Obesity and Society

Obese and overweight people are forecast to cost the nation £50 billion – half the NHS budget for a year – by 2050 if the trend continues unchecked, with diabetes the biggest draw on these figures.*

The NHS spends an estimated £600m a year on treating diabetes – the largest in primary care – and tackling obesity levels in Britain could save an estimate £950 per person each year. **

As well as drug spend, hospital admissions for Britans with problems caused by weight-related diabetes also doubled, from 7,000 in 2003-04 to 14,320 in 2007-08. **

In five years, the total numbers of people admitted to hospital as a direct result of obesity rose by 190 per cent, with 5,056 admissions in 2007-08. **

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “Barely a day passes without the cost of obesity on the NHS being mentioned. It’s a very real fact that as well needing to tackle obesity on a personal level, the nation’s obese must consider what a huge drain their weight-induced health problems are on the NHS.

“Having spent nine years working in obesity in the NHS, I feel that the only way to curb the epidemic is with the support of private healthcare, such as gastric band surgery at The Hospital Group.”

A report on the matter produced these key findings:

• Awareness of the problem is not low. †
• 49% of those questioned blamed their poor diet for their size. †
• 63% blamed a lack of exercise. †
• Stress was blamed by 20% of those questioned. †
• 14% blamed their genes and the same percentage said that they were too busy to do anything about their weight. †
• Giving up smoking, large breasts, beer and ‘emptiness’ were also accredited. †

A separate survey revealed that some overweight people believe their weight has affected their careers. The following are some interesting comments that came from this survey:

“I think it’s natural that people have less respect for you if you are overweight.”

“Some people look upon overweight people negatively in that they feel they cannot control how they eat, which may reflect in working life.”

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2056 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 5th-7th October 2009. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

OnePoll questioned 4000 adults between 19-21 October 2009. The survey was carried out online and the panel used was aged 16+ and nationally representative.

The Real Cost of Obesity on your Health

Obesity is responsible for 9,000 premature deaths a year in England. It reduces life expectancy by, on average, 9 years. The Department of Health’s Change4Life campaign also advises that after quitting smoking, keeping a healthy body weight is one of the best ways to reduce your chances of getting cancer.

With all these home truths, why are so many people ignoring the real cost that obesity can have on their health?

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “One of the most prevalent health issues for the obese is diabetes. 2.5 million people in the UK suffer from Diabetes and a great proportion of those with Type 2 could be cured if they lost their excess weight. “Obesity is recognised as the main factor in contracting Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to further complications such as foot ulceration, nepthropathy, retinopathy and heart disease – all with serious risks and discomfort for the patient, but also costly to treat.”

Research published by the American Journal for Medicine showed that following obesity surgery, 87% of type 2 diabetics either saw a complete cure or improvement.

Cirian added: “We are in a recession, but eating out has become the norm – the team of dietitians at The Hospital Group find that obese families think nothing of popping out for all-you-can eat pizza or Chinese on a regular basis. “This is the root of the problem. People who maintain a clinically obese body weight have a habit of consuming body-builder levels of calories and of course that has to change with a restricted calorie intake. “But it’s also a case of looking at what makes up a person’s diet. You can consume 1,000 high-quality calories and blossom or the same number of calories in junk food and you’ll be ill.”

The Cost of Obesity on Family Life

Playing with your children, relations with your partner or nights out with friends – all something people take for granted, but obesity can take away.

The Real Cost of Obesity report found that those living with a BMI over 25 begin to notice an effect on their relationships with those closest to them, but at this stage few recognise it is their weight which is dragging them down.

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “The team of dietitians at The Hospital Group see people every day who didn’t consider their weight to be the cause of the problems in their lives until they were ranking well above the 30 BMI level.”

The Department of Health has forecast by 2050, 9 in 10 adults will be overweight or obese* – being overweight is now the norm. “These people often feel terrible about themselves. Our job is to nurture and nourish their love of food, a healthy balanced diet and being socially and physically active.

“The real problem is that those 9 out of 10 adults are today’s children. Without meaning to, some people in Britain are living poorer lives and beginning to set their children on the same track.”

A recent report on the matter uncovered the following:

•Nearly half (45%) admitted their weight prevented them playing with their children and enjoying leisure with their family, with the top five activities ranked as:

o Swapping clothes
o Adventure sports
o Horse Riding
o Rollercoasters
o Bike Rides

•Almost a quarter (22%) admitted their children or family had hinted at embarrassment or concern about their weight – with men experiencing this more than women.

•37% of the obese people questioned said their weight negatively affected their ability to take part in leisure activities.

•22% of the obese people questioned said that their weight had had a negative effect on their sex life.

•11% of the obese people questioned said this had now had a knock on effect on the relationship with their partner.

•Those who felt their weight didn’t stop them doing any leisure activities was directly proportionate to BMI – the heavier being the more affected (with only 30 severely obese respondents).

A New Study Presented At The 26th Annual Meeting Of The American Society For Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Confirms That Laparoscopic Gastric Banding Surgery Results In An 83% Improvement Or Remission Of Type 2 Diabetes

A new study presented at the 26th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery confirms that laparoscopic gastric banding surgery (LAGB) results in sustained weight loss as well as an 83% improvement or remission of Type 2 diabetes.

A New Study Presented At The 26th Annual Meeting Of The American Society For Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Confirms That Laparoscopic Gastric Banding Surgery Results In An 83% Improvement Or Remission Of Type 2 Diabetes

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery (LAGB) not only results in sustained weight loss for morbidly obese patients, but it also provides an improvement or remission of Type 2 diabetes in 83% of the patients.

This news, the results of a new study, was presented at the 26th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The event was held in Dallas, Texas, and Slimband was there to learn first-hand about the ground breaking study.

To date, this is the largest long-term study on the impact of gastric banding on diabetes. This study strongly suggests that there is a definite connection between diabetes and morbid obesity. The study noted that the patients who achieved and maintained a significant weight loss also realized the greatest remission of diabetes in a shorter time frame.

The study included 95 participants who ranged in age prior to surgery from 21 to 68 years, with an average BMI (Body Mass Index) of 46. Researchers from New York University (NYU) Medical Center conducted the study from January 2002 through January 2004. Approximately 88% of the patients were taking oral medications to control their diabetes and about 15% were using insulin. On average, the patients had been diagnosed with diabetes about 6 ½ years before surgery.

As routine follow up to the surgery, the patients’ weight was monitored and blood tests were done. During the first year, researchers followed each patient on a monthly basis, and during the second year the follow-ups were every three months.

After that, the follow-ups were annual unless more frequent visits were needed. At the end of the five-year follow-up period the data clearly showed that in about 40% of patients, diabetes was in remission and in about 43% it was improved, which resulted in a combined improvement/remission rate of 83%.

The incidence of diabetes and obesity is on the rise and that has resulted in several studies for effective methods for sustaining weight loss and for diabetes remission. Bariatric Surgery has been shown to be an excellent option for the treatment of morbid obesity as well as a way to improve Type 2 diabetes.

ASMBS is a non-profit organization that works to progressively move forward in the science of gastric banding surgery.

Chubby Celebs Make Obesity The “Norm”

Stick thin celebrities have long been held responsible for the pressure on ordinary people to lose weight – now it would seem the tables have turned and fat celebrities are being blamed for the rising obesity epidemic.

Experts say that tubby celebs such as “Gavin and Stacey’s” James Corden and Ruth Jones are making obesity more socially acceptable and “normal”.

The profile of “larger” celebs has considerably risen over the years, with names such as Dawn French, Jonny Vegas, Peter Kay and of course Fern Britton (who has now lost her weight), appearing on our screens.

A recent report revealed that 23 per cent of Brits are now classed as obese compared to just 11 per cent 10 years ago.

More than 2,000 people took part in a nationwide survey in which researchers found that 17 per cent of obese people refuse to consider taking action to lose weight, whether via surgery or extreme diet regimes.

Weight loss doesn’t have to revolve around fad diets and excruciating exercise regimes though. The Hospital Group, one of the country’s leading obesity and cosmetic surgery providers, offers a wide range of obesity treatments including gastric band and body shaping treatments including liposuction and tummy tuck.

Last year The Hospital Group saw a staggering 73 per cent increase in the number of enquires made regarding weight loss surgery, making them the largest obesity surgery provider in the UK.

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of the UK’s foremost weight loss surgery providers.

SurgiCare Has Revealed That Enquiry Figures For Tummy Tuck Procedures Have Risen By Over 70 Per Cent During The First Quarter Of 2009

This increase is great news for SurgiCare who this year received 355 enquiries during the usually relatively slow period between January and March, compared with 207 enquiries over the first three months last year.

Tummy Tuck

This latest data from the cosmetic surgery provider indicates that as the summer approaches many people are starting to become more bikini conscious, and are looking for the quickest solution to get them to their ideal figure and ready for the beach.

Abdominoplasty, which is often commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is usually performed to help remove excess skin on the tummy which has been gained due to pregnancy or as a result of losing a large amount of weight. The procedure is designed to help smooth and add firmness to a person’s abdomen, giving the patient a slimmer and trimmer profile.

These figures follow on the back of a survey carried out by Surgicare on post-op weight loss surgery patients which found that the average reduction in waist size following surgery was 13.2 inches. 80% of patients also expressed experiencing a significant improvement in their overall quality of life since their procedure and 77% stated that they would consider cosmetic surgery again in the future.

Based on these figures and trends from previous years’ SurgiCare is preparing for a record year, as Brits shun the economic crisis and instead seek a confidence boost by preparing to look their best for the beach.

Toronto Weight Loss Surgery Gives Patients A New Lease On Life

Personal weight issues are usually private battles fought behind closed doors. Common feelings of shame, fear and low self esteem felt by individuals waging war against weight issues often keeps them from seeking assistance from friends, family and medical professionals. All it takes is one comforting hand to step into the picture and help put an individual at ease.

One Bariatric Surgery center is working hard to be that helping hand. Using a laparoscopic band, Slimband’s skilled surgical team creates a smaller gastric pouch by encircling the upper portion of the client’s stomach. The band is then adjusted by filling it with a saline solution to achieve the correct restriction. This creates the ability for the client to feel full faster and require less food while still feeling satisfied. Because less food is being consumed by the client they begin to successfully lose weight. On average, clients will see up to a 48% weight loss within the first year following the medical procedure.

Weight loss is the key motivator for gastric banding surgery; however it also results in additional benefits, with clients experiencing improved health, a positive feeling of self-worth and increased energy levels. All of these factors lead to a client leading an overall higher quality of life; becoming more socially engaged, physically active and with lower health risks.

Laparoscopic gastric banding is a simple and safe medical procedure resulting in a highly effective solution to weight issues and obesity-related health risks. There are a number of clients who seek this medical procedure as a way to treat Type 2 diabetes, as it has been proven to reduce symptoms and, in some cases, even cure the disease.

Once a client has attended the complimentary consultation and is qualified for the procedure, they get access to the extensive pre-op support the clinic provides in preparation for their surgery. During the minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery a small gastric band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach. An access port is placed underneath the abdomen wall that will allow medical staff to administer the saline solution for band adjustments.

While weight loss surgery of this type has become common practice in recent years, potential clients are advised to thoroughly research the credentials of a medical facility before undergoing the surgical procedure. While many treatment centers perform this operation, the Slimband clinic provides an unrivaled follow-up program with the expertise of a multi-disciplinary staff.

When a client books their procedure they also have access to the extensive post-operative support. The Slimband Support Program is specifically tailored to address the various needs of people struggling with obesity and weight loss. Their support staff provides knowledge and guidance in the areas of proper nutrition, psychological counseling, physical fitness and medical assistance. Because each of these follow-up treatments is included in the original procedure payment, no additional charges are incurred by the client.

The support program is offered at the Toronto Slimband clinic and outpatient arrangements can be made for long distance clients that live out of the area. Slimband also offers financing options for the surgery through a reputable medical procedure creditor.

Post-surgery clients learn to make better lifestyle changes by learning proper nutrition and how to make healthy meal choices when at home or dining out. Counseling programs guide clients in identifying triggers, creating goals for their new life and how to achieve them. Fitness experts encourage clients to include physical activities in their schedules and create customized fitness regimens in order to regain their self-confidence. Finally, the medical staff provides follow-up care to monitor the client’s progress, track the band’s restriction and fill levels as well as discuss any medical issues a client may be experiencing. The inclusive post-surgery follow-up care extends across a four-year period.

Surgicare Introduces New Vaser Lipo Procedure In Response To A Huge Rise In Smartlipo Enquiries

Following a first quarter year on year increase of 375% in the number of enquiries for SmartLipo through Surgicare, the cosmetic surgery network has announced the introduction of their new Vaser Lipo procedure.

SurgiCare’s current SmartLipo procedure is a revolutionary concept in fat removal, using laser technology to melt fat cells and provide immediately visible results. The introduction of Vaser Lipo technology leads to more selective and gentle procedure that reduces possible swelling and bruising, producing a shorter recovery period.

Liposuction has been around as a favourite body contouring surgical procedure since the 1980s, however a few years ago the technique of SmartLipo, was introduced as a form of Liposuction without the suction to help reduce recovery times. SmartLipo uses a fine fibre optic laser to break up fat deposits which are then gradually reabsorbed by the body over the next 6 to 12 weeks.

Vaser, which stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, is an ultrasound assisted form of Liposuction developed by Sound Surgical Technologies in Utah. Vaser utilizes fine probes which include engineered grooves to help control and restrict the effects of the ultrasound to targeting just the fat and not the surrounding cells, as well as reducing any potential bleeding.

Mark Bury, CEO at Surgicare, said, “Surgicare is always looking for ways to improve patient care and reduce recovery times. The introduction of the new Vaser Lipo procedure will mean even better results for patient and represents a major step forward. With the increase in the number of enquiries which we have already received for SmartLipo procedures this year, we expect to be very busy in the run up to the summer holidays.”

Recent Research Published By The American Journal For Medicine Showed 87% Of Diabetics Either Saw A Complete Cure Or Improvement After Weight Loss Surgery

As the focus on the nation’s expanding waistlines grows, medical experts now believe that weight loss surgery can completely eliminate all types of Diabetes.

The UK’s number one weight loss surgery provider, The Hospital Group, has seen outstanding long-term results for its gastric band patients over the last three years. Of the 106 gastric band operations performed in January 2007, the total weight loss was a massive 300 stone. Obesity is the main risk factor for Diabetes, so sustained weight loss on this level goes a long way towards fighting the condition, which affects 2.5 million people in the UK, according to Diabetes UK.

The research published by the American Journal for Medicine showed that following obesity surgery, 87% of diabetics either saw a complete cure or improvement.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group, said: “More and more people are choosing to have obesity surgery with The Hospital Group and it’s fantastic because people see results so quickly, which gives them the get up and go to live healthier lifestyles – some free from Diabetes. You wouldn’t think it, but Australia is the gastric band capital of the world. Their government recognises the long-term savings it can make by funding obesity surgery on their national healthcare system – and in the same way, obesity surgery in the UK is saving the NHS money by curing Diabetes patients, which is currently costing the NHS £1m an hour.”

The huge surge in demand for obesity fighting treatments such as Gastric Bands, Balloons and Bypasses from The Hospital Group has more than doubled in the last year, rising from 111 operations in February 2008 to 225 in the same month in 2009. Continuing the trend, enquiries into gastric band surgery have risen by almost 25% from 727 in February 2007 to 963 in February 2009. Health-conscious surgery-seekers in February 2008 made 815 enquiries into The Hospital Group’s obesity surgery.

The Hospital Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none. Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of the UK’s foremost cosmetic surgery providers, and the same high standards remain to this day. For further information of The Hospital Group’s range of gastric procedures, surgery-seekers should visit the website www.thehospitalgroup.org or call our patient care coordinators on 0845 762 6727.

Tummy Tuck And Liposuction, Before And After Photos

Tummy tuck and liposuction, before and after photos demonstrate why this combined surgery is becoming ever more popular. At £2846, it has become more affordable for many men and women to have the combined procedure to their tummy region.

Tummy tuck surgery at an affordable price, provided by Beautiful Beings.

Abdominal cosmetic surgery, commonly known as a tummy tuck offers a solution by flattening the slack skin and tightening the muscles of the relaxed abdominal wall, which frequently occurs after pregnancy or a distinct weight loss.

If needed, excess subcutaneous fatty tissue can be removed as well. The appearance and functional results of the tummy tuck are substantial, although scars are inevitable in order to remove excessive skin from the tummy during a tummy tuck. It leaves a permanent scar after. However, it will fade after time and its quality differs per individual. A tummy tuck is not only an aesthetic cosmetic surgery procedure but it provides a solution to functional deficiencies of the abdominal wall, i.e. inferior rectus muscle diastases. A tummy tuck not only brings about a better appearance and function, but it also stops the slackening process of the abdominal wall.

Prices Of Liposuction Abroad Comparison

Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery operations. Cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info; an online information portal for cosmetic plastic surgery abroad offers comprehensive information on doctors, locations and the all-important cost of having liposuction.

Price is usually the most important factor for plastic surgery clients and clinics and doctors abroad can offer quality plastic surgery services at low prices. Online comparison of liposuction prices abroad provides a tool to find out where to have liposuction abroad at the most suitable conditions.

“Liposuction costs can vary dramatically,” says Pavel Hilbert, managing partner of Cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info. “One important consideration is if you want total or local anesthesia; doctors vary on which they prefer and the client’s wishes must be taken into consideration as well.”

Cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info lists prices from nearly 50 surgeons operating in more than 20 clinics in a couple of countries. The average price for liposuction in the Czech Republic is around 600 EUR while the average prices in Poland or Croatia are more than twice as higher than that and prices in Germany even higher.

And while price is an important consideration in making your decision to have liposuction, it of course won’t be the only one. Cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info puts you in connection with other patients as well as surgeons via their forums to get your questions answered; plus informative articles; patient stories and before/after photos to help make your choice the best one for you.

“Liposuction’s costs are directly affected by the number of areas the patient would like to be operated on,” explains Dr. Karel Urban from Esthé plastická chirurgie, a.s. “There are a limited number of areas that can be liposuctioned at one time; and these are issues that need to be openly discussed with a potential surgeon.”

Cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info offers up to date liposuction price and procedure information at http://www.cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info/prices/liposuction.

www.Cosmetic-plastic-surgery.info provides information about cosmetic plastic surgery abroad and presents it to the general public in Czech, English, German, Russian and more languages.

The Harley Medical Group has released its figures for 2008 while also revealing the cosmetic surgery trends that are expected in 2009

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, has reported that the “city boy bonus” cosmetic surgery, which is usually buoyant early in the year, has been replaced with what’s been dubbed “city severance surgery” where city bankers are using their redundancy packages to rejuvenate their appearances for the challenges they face when trying to secure a new job.

Harley Medical also reports that the last three months and into January 2009 has seen a “softening” of 2008’s strong Breast Augmentation market which was popular with 20-something women in particular, whilst the “silver surgery” market has seen an increase. Overall, 2008 was a bumper year for the Harley Medical Group, with surgical business up 26% year on year.

Liz Dale, Director at the Harley Medical Group commented: “The market is moving almost on a weekly basis in 2009, with our City and Marlow clinics seeing a decline on “city boy bonus surgery” but almost pound for pound this market has been replaced by the “city severance surgery” with City patients using redundancy money to fund cosmetic surgery procedures. This has been reported by our City, Chelmsford and Marlow clinics in particular, with over 230 patients coming through the doors of our 25 clinics over the last three months citing redundancy money as their funding source.”

Lorraine Midwinter took voluntary redundancy from Lloyds TSB after 31 years service. Just one month after being made redundant, she booked into the Harley Medical Group’s Bristol clinic and opted for liposuction to her chin and abdomen. She said: “I’d thought about having surgery for some time but losing my job helped me make up my mind to go ahead with the procedure. Having the procedure has given me a huge confidence boost. I managed to secure an excellent new job two months after my severance surgery.”

While the breast augmentation market has slowed down over the past three months, facial surgery has enjoyed an uplift of 9% over the last quarter, which is in part due to “city severance surgery” patients opting for facial procedures. Experts also claim that the uplift in facial surgery could be down to a desire amongst people to increase their employability by improving their “fresh faced appeal”. Rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and face lifts have seen the strongest three month growth.

In 2009 The Harley Medical Group predicts that while surgical procedures, without enjoying the big patient increases that have been common in recent years, will continue to make up the majority of the bookings, non-surgical treatments will continue to grow significantly in 2009.

The Harley Medical Group’s programme of 2009 non-surgical product launches has begun with the introduction of the Obagi Blue Chemical Peel. Following an 86% growth in skin treatments year-on-year for 2008, the highly effective Obagi Blue has been dubbed by doctors as the “Recessionista’s Facelift”, thanks to its striking results and relatively low cost.

Amongst the other new treatments due to be released in 2009 exclusively through The Harley Medical Group is the first and only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment for successfully reducing and removing stretch marks, a problem that afflicts nearly 90% of all women over the age of 25 and a new liposuction for removal of unwanted fat that is faster, less traumatic and far more effective that the current treatments available in the UK or Ireland.

The Harley Medical Group Announce Postcodes Predict UK Surgery Preferences

Following a data crunch of 400,000 postcodes of cosmetic surgery patients, The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery company, has revealed the UK’s cosmetic surgical capital. Newcastle has been officially announced the top of the ops of the UK – with more cosmetic surgery procedures and treatments per capita than any other UK city.

Unsurprisingly, London came in second place with looks conscious Essex folk from Chelmsford coming in third place in the UK’s Cosmetic Surgery Postcode Charts, produced by The Harley Medical Group.

Other cosmetic surgery hot spots were Bristol, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester. Top procedures for each cosmetic surgery postcode were also identified with Breast Augmentation popular in Bristol as well as Newcastle, while London claimed the title of Botox Capital of The UK.

Liz Dale, Director at The Harley Medical Group said: “We started the data crunch in order to identify the best locations to open our next five clinics and the data team started to see very strong cosmetic surgery postcode trends appear – with patients happily travelling up to three hours to their nearest clinic. Postcodes can now been seen as a clear indicator as to how likely someone is to have cosmetic surgery, and even where there is an increased likelihood towards certain procedures.”

The results also revealed the further North a patient lives, the bigger the cup size, as patients in Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds, as well as Cardiff and Bristol on average 47% more likely to have a Breast Augmentation than any other region. London is officially The Botox Capital, with Londoners 71% more likely to opt for the wrinkle removing jab and the City clinic using 200% more vials of the Botox toxin than any other clinic. In the south coast town of Brighton, non surgical Laser Hair Removal is the order of the day especially amongst the clinic’s male patients, who account for 43% of the treatments.

In Birmingham and Bristol more tonnes of fat are removed by Liposuction than the rest of the country. Brummies are also 60% more likely to opt for the eyebag removal op – Bletharoplasty. The Irish are losing inches thanks to tummy tucks and breast reduction surgeries with residents in Belfast being 35% and 72% respectively more likely to have these ops than any other region. Those living in Nottingham are 52% more likely to go under the knife for the perfect nose.

Chester residents, home to many WAGs, are most likely to opt for top to toe packages. They’re 38% more likely to have a Face Lift. They also buy two thirds more packages of non surgical treatments including the Y-lift – a combination of Botox and Fillers – an alternative to a Face Lift.

Newcastle Clinic manager, Anne Newby added: “We’ve seen patient numbers increase by 27% since last year as the demand across both surgical and non surgical treatments increases. Whilst

Breast Augmentation is the most popular op, patients, aren’t necessarily increasing cup size dramatically – a C cup is the norm.”

Harley Medical Group Reveals That People Are Funding Their Cosmetic Surgery By Working A Second Job

Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, has found that a growing number of patients are funding their cosmetic surgery procedures by working a second job or putting in extra hours due to the current poor economic climate.

New findings from Harley Medical Group show that 22% of patients from its 23 UK clinics said that they had done overtime or taken on a second job to pay for surgery. This number is up from the 11% of people who had worked extra hours just 6 months previously. It was discovered that patients usually undertake extra work for 6-12 months to help fund their surgery, with bar and restaurant jobs, direct selling and market research proving to be popular choices for second jobs.

Director of Harley Medical Group, Liz Dale, said, “As well as taking on extra work to raise money, many of our patients are dipping into saving schemes and cutting down on holidays, socialising, shopping and home decoration to fund their plastic surgery. It’s not uncommon for patients to research and plan for their cosmetic surgery two to three years and for this reason, they’re unlikely to want to now put this off and instead they consider their procedure to be an investment. Surgery gives them improved confidence, enhancing their lifestyles financially and socially.”

The new research from Harley Medical Group also found that the most popular surgical procedure among women currently is breast augmentation with liposuction not far behind. Cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction and rhinoplasty have also proved popular with men.

Cosmetic surgery is booming in the UK despite the credit crunch, with enquiries at The Harley Medical Group up 35% year on year.
