Bath Salts Abuse Tops Newest Designer Drug Trend

The use of bath salts among teens and young adults is fast becoming the drug of choice to obtain a “legal high” because of their relative low cost as well as their ease of acquisition.

“Designer drugs are simply legal substances that have been modified to produce a high,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “The concept of designer drugs isn’t new; in fact, it has been around for decades. Individuals discovered that they could obtain a high from ordinary chemicals such as paint thinners, glue and aerosol cans. The effects of the substances being manipulated are becoming increasingly dangerous compared to their predecessors. And, the abuse is growing at an alarming rate. Unless lawmakers enact laws banning bath salts, we’re going to have a new type of drug epidemic on our hands.”

Bath salts are commonly smoked, snorted and injected. Their effects have been compared to a hallucinogenic cocaine, with users experiencing much of the same devastating and dangerous side effects such as convulsions, high blood pressure, heart attacks and even death.

If you know or suspect that your teen or young adult is abusing bath salts or any other type of substance, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center offers professional intervention services to assist you in getting them the help that they need to recover. For the past 13 years, Mountainside has established itself as an innovator within the addiction treatment field, and the treatment modalities Mountainside utilizes are regarded as among the most cutting-edge approaches in helping individuals to get, and to remain, sober.

Underage Drinking Continues To Plague America

It’s no secret that many of America’s youth are looking for the quickest fix or high. Often times, they turn to a readily available substance found in many Americans’ homes: alcohol.

Statistics show that by age 18, 70% of teens have had one drink. While it’s true that, when teens do drink, they drink less often than adults; however, when drinking they tend to drink more than adults: approximately 5 drinks on a single occasion.

In addition, research indicates that 40% of adults who started drinking before age 15 say that they have the signs of alcohol dependence, four times higher than for adults who delayed drinking until after 21 years old.

“Underage drinking is a continuing and growing problem in America and is one that is hard fought on many fronts,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Programs such as DARE and other school-based education programs go a long way in getting the message out about the dangers of underage drinking. With continued effort, we believe that we can decrease the underage drinking statistics and give renewed hope for the future of America.”

Underage drinking is a major contributor to deaths among those under 21 years old. 5,000 people under 21 die as a result of underage drinking annually – approximately 2,000 from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 from homicides, 300 from suicides and hundreds more from other injuries.

If you know or suspect that your teen or minor has a problem with alcohol, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center offers professional intervention services to assist you in getting them the help that they need to recover. Children With Alcoholic Parents Have Increased Alcoholism Risk

A recently published study out of Europe shows that children who have one or more parents who either abuse alcohol or who are alcoholics, have increased risk of alcoholism.

In addition, the study seems to indicate that this predisposition occurred more highly in female participants than in their male counterparts.

“Parental factors, regardless of what they are, always have a strong influence on children,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “It’s no wonder that alcoholism and alcohol abuse demonstrates the same. Early intervention in affected families is necessary to help determine other risk factors and to react in time to assist families in not perpetuating the cycle of abuse. Some times, children feel as if they will, inevitably, become what their parents are from a negative perspective. With alcohol and drug abuse education and early intervention, we are able to show these affected children that their future can and will be different. With a concerted social effort, we can help affected families heal and become alcohol-free.”

While there are many factors which influence alcoholism risk in families, repeated studies do show that genetics do play a large factor in the cycle of drug and alcohol abuse.

If your loved one is in denial about their alcohol use, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center offers professional intervention services to assist you in getting them the help that they need to recover. For the past 13 years, Mountainside has established itself as an innovator within the addiction treatment field, and the treatment modalities Mountainside utilizes are regarded as among the most cutting-edge approaches in helping individuals to get, and to remain, sober.

Majority Of Alcohol Abusers Believe They Don’t Need Treatment

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently released a study that shows the majority of alcohol abusers don’t believe that they need treatment.

Data from the 2006-2009 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health show that there are more than 7.4 million American adults, ranging in age between 21 to 64, who have untreated alcohol abuse disorders. Among those, 98.8 percent don’t believe that they need treatment. That leaves just over 500,000 individuals who recognize the seriousness of their disorder.

“One of the first indications of alcohol abuse is denial,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Clearly, this data supports that assertion. Alcohol abuse may initially begin as recreational, and then the frequency increases. While the increased use may seem gradual, the effects are profound. The abuse begins affecting personal relationships, their work, and they may begin having trouble with the law as they spiral out of control. For those on the outside, it seems glaringly obvious that there is a problem. For the user, they are just in denial. That’s why it is so important to have family members and friends who are willing to lovingly confront the individual so that the affected individual can receive help.”

Those with alcohol abuse disorders have drinking related behaviors that put them and others in high risk of immediate physical danger as well as long-term danger from the consequences of alcoholism, including death.

Foreign Study Shows Early Age Drinkers, Stressful Situations Result In Heavy Drinkers

A study out of Germany shows that young adults who consumed their first drink of alcohol at an early age, and also were subject to stressful situations, tended to become heavy drinkers.

The study, which will be released in the June edition of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research , sampled young adults who took their first drink at early ages. The earliest age reported was 8; most, however, had taken their first drink before the age of 14. The research highlighted that, those who took an alcoholic drink earlier in life, when experiencing stress, they used alcohol as a coping mechanism when dealing with that stress.

“In general, stress can be a large factor in alcohol consumption,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Studies such as this one reinforce the working hypothesis that states: ‘the younger the exposure to alcohol, the greater the chance of dependence’. And, the dependence doesn’t necessarily come from routine use but, as this study suggests, as a response to emotional stress. Most alcohol abuse grows from the need to have a coping mechanism to deal with every day issues. Instead of traditional therapies, many turn to the bottle: a quiet, secluded way to cope. We need to help our youth by providing proper ways for them to talk about their frustrations and confusion and by showing them that there is a way to deal with stress that doesn’t involve drugs or alcohol.”

The cited research did not show that any particular event had any greater effect on alcohol use than any other. The researchers have stated that more research is needed to make those determinations.

Effective Alcohol Rehab Limits Widespread Impact Of Alcohol Abuse

The problem of alcohol abuse is widespread and is becoming a growing epidemic, particularly among the youth of America . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 52% of individuals 18 years of age and older are current regular drinkers of alcohol.

“Excessive alcohol consumption is troubling on many fronts,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Not only does it tear families apart emotionally and mentally, but the socio-economic impact of is abuse affects everyone. We’ve got a legal substance that, when abused, will simply and completely destroy lives. If we want to wage and win this war, alcohol use and abuse education is crucial, starting at a very early age.”

The CDC statistics indicate that the number of alcoholic liver disease related deaths are nearly 15,000 annually. In addition, the annual number of alcohol-induced deaths, not including accidents or homicide, are nearly 25,000 annually.

Those who abuse alcohol face a particularly stressful challenge. Teen Heart Throb Justin Bieber Has Made It A Point To Have All Alcohol Removed From His Presence

In a day where the words “celebrity” and “rehab” go together like peanut butter and jelly, teen heart throb Justin Bieber has made it a point to have all alcohol removed from his presence.

In a recent trip to Dublin, Ireland, Bieber insisted that all alcohol be removed from the mini-bar in his hotel room as he felt that having it remain there, even under lock, sent the wrong message to his fans, the majority of which are under the US legal drinking age.

“We applaud Justin Bieber’s decision to distance himself from alcohol,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehaband Alcohol Treatment Center . “Mr. Beiber has such a loyal following, most of which are teens and certainly under the legal drinking age. He went out of the way to make his point of, ‘I’m under the legal drinking age, I don’t drink, I won’t drink, I won’t even have it around me.’ To us, this is profound and sends a powerful message to the youth of America . There’s no better public service announcement for underage drinking than a teen celebrity living a life that exemplifies that message. The influence his actions will have, we’re certain, will be profound.”

Alcohol use runs rampant among teenagers today. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reported statistics showing that 72% of students have consumed some amount of alcohol by high school graduation and 37% have consumed alcohol by eighth grade.

Spotting Signs Of Teen Drug Use, Not Always Easy

Raising a teen is perhaps one of the most challenging phases of parenthood, particularly with the increased rates of drug experimentation and alcohol abuse.

What may be even more challenging, however, is knowing and understanding the signs that could indicate drug and/or alcohol use in teens and assimilating that information so as to come to the proper conclusion.

“There are so many different substances that can be used to get high,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehaband Alcohol Treatment Center . “Ordinary over-the-counter cough and cold medications, as well as simple motion sickness prevention medicines, are routinely being used to get high. With so many different substances being used it can be difficult to know the various symptoms that these chemicals cause and how to react accordingly. There are, however, tell-tale signs that should send up red flags of warning for parents. If parents begin noticing that their child is more moody than usual or begins to withdraw from family or other normal activities, they should begin to look for other signs such as poor work performance in school or a job, as well as decrease in personal hygiene. These are some of the more common signs exhibited by teens who are using drugs and alcohol. Many times parents will just have a gut-feeling, with no real solid evidence to base those feelings on. We highly encourage parents to go with those gut-feelings and use them to be pro-active in finding out if their child has a problem with drugs or alcohol. Obviously, sometimes the gut feeling will be wrong: the good news is that a child has never died from a parent addressing a gut-feeling; on the other hand, children are dying more and more from the abuse of alcohol and drugs.”

While one particular sign of drug use may be present, it doesn’t mean that abuse is occurring. It takes a combination of factors as well as good, solid instinct to be able to intervene and help a child to avoid drug and/or alcohol abuse.

Increase In Number Of Teens Acquiring Alcohol At Home

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration recently compiled past and current years data from their annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health and discovered that over 700,000 adolescents, ranging in age from 12 to 14, drank alcohol in the past month. Of the youth who consumed alcohol, 93.4 per cent obtained the alcohol for free and, even more alarming, nearly half obtained their alcohol in an unexpected setting: at home.

“Data such as this is important in winning the war on underage drinking and drug abuse,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “It further emphasizes what we have known all along: drug and alcohol prevention for youth begins in the home. Sometimes, parents are reluctant to have conversations with their children about tough subjects like these. But, opening up the lines of communication between parents and children is paramount in preventing the abuse of alcohol and drugs.”

Experts who have commented on this study have indicated that this data isn’t really new for those within the field, and that the family and home setting is, generally, where youth begin their experimentation with drugs and alcohol. But, by bringing this information to the public, parents are will be made more aware of the dangers of substance abuse within the home.

Early Alcohol Consumption Predictor For Future Marital Woes

Indiana University School of Education conducted a study slated for publication in the April 20111 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Researchwhich indicates early alcohol use directly correlates to the age a person gets married.

In addition, the study suggests that those who are dependent on alcohol tend to have early separations once they are married.

“We’ve always known that alcohol dependence causes myriad problems,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “However, studies such as these further emphasize what we have said all along: alcoholism affects the lives of everyone with whom the alcoholic is involved. Alcohol use puts a strain on marriages financially, emotionally, mentally as well as socially. Every single aspect of an individuals’ life is impacted by alcoholism. Alcohol use of a potential spouse is certainly an important point to consider prior to making the decision to enter into such a serious commitment and, if you’re loved one needs alcoholism treatment, it’s best to know that from the outset.”

The Summary Health Statistics for U.S. Adults showed that 52% of adults, 18 years and older, were current regular drinkers, consuming at least 12 drinks in the past year. In addition, 13% of adults 18 years and older were infrequent drinkers, consuming 1-11 drinks in the past year. In addition, statistics for alcohol use tended to go down as a person got older.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center specializes in helping the entire family and loved ones put back together their lives which have been affected by drug and alcohol abuse by offering comprehensive, compassionate programs in an environment conducive to healing. A Call For Tighter Non-Prescription Drug Regulation To Fight Meth Labs

In recent years, the FDA has begun implementing tighter regulations for medications that previously could be obtained easily, off the shelf at any drug store. Yet, many states are pushing for even tighter regulations of non-prescription medications, such as those used to treat colds and flu.

“Cold and flu medications are useful for their intended application, however they can be altered and used for illegal purposes,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “That’s the main reason that the FDA began monitoring the purchase of those substances. Individuals were buying these types of medication in large quantities and modifying them to manufacture illegal meth. Obviously, the tighter regulations have severely limited individuals’ ability to obtain these substances, however there will always be a way to circumnavigate almost any regulation. That’s why many states are considering legislature to require a physician’s prescription for these types of medications. Only time will tell if such measures will be passed and effective in combating the war on drugs and, particularly, meth labs.”

Abuse of any drug significantly alters how an individuals’ brain functions. Brain imaging studies have shown that chronic meth abuse results in reduced motor skills as well impaired verbal learning. In addition, many meth users experience significant emotional problems as a result of their abuse.

The NIDA cites the following statistics on methamphetamines:

•  It’s estimated that of all Americans 12 years and older, 10.4 million have tried meth at least once in their life

•  Over 15,000 deaths occur from stimulant use

•  Meth use contributed to over 8 percent of all drug-related Emergency Department admissions

New England States Among Highest For Drug Abuse Occurrence

A 2009 study recently published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows that non-heroin drug abuse in the United States is highest within the New England states of the country.

Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont were among the states with the highest abuse rates, with Maine topping the list.

“Admission rates for painkiller abuse rose over the nation,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center , a leading New Englandsubstance abuse treatment facility. “But, the highest rates of increase were seen within the New England states, particularly Maine. Since 2000, when the availability and effectiveness of such heavy-duty narcotics like Oxycontin and Fentnyl were discovered, abuse rates have skyrocketed. This is a red alert to clinicians to be vigilant in closely monitoring narcotic prescription use among their patients. Some New England states have a prescription monitoring program which tracks when an individual has a narcotic prescription filled. This measure is effective in helping doctors identify individuals who may be doctor shopping and getting multiple narcotics prescriptions filled. By sharing this information, doctors can take action to insure that they don’t fall prey to a drug abuser who is looking for an easy narcotic prescription.”

Decreasing Alcoholism In Returning Troops Necessary

As America ‘s involvement in the war overseas begins to decrease and the currently deployed military personnel begin to come back home, an increase in alcoholism rates is expected.

“Historically, in wartime, alcoholism among those returning home increases,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Military life in itself comes with stresses that civilian life just doesn’t bring. And, those involved in the military during wartime, encounter even more stress than during times of peace. After returning home, many find it difficult to re-adjust, experience extreme depression and some even suffer with post traumatic stress. This can result in an increase in alcohol consumption in an effort to try and deal with issues that arise from the experience. That is why it is so important for the community and professionals within the community to get involved and reach out to military personnel. Letting them know that support exists, should they need it, can really change the way that many individuals choose to deal with their issues.”

Mountainside has long been an advocate of community based initiatives that help individuals combat the threat of alcoholism and drug abuse. Research has shown that in communities that have an established education and support system, substance abuse rates decline.

President Obama Declares December as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

While alcohol is among the top substances that impair drivers, many don’t realize that other legal drugs cause impairment too.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration recently released a report that indicated that 33 percent of motor vehicle fatalities involved drugs of some sort. As a result of that study, President Obama officially declared December as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.

“It’s all about awareness,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “When the President of the United States declares a certain month or certain day as an official day of recognition, it brings the issue to the forefront of our collective minds. I’m certain that many understand that drinking and driving are dangerous. But, those same people may think that driving under the influence of a prescribed medication is perfectly acceptable when, in fact, it’s not. Making the public aware that this problem exists is the first step in preventing traffic fatalities.”

Every year there are thousands of drivers, as well as passengers, who die while being under the influence of either legal or illegal substances. It’s important for all citizens to remember to make responsible decisions as a driver and passenger prior to taking medications which can alter one’s mental state.

President Obama has made combating impaired driving a priority in drug control and has set a goal of reduction of impaired driving related accidents by 10 percent by 2015. In order to do this, the Obama Administration is encouraging states to explore expanding state laws that would address this serious issue. In addition, law enforcement is working closely with the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to incorporate proper training which will assist officers to more easily identify drivers who are impaired from a substance other than alcohol.

Long an advocate of education through awareness, Mountainside has established itself as an innovator within the addiction treatment field; its treatment modalities are regarded as among the most cutting-edge approaches in helping individuals to get and to remain sober. In addition, its work in drug abuse prevention has been recognized on a national as well as global level.

Affordable Drug Rehab Options For Those With No Insurance

There seems to be no end in sight for the slump in the US economy nor does any health care solution seem plausible in the immediate future.

So often, the health plans of individuals are such that Insurance policies will not cover comprehensive drug rehab for those affected by substance abuse and, unfortunately, those who need the care the most are unable to obtain it.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center foresaw this challenge back in the mid 1990’s and, in response to what they recognized as a growing need, established an affordable drug rehab care model. To date, their program has helped thousands to get on to the road to recovery and a life of sobriety.

“The founders of Mountainside anticipated many challenges within the health care field many years ago,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “When developing our program, we knew that affordability had to be one of the basic tenets of the individualized drug rehab program. So, while establishing a new standard of care through the use of various treatment modalities, Mountainside developed a program that wins widespread acclaim from treatment professionals and is affordable and within reach of the majority of individual’s budgets. Our program of individualized and affordable treatment has since become the standard of care for dug rehabs worldwide.”

It’s estimated that over 40 million individuals within the United States abuse alcohol and use illegal drugs annually, and less than 10% are able to receive the life-changing addiction treatment they need.

Drug Facts Week Highlights Importance Of Community Based Drug Addiction Education

This week, the National Institute on Drug Abuse is sponsoring a “Drug Facts Week”. Targeted at teens and young adults, this week centers around debunking myths regarding drug abuse.

“When approaching such a sensitive subject as drug abuse and drug addiction prevention, we have to make sure that we open the lines of communication in a safe way,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “The best way to do this is in the broad sense, at the national level. This type of approach lets teens and young adults know, ‘If you have a question, we’re here and this is the place to get it answered’. One of the most important parts about a national event such as this is that it gets communities involved in affecting change. It helps everyone see just how widespread substance abuse is and fosters the formation of relationships within the community which can offer support for teens and young adults who may not have a mentor to whom they can look for guidance. Community based education also provides a sense of belonging and a sense of likeness to a group of people. And, research has shown that the incidence of substance abuse is less among those who feel they ‘fit’ and belong somewhere.”

Individualized Drug Rehab Key To Success

Ask anyone in drug rehab what their biggest fear is when they enter back into society and their answer almost always is: fear of relapse.

The cost of drug use is so high, affecting far more than a persons’ finances. Substance abusers know that each time a relapse occurs, they are risking their lives.

“Drug rehab facilities are a very safe environment for drug abusers,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “As a matter of fact, it’s the last safe place an individual will encounter after deciding to get clean and substance abusers know this. They

know that when they re-enter society, they are going to be required to make some serious changes within their lives to insure that they stay sober. That’s why it’s so important for those within the addiction treatment field to affect change at the most effective time: and, that is during a person’s stay in drug rehab. The best way to affect this change is to make certain that a treatment plan is created that is unique to each individual and his or her circumstances and which addresses his or her individualized needs. In order to do this, proper evaluation before and during in-patient treatment is crucial. At Mountainside, our intake interview is just the beginning of the process, yet it plays one of the most important roles in recovery. At that intake interview, we are able to assess an individual’s true treatment needs as well as their relapse risk factors and develop a treatment plan that will truly address those needs on a personal level. Our evidence based research has shown us that this individualized approach to treatment is far more successful than the one size fits everyone treatment.”

New Study Shows Cortisol Level A Possible Contributor To Alcohol Abuse

New discoveries are giving more hope for those battling addiction to alcohol. A recently published study indicates a correlation between alcohol abuse and the hormone cortisone.

A study published in England by the University of Liverpool indicates that alcoholics may have a higher incidence of elevated cortisol levels than levels present in the general population. Cortisol, a hormone released under stress, seems to not only affect alcoholics but has also been shown to be elevated in individuals suffering from any type of substance abuse addiction.

“Studies like this demonstrate that addiction isn’t just a social and emotional disease but a physiological one as well that requires the help of addiction treatment professionals,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Within the treatment field, it is important to understand the epidemiology of addiction so that all aspects of the addiction are treated. If we focus only on the social and emotional aspects of addiction, the chances for recovery are diminished greatly. That’s why discoveries such as these are significant and are important to consider in the treatment of addiction to ensure long-term sobriety. Furthermore, studies such as this encourage more research in the hope of finding the right treatment modalities that can reverse the physiological aspects of addiction and bring so many more onto the road to recovery.”

Not only is cortisol a stress hormone, but it is also responsible for helping to metabolize food through a series of insulin releases. In addition, cortisol is closely connected to insulin resistance, another suspected factor in the list of physiological aspects of addiction.
