.

One customer said: “Blogging the Drugs from Big Mountain pharmacy is extremely helpful and I’ve discovered a lot of new things about my illness that I didn’t know before, including information about the drugs that I am taking so that I can keep an eye out for side effects. It makes me feel much safer that I have more knowledge than I did before”.

Big Mountain Drugs commented “We wanted to add value to our customers by allowing them to make more informed decisions. Although they cannot buy most of the drugs without a prescription, it still gives them the opportunity to learn about the drugs that they are prescribed by their doctor so that they can speak with their doctor if they have any concerns. It also helps them to learn about their illnesses so that they can be aware of any issues such as symptoms of their conditions”.

One concern however, is that online Canadian pharmacies as of recent times, are no longer allowed to advertise on Google unless it is in their own country, which will mean that many people searching for information on drugs online will not be able to find the blog unless they live in Canada if they use Google to search for it.

You can join the blog on Facebook (bigmountaindrugs) and Twitter (bigmountaindrug), some of the most popular social networking sites so it is always very easy to connect and check out any new information that is issued by Big Mountain Drugs. They also post videos on Youtube and you can subscribe by RSS feed so that you get information in new articles as soon as they are posted online.

The Exercise Myths

There are still many popular misconceptions about how to lose weight or tone up stomachs, bottoms and thighs – with exercise routines left over from the days of ‘go for the burn’ aerobics and Jane Fonda-style videos.

Sit-ups have traditionally been thought of the best way to tone stomach muscles – but this might not be the case. Firstly, lots of sit-ups or crunches alone won’t tone a flabby belly – you need to combine any exercise with other exercises as well as eating a balanced diet. Sit-ups also target the most superficial ‘six-pack’ core muscles, but too many of these will cause the tummy to bulge out, leading to a pot belly.

Those trying to lose weight often believe that exercising for longer periods of time will lead to increased weight loss. But exercising hard for a long time will produce excessive amounts of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, which begin to break down muscle tissue.

High-intensity exercise is good for heart health, but not effective for fat loss. Studies have shown the best way to burn fat is by carrying out moderate to light-intensity exercise, such as a brisk walk.

Those who are finding it hard to shift stubborn fat, should come for a consultation with an expert surgeon at The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group offer a range of cosmetic procedures to help people achieve the perfect body, including tummy tucks and liposuction, as well as weight loss surgery, including gastric bypasses, balloons and bands.

David Ross, Chief executive of The Hospital Group, which has 19 clinics across the UK said: “People who come for a consultation have often been trying to beat the bulge through various diets and exercise regimes for years, but many do not have access to knowledge to make a lasting difference.

Overweight Struggle With Weight Loss Because Of Heightened Sense Of Smell

New research has found that some overweight people have a greater sense of smell for food which may cause them to struggle with diets and weight loss.

Carried out by the University of Portsmouth , the study found that those who were overweight, or had a high BMI, had a far heightened sense of smell for food compared with slim people.

Volunteers took part in the study where they were asked to join in with a series of mini experiments that tested their smelling ability.

The results revealed that most people are better at detecting food odours just after they had eaten rather than when they were hungry with experts citing this as one of the reasons many people continue eating long after they are full up.

Scientists believe this new research could help explain why some people struggle to stay slim or stick to a strict diet.

Lead researcher Dr Stafford, said: “It could be speculated that for those with a propensity to gain weight, their higher sense of smell for food related odours might actually play a more active role in food intake.

“Hopefully this research will stimulate more work in this area with the potential to help those who struggle with their weight and those who treat people with weight problems.”

Those who are worried about being overweight should book a consultation with an expert bariatric surgeon at The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group is the UK ‘s biggest provider of weight loss surgery, including gastric bands, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Many overweight people struggle with their food intake and often find themselves in a vicious cycle of over eating.

Top British Hypnosis & NLP Trainer Jonathan Royle Exposes The Hypnotherapy Conmen

Hypnosis is both an increasingly lucrative and rapidly expanding form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAMS) and also a hugely popular form of Stage Entertainment thanks to people like Paul McKenna.

Top British Hypnosis & NLP Trainer Jonathan Royle Exposes The Hypnotherapy Conmen

But shockingly what most Hypnotherapy Practitioners won’t tell you or dare to admit is that the so called healing and therapeutic power of Hypnosis is nothing more than an elaborate Placebo Effect combined with basis suggestion and classical psychological conditioning akin to Pavlov’s Dog.

What’s even more alarming is the fact that the majority of Comedy Stage Hypnotist’s don’t even realise that whilst what they are doing works due to nothing more than Social Compliance, Basic Human Psychology and Devious Manipulation of their volunteers combined with simple suggestion and the Placebo Effect, that in actual fact what they are doing is potentially dangerous to their subjects as they are messing with people’s Belief Systems and Expectations for the entertainment of others which can have potentially very damaging side effects.

Now for the first time ever British Hypnotist Jonathan Royle has decided to lift the lid on this “Snake Oil” industry and save people potentially thousands of pounds in wasted treatment fee’s or training course payments, whilst also helping them to avoid falling prey to the rapidly growing number of badly trained, illegal, unlicensed, uninsured and potentially dangerous amateur Street Hypnotists messing with peoples mind on a street corner near you!

After years of research and real world experimentation Royle, aged 34 of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England is so confident of his findings and conclusions on how so called Hypnosis actually works and his statement that “There’s No Such Thing As Hypnosis” that he has become the first Hypnosis Trainer to offer a 100% One Year (365 Day) Money Back Guarantee on his Home Study DVD and Multimedia Diploma Training Package.

Today Royle said “Hypnotherapist’s and Stage/Street Hypnotists who study this new package are literally Guaranteed to become Safer, more knowledgeable and more successful in their work or else I will give them their money back!”

Royle wants to stop people getting conned out of thousands of pounds for long winded Hypnotherapy and NLP Courses which brainwash them to believe in something that actually does not even exist and that’s why he has just released a Free 80 Page PDF Report entitled “The Seven Biggest Secrets of The Famous Name Millionaire NLP’ers – Life Coaches & Hypnotists” at http://www.magicalguru.com/freereport/

Royle who is one of Britain’s Leading Hypnosis Expert’s as illustrated at http://www.magicalguru.com/roylesresume/ explained that despite the fact that Hypnosis Does Not Exist and actually is nothing more than an illusion of truth combined with The Placebo effect, when this is fully understood by Alternative Practitioners and utilised to treat patients in the manner he teaches in his unique Home Study and Live Training Courses that dramatic changes can still occur!

UK Enjoys Highest Net Income in Europe but Life Quality is Poorest

The UK and Ireland are the worst places in Europe to live, according to the latest uSwitch.com Quality of Life Index. While the UK enjoys the highest net household income in Europe, quality of life is the poorest, proving that there is more to good living than money. Long working hours, lower holiday entitlement and a high cost of living all contribute to a poor quality of life in the UK – and it’s not much better for the Irish either:

•Best quality of life can be found in France and Spain. The worst can be found in the UK and Ireland
•Depressing: UK workers can expect to work 3 years longer and die 2 years younger than their French counterparts
•Cost of living: consumers in the UK are paying above the European average for fuel, food, alcohol and cigarettes
•Health and education: the UK’s spend on healthcare and education is below the European average. Only Ireland and Poland spend less on healthcare, but Ireland has more doctors and hospital beds and Poland has more beds than the UK
•Longer life: Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden all enjoy longer life expectancy than the UK
•Retirement age in the UK has dropped, but it is still the 4th highest in Europe
•UK enjoys highest net household income, but workers in the UK get lowest holiday entitlement in Europe.

The latest uSwitch.com European Quality of life Index reveals that people in the UK are still getting a raw deal compared with their European neighbours. Despite the fact that the UK enjoys the highest net household income in Europe – GBP35,730 a year, which is more than GBP10,000 a year above the European average – this does not translate into a good life. Instead, people in the UK can expect to work longer, die younger and enjoy lower standards of healthcare and education.

The uSwitch.com study examined 17 factors in order to understand where the UK sits in relation to nine other major European countries. Variables such as net income, taxes and the cost of essential goods, such as fuel, food and energy bills, were examined along with lifestyle factors, such as hours of sunshine, holiday entitlement, working hours and life expectancy to provide a complete picture of the quality of life experienced in each country.

The findings show that people in the UK and Ireland have the poorest quality of life, while the French and Spanish enjoy the highest. The UK gets the lowest number of days holiday per year, pays the highest prices for diesel and food and spends below the European average (as a percentage of GDP) on health and education. It also has the 4th lowest life expectancy in Europe and workers retire later than most of their European counterparts.

France, which topped the league, enjoys one of the lowest retirement ages, has the longest life expectancy in Europeand spends the most on healthcare Its workers also benefit from 34 days holiday a year – compared with only 28 in the UK – and it comes only behind Spain and Italy for hours of sunshine.

Spain, which topped the league last year, enjoys the most sunshine – but it has more to smile about than just that. The Spanish can expect to live a year longer than people in the UK, enjoy the highest number of days holiday in Europe (41 days a year) and pay the lowest fuel prices. And as if that’s not enough to celebrate, they are paying the lowest prices for alcohol too.

This year’s index does not reveal the full impact of the recession – this can be expected to show next year. However, France officially went into recession in May 2009 and has already emerged again (August 2009). This quick turnaround could see it maintaining a high quality of life despite the economic difficulties facing most European nations. Spain entered recession in February 2009 with no official announcement as to when it is likely to exit. Poland is the only country in the study not to have gone into recession and it is widely expected to avoid it throughout 2009.

Out of the two countries experiencing the lowest quality of life, Ireland went into recession first in September 2008 while the UK officially went into recession in January 2009. Both are yet to exit and the impact on the UK is expected to be severe and long lasting. Unemployment has already hit a 14 year high at 2.47 million workers or 7.9% of the workforce – the highest rate since 1995. Even with the UK due to start recovery shortly, the jobless toll is still expected to rise with the British Chambers of Commerce predicting numbers exceeding 3 million next year.

Importantly, as politicians start to plot a way out of the financial mire, quality of life in the UK could suffer even more. This is because public spending is likely to be reined in so that the amount spent in the UK on education and health could fall. The Labour Government has already indicated GBP2 billion of cuts to come on education but it has so far rejected advice from management consultants to cut the NHS workforce by 10% over the next 5 years. The UK is already spending below the European average (as a percentage of GDP) on both health and education.

Health

The UK is spending below the European average (as a percentage of GDP) on both education and health. The largest shortfall is on health though, where the UK is spending 8.2% of GDP compared with the European average of 9%. Only Poland and Ireland spend less on health than the UK. France is the biggest investor, spending 11% of GDP on health, closely followed by Denmark and Germany.

The UK has 2.1 doctors per 1,000 people and 3.9 hospital beds. In contrast, France has 3.4 doctors and 7.3 beds. Poland, which spends less than the UK on health, has more hospital beds – 5.2 beds per 1,000 people. While Ireland spends less than the UK, but achieves a greater number of doctors per 1,000 and a higher number of hospital beds (2.9 doctors per 1,000 and 5.6 beds).

Lower spending on education and health could also be a contributing factor to the UK’s lower than average life expectancy, which is 4th lowest in Europe. There is some evidence to suggest that people who are better educated live longer and in better health than those who are less educated. This link between education and health cannot be explained by behavioural differences alone and has led scholars to suggest that having the right educational policies could improve a nation’s health considerably.

As well as shorter lives, people in the UK can expect to work for longer than most of their European neighbours too. The average European retirement age is 62 years old, however UK workers can expect to carry on working for 6 months longer than this. Poland has the lowest retirement age at just over 59 years old, closely followed by France. In real terms, these differences mean that UK workers can expect to work 3 years longer and die 2 years younger than their French counterparts.

Well being

Workers in the UK put in an average of 37 hours a week. Spain, France, Italy and Poland all work longer hours, but they also benefit from more days off. While workers in the UK get the lowest holiday entitlement in Europe – 28 days a year – the Spanish benefit from 41 days a year, the highest entitlement. As a result, UK workers can expect to work an average of 5 days more a year than their European counterparts and 13 days a year more than their Spanish counterparts. Over a lifetime of work (45 years) a Spanish worker could expect to have over 5 years off as holiday, while a UK worker could expect to have just over 3 years off.

Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, says: “There is more to good living than money and this report shows why so many Brits are giving up on the UK and heading to France and Spain. We earn substantially more than our European neighbours, but this level of income is needed just to keep a roof over our heads, food on the table and our homes warm. It’s giving us a decent standard of living, but it’s not helping us achieve the quality of life that people in other countries enjoy.

“For too long the focus in the UK has been on standard of living rather than quality of life. As a result we have lost all sense of balance between wealth and well-being. The recession could prove to be a turning point, forcing us to re-evaluate our way of life, get back to basics and to the things that really count. Consumers are already beginning to do this – the Government and its policymakers would do well to follow suit.”

Brits Could Be Waiting Too Long To Do Something About Their Health – Reports PruHealth

PruHealth’s bi-annual Vitality Index* – which tracks the nation’s health trends across stress, exercise, diet, smoking, health knowledge and check-ups – has shown that it would take being diagnosed with a health condition to encourage the 79% of people in the UK to improve their health and fitness.

The Vitality Index also shows a distinction between what UK adults consider the biggest health concerns facing the nation and their own individual health concerns. For example, while obesity was considered the biggest health issue facing the nation, from an individual standpoint, cancer was the greatest health concern nationally. Inability to stop smoking and alcohol abuse made it into the top 5 biggest health issues facing the nation; however these concerns were replaced by stress and Alzheimer’s disease on the list of individual health concerns. Conversely, poor diet and nutrition was considered one of the biggest health concerns facing the nation by almost one fifth of UK adults (19 per cent), but only 8 per cent saw it as an individual health concern.

Although people in the UK appear to be clear on the big issues that are facing the health of the nation (with 81 per cent of people knowing what they should and should not do to be healthy), when it comes to translating this knowledge into healthy behaviours, people appear to be struggling. Only a fifth exercise the recommended 5 days a week or more, and just under a quarter eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Shaun Matisonn, CEO at PruHealth, said: “The most concerning figure here is undoubtedly the 79 per cent of people who will wait until they are diagnosed with an illness before making any attempt to improve their health and fitness, rather than making a lifestyle change now in order to prevent being diagnosed with an illness in the future.

“Finding a way to motivate a change in lifestyle is the biggest hurdle we face as a society, but using incentives to encourage people to look after their health and wellbeing is an extremely powerful motivator.”

Commenting on the findings, Dr David Grainger, Senior Fellow, Cambridge University, said: “Even though three-quarters of people see the health of themselves and their loved ones as a key priority, for the majority it would take diagnosis of ill health to motivate any significant change of lifestyle. It is hard to over-estimate how big a hurdle this is to promoting change. It is disappointing to see that only 13 per cent of respondents had regular health checks, despite the emphasis of the public health message on prevention rather than cure.

“Interestingly, though, more than half of the population say they would change their lifestyle in response to rewards and incentives. Giving serious thought to incentives for a healthy lifestyle must therefore move higher up the public health agenda.”

*The research was carried out on behalf of PruHealth, the insurer that rewards policyholders for engaging in healthy behaviour, by Ipsos MORI. A nationally representative sample of 3,034 GB adults were questioned online in January 2009. Results are weighted to be representative of the GB adult population. Seasonal variations may affect some responses.

About PruHealth
PruHealth was launched in October 2004 as a joint venture between Prudential and Discovery Holdings from South Africa. Since launch, PruHealth has grown quickly. It now covers over 190,000 lives and in a sample of its individual customers, one third said they had changed their behaviour for the better because of its Vitality reward scheme which encourages policyholders to look after their health.

The launch of the health site OmegaLifeLine.com boosts about all the health benefits of omega fatty acids and essential oils.

With consumer trepidation, it is great to see a site so dedicated to exploring the real health benefits of essential fatty acids. History tells us that during a weakening economy many people will suffer from poor eating habits as their buying patterns change.

Families will choose more budget conscious meals which may mean that they will save money in the short run, however if we take a step back and look at the long term picture it could equate to a more significant loss in the future.

As individuals health worsens (the culprit being a poor diet), society can expect to see a greater strain on an already taxed medical system. These individuals put themselves and their families at risk of more serious ailments. Diseases which could drastically reduce or end a families income.

Education is power and Omega Life Line is poised to educate men, women and teens about the necessity of consuming ‘healthy fats’. The modern diet is extremely unbalanced in the ratio of omega 3’s to omega 6’s. And that is a very dangerous and avoidable position for any person to be in.

Creator of the site Samantha Criddle explains, “everyday people are looking for miracle solutions to cure all their problems and sometimes it’s simpler than what they expected. The health benefits of omega oils are tough to ignore”.

What many people don’ t realize is that the body cannot manufacture the essential fatty acids that it requires to maintain proper body health and function. And that’s where people get into trouble. In understanding where to source healthy, nutrient rich omega oils, people can empower themselves and realize a healthier lifestyle.

For more information on omega oils we invite you to visit www.omegalifeline.com.

The National Center for Health Statistics reported recently that the number of children diagnosed with food allergies has spiked eighteen percent in the last ten years

Dr. Armen Ketchedjian, author of the book Will It Hurt? A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery, explains that the best way for parents to keep track of their child’s changing health needs is to keep up with regular appointments with the pediatrician and to log any sudden changes in temperament or physical condition following a meal.

“Pediatricians use these regular visits as a way of establishing a baseline for your child’s state of health,” says Dr. Ketch, as he is called by his patients. “It’s important that parents show up to these appointments and notify the pediatrician of any unusual activity.”

Dr. Ketch added that laboratory tests can verify most allergies but that pediatricians are also a good resource because they are trained to notice any differences in physical health that should raise a red flag. Symptoms associated with an allergic reaction include:

-hives
-wheezing and other lower respiratory problems
-vomiting
-nausea
-stomach cramps

In his book, Dr. Ketch advises that most allergic reactions will express themselves in anywhere from the first minute following a meal to a few hours afterward. He recommends that parents set an appointment with their child’s pediatrician following these incidents, especially if the reaction was severe enough to warrant a hospital visit.

Will It Hurt? helps educate parents about pediatric surgery. It is an easy-to-read resource that will give you, your child and your family the help and reassurance you need to make the surgical experience as stress-free as possible.

Listed in The Guide to America’s Top Anesthesiologists by the Consumer Research Council of America, Dr. Ketch trained at Cornell Medical Center, with a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a pain management elective at Boston Children’s Hospital. He has also worked to help develop new techniques in ambulatory anesthesia, taught medical students and residents, and cared for more than 10,000 patients.

Dr. Ketch is also the author of the children’s book Golden Apples (winner of the 2008 Reviewer’s Choice Award), a beautifully illustrated book that aims to help educate children about the dangers of drug abuse.

An Ancient Chinese Practice Is Proving As Effective As Pre-Surgery Sedatives In Reducing Stress Levels In Child Patients Undergoing Anesthesia

During recent tests, doctors placed small plastic acupressure beads, encased in an adhesive pad, on the Extra-1 acupoint between the eyebrows of a test group of children prior to surgery. The effects were dramatic, lowering stress and allowing the patients to avoid the nausea and prolonged effects from anesthesia that the sedatives can cause.

The patients whose beads were placed on the Extra-1 point showed a significant decrease in stress levels as compared to no noticeable difference in a control group that had the beads placed on a spot above the left eyebrow, not known as an acupressure spot.

The successful use of the beads to reduce stress is in keeping with the kind of treatment that one anesthesiologist says can help to make recovery times shorter.

Dr. Armen Ketchedjian, author of the book Will it Hurt? A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery, says that pre-surgery anxiety has a negative effect on a child’s body and how it recovers from the stresses of surgery.

“It’s been shown that children that have lower stress levels prior to surgery have better outcomes,” says Dr. Ketch, as his patients call him. “It’s absolutely critical that parents contribute to this process by finding ways put their kids at ease.”

In his book, Dr. Ketch emphasizes the use of soothing words and honest communication as part of the overall effort to keep children calm. Efforts that can include acupressure beads or regular sedatives.

“One of the most important factors is the parent. If the parents are stressed, the child is going to mirror that,” says Dr. Ketch. “Parents can do their child a great service by learning what they can about the surgery so that their own fears are alleviated.”

Dr. Ketch hopes that his book will contribute to increased attempts by surgeons and other caretakers to reduce stress in pre-surgical patients. His advice includes:

¤ Accompany your child into the operating room if allowed
¤ Taking advantage of any specially designed waiting room that has a fish tank or toys for your child
¤ Making sure your child is well rested and has followed the surgeon’s pre-surgery instructions to the letter
¤ Bringing games or stuffed animals to the hospital to help your child feel more at home

“Children are better off the more relaxed they are. Anything that can be done to help them relax is a step in the right direction, and I encourage parents to ask their doctors about the day of the surgery and what can be done to provide for their child’s state of mind,” says Dr. Ketch.

Will it Hurt? helps educate parents about pediatric surgery. It is an easy-to-read resource that will give you, your child and your family the help and reassurance you need to make the surgical experience as stress-free as possible.

Health World Web is announcing addition of videos to the Health Communities from icyou.com, new medical providers’ ads campaign and new gadgets for doctors, clinical trials and support group searches

Health World Web, the premier Health 2.0 social networking site, has launched three new improvements for the site HealthWorldWeb.com.

Starting this week, users of Health World Web will be pleasantly surprised as video content from icyou (www.icyou.com), the source of health-related videos online, will be included in the communities. The icyou videos will complement the already formidable body of user-generated content on Health World Web ranging from user experiences, reviews, recommendations, blog posts and community forum sharing. “I’ve been always obsessed with providing more relevant information to our users. Addition of videos is just another big step in that direction. Videos are attractive because they are personal, compact and informative. As soon as you join the community of interest, not only you can participate and learn from blogs and forums, you can instantly gain knowledge from the best medical resources on that topic in the most convenient way ”, says Daniel Kogan, Founder and CEO of Health World Web.

“icyou is committed to bringing health information to as many people as possible,” said Nina Sossamon-Pogue, Vice President of Media for Benefitfocus, icyou’s parent company. “That’s why we’re proud to partner with Health World Web, which has found a great way to help build communities around the health issues that impact our lives.”

Aside from beefing up the content, Health World Web continues its mission to bring technology, social networking and patient interaction together by tapping into the widget technology making the search for medical professionals, doctors and specialists easier and more convenient.

The Doctor Search gadget will provide users with a tool to search for more than 1.3 million medical providers across the United States, including MDs, dentists, chiropractor, PTs and others. Along with Medical Providers Search Gadget HealthWorldWeb releases Clinical Trials Search, Support Groups Search gadgets. Now, anyone can embed a simple script into any Web site or personal iGoogle page to complete a convenient doctor, clinical trial or support group search powered by Health World Web. Our gadgets are available on this page (http://www.healthworldweb.com/pc/gadgets).

Lastly, doctors and medical professionals can also look forward to a better Health 2.0 with Health World Web. The problem with advertising on the Web has always been relevance. Imagine pitching obstetrics services to men or weight loss programs to anorexics. With Health World Web’s doctors advertising campaign, a paid advertisement is only displayed on the most relevant places on the site: whether it is on a community area, user area, forums, blogs or pages within each of those areas.

With the success of its Personalized Recommendation Engine (PRE) in providing a faster and more efficient way to deliver relevant content and information to patients, HWW decided to tailor its PRE technology so that doctors and other medical professionals could effectively advertise on the site. The PRE system utilizes patient data and activities on the site and then matches that information with doctors’ services, thereby bringing his or her specialty onto the patient’s screen.

What’s even better is that all advertisements are treated – and priced – equally. In observance of the service Health World Web gives to its users’ community, only relevant advertisements are served. Hence, our advertisers do not have to worry about having a flashy advertisement, nor do they have to bid for space or exposure. Only relevant ads shown to interested people—at a very low fixed cost!

About Health World Web
