Quoteboffin.co.uk Welcomes New Research on the Prevention and Treatment of Alzheimer’s

A study published in The Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology has suggested that the eating habits of those suffering from Alzheimer’s may have an effect on their cognitive abilities.

The research involved two groups of mice being fed two different diets over the course of 5 months. A precious study had shown that foods rich in methionine – an amino acid – were able to increase the symptoms of dementia within mice, and as a result scientists deduced that it may be effective in the increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

The most recent study sought then to determine if the methionine induced effects could be counteracted and even reversed. For 3 months one group of mice was fed a methionine filled diet, whilst the other group ate a healthy, balanced diet. The mice on the methionine diet were then introduced to a healthy menu, and the results were analysed after another 2 months.

The scientists found that the negative effects suffered following the 3 month period eating the amino acid had been reversed. The discovery demonstrated the capability of the brain to counteract the damaging effects it has endured. However, the study is far from conclusive, not least due to the fact that the test subjects were mice.

There is uncertainty regarding the applicability of such results to humans.

Rebecca Wood, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Research Trust commented on the findings, reminding us that:

“This research is on mice, but the Alzheimer’s Trust is supporting work looking at the effects of this type of diet on people. We look forward to the results but at the moment we don’t yet know if this type of diet could have beneficial effects for people with Alzheimer’s.”

Health insurance comparison site Quoteboffin.co.uk have given their backing to the research findings, insisting that:

“Any investigation into the causes and potential treatments for this disease are crucial, as research is the main tool we have in the battle against Alzheimer’s.”

Another piece of research carried out recently, revealed that people with larger craniums possess better cognitive abilities, including memory and thinking skills. 270 patients were recruited for the trials, the results of which were published in the Neurology journal.

Regular Exposure To Agricultural Pesticides Might Increase The Risk Of Parkinson’s Disease

Regular exposure to agricultural pesticides might increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease (PD), according to a study published in Archives of Neurology. More exposure to pesticides means a higher chance of the neurological illness, research reports.

“While the causes of PD are still not clear,” says Kay Mixson Jenkins, author of the new children’s book Who Is Pee Dee?, “hardcore chemicals used for treating crops can’t be that good for people in any event.”

Ms. Jenkins was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when she was just thirty-four. She decided to write her book to help her children understand this devastating disease. The story follows a young boy named Colt as he tries to deal with his mother’s chronic illness.

Based on National Parkinson Foundation estimations, almost 1.5 million Americans currently have PD. It’s the second-largest neurological disorder (after Alzheimer’s) in the United States.

The illness typically develops later in life and often impairs motor skills, speech and other functions.

Many scientists and researchers believe that environmental factors can be linked to the illness:

• Aberdeen University Medical School found that people exposed to high levels of pesticides were forty-one percent more likely to develop the condition compared to people who had never been exposed; those exposed to low levels were thirteen percent more likely.

• Environmental Health News reports that the rates of Parkinson’s disease appear higher among farmers and rural residents.

• A Danish cohort study found an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease in agricultural workers.

• Emory University reported growing evidence suggesting that exposure to pesticides increases the risk of Parkinson’s disease.

• Researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center found that people with Parkinson’s disease have significantly higher blood levels of a particular pesticide than healthy people.

“I hope studies and facts like these will help bring the government’s attention to the environmental problems our society faces today,” says Ms. Jenkins. “If we can simply protect our environment and be greener, who knows? Maybe the number of Parkinson’s cases will go down.”

In addition to writing Who Is Pee Dee?, Ms. Jenkins is a leader in a nationwide effort to raise awareness about PD. As the founder of Parkinson’s in the Park, an affiliated chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation, Ms. Jenkins has created an outreach program that encourages families and friends to participate in the treatment of PD patients.

Kay Mixson Jenkins is also the Georgia state co-coordinator for the Parkinson’s Action Network, leads the Effingham County Parkinson’s support group and was selected as a Parkinson’s patient advocate for UCB, Inc.

Lower Eye Surgery Gains Popularity with Women

The Hospital Group has reported that lower eye surgery is becoming increasingly popular amongst women. More lower eye surgery procedures were performed than upper eyelid lifts in 2009, as well as there being a larger percentage increase in the procedure over the past 5 years.

The appearance of loose droopy skin under the eyes can be very ageing and give a“sad” look to your face. Sun and smoking can accelerate the signs of ageing, while others are more prone to inherit the condition. This condition can easily be remedied with a simple eyelift procedure.

Eye bag removal is a common and simple plastic surgery procedure which can deliver dramatic results, making the eye area look more youthful, attractive and alive. The procedure is becoming increasingly popular in men as well as women. The Hospital Group can help you achieve a more bright-eyed, wide awake look.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “THG Comment: – “We see more patients in need of eye bag removal than eye lift surgery and this procedure is a lot more popular. Eye bags can also be caused through stress, smoking and genetic factors.”

The Hospital Group is one of the UK’s leading providers of cosmetic surgery, number one in obesity surgery and tummy tuck experts. So whatever your requirements, you can rest assured in the safe hands of the professionalism and experience that THG has to offer.

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has risen to become the UK’s biggest weight loss surgery providers, performing more gastric band procedures last year than the NHS. Breast Reduction Surgery on the Increase

The Hospital Group has reported that the number of women choosing to have a breast reduction has gone up by 78% since 2005.

The main reason for considering a breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty is that an over generous bust size can be distressing or uncomfortable.

Large breasts can often be the cause of significant physical discomfort and self-consciousness. Breast reduction surgery could significantly help to relieve the constant backache or shoulder pain associated with big breasts.

Regarding the reductions, a spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “We have seen a noticeable rise in women wanting to feel less self-conscious about their bodies. A lot of women with naturally large breasts are embarrassed because of their size and feel insecure as they can attract a lot of unwanted attention.”

The Hospital Group is one of the UK’s leading providers of Plastic Surgery, number one in Obesity Surgery and Breast Enlargement experts. So whatever your requirements, you’re in safe hands!

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has risen to become the UK’s biggest weight loss surgery providers, performing more gastric band procedures last year than the NHS.

Long Term Care Insurance Still Possible

There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it—senior citizens will need some kind of long term care at one point in their life, 75 percent to be exact. The problem, however, is that coverage can cost upwards of $70,000 a year, a sum many seniors don’t possess. Fortunately, a recently published article on InsuranceAgents.com reveals that there are ways to still obtain affordable long term care insurance.

Long term care consists of a wide array of health and support services such as personal care and assistance with all daily living activities. The cost of such services depends on many factors, particularly the type and amount of care needed, the healthcare provider and the area in which a person resides in.

The sooner a person obtains long term care insurance, however, the more affordable it will be. The article, “Long Term Care Insurance: How To Save Big,” suggests to senior citizens seven different ways they can save on long term care. Some of them include:

1. Obtaining health insurance quotes for long term care and comparing policies, rates and providers

2. Applicants should apply with a spouse, as many providers will offer a major discount for couples who seek coverage together.

3. While the cost is as low as it’s going to get, try to get as much coverage as possible—weigh benefits against cost and remember that maximum coverage will come in handy down the road.

4. An applicant’s membership in a group—like AAA, or a homeowners association or alumni organization, for examples—may get lower rates, too.

5. Seeking tax credits or tax deductions. The federal government rewards those who invest in long term care insurance.

Senior citizens on the hunt for affordable but extensive long term care insurance should first and foremost obtain free health insurance quotes online before sitting down with a health insurance agent.

Breast Lift not Enough Anymore

The Hospital Group has reported that during 2009, more than twice as many women have opted for a breast lift with implants, as opposed to just a breast lift.

A mastopexy or breast lift procedure suits women whose breasts may be pendulous as a result of a relaxation of the ligaments due to weight loss, age or having children. The actual size may be fine but the breasts have lost their volume and tone or the nipples may point downward. However, if extra volume is required then a breast uplift procedure may be combined with implants for the best overall result. This has become an increasingly popular method for rejuvenating the appearance of the breasts.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “A breast uplift with implants has become more of a popular option with women wanting to increase the size of their chest as well as the shape”

Those looking to undergo the procedure are sure to achieve better results that ever before. Modern breast implants are available in a variety of types and sizes. You can easily achieve the look you are after with by consulting with one of the many expert surgeons available.

Half Of All Women With Implants Are Having Their Old Breast Implants Replaced

The Hospital Group has reported that over the past 3 years, half of all women with implants are having their old breast implants replaced.

Breast enlargements, or “boob jobs” as they are more commonly known, are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available. This procedure helps women achieve a “curvier” form. It is popular with women who are naturally small busted or those that have noticed a change in their bust size due to weight loss, breastfeeding or the natural ageing process.

Regarding implant replacement, a spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “A lot of our breast augmentation patients wish they had gone a little bigger so therefore choose to have another procedure with larger implants. Obesity and Society

Obese and overweight people are forecast to cost the nation £50 billion – half the NHS budget for a year – by 2050 if the trend continues unchecked, with diabetes the biggest draw on these figures.*

The NHS spends an estimated £600m a year on treating diabetes – the largest in primary care – and tackling obesity levels in Britain could save an estimate £950 per person each year. **

As well as drug spend, hospital admissions for Britans with problems caused by weight-related diabetes also doubled, from 7,000 in 2003-04 to 14,320 in 2007-08. **

In five years, the total numbers of people admitted to hospital as a direct result of obesity rose by 190 per cent, with 5,056 admissions in 2007-08. **

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “Barely a day passes without the cost of obesity on the NHS being mentioned. It’s a very real fact that as well needing to tackle obesity on a personal level, the nation’s obese must consider what a huge drain their weight-induced health problems are on the NHS.

“Having spent nine years working in obesity in the NHS, I feel that the only way to curb the epidemic is with the support of private healthcare, such as gastric band surgery at The Hospital Group.”

A report on the matter produced these key findings:

• Awareness of the problem is not low. †
• 49% of those questioned blamed their poor diet for their size. †
• 63% blamed a lack of exercise. †
• Stress was blamed by 20% of those questioned. †
• 14% blamed their genes and the same percentage said that they were too busy to do anything about their weight. †
• Giving up smoking, large breasts, beer and ‘emptiness’ were also accredited. †

A separate survey revealed that some overweight people believe their weight has affected their careers. The following are some interesting comments that came from this survey:

“I think it’s natural that people have less respect for you if you are overweight.”

“Some people look upon overweight people negatively in that they feel they cannot control how they eat, which may reflect in working life.”

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2056 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 5th-7th October 2009. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

OnePoll questioned 4000 adults between 19-21 October 2009. The survey was carried out online and the panel used was aged 16+ and nationally representative.

Mountainside Cites That Heroin And Opiate Use Is On The Rise

The numbers of individuals entering inpatient drug rehab for heroin and opiate addiction continues to increase. In Afghanistan and Pakistan the opium (heroin) trade is tightly controlled by al Qaeda and the Taliban, and despite the war the efforts, the production of heroin and opium has dramatically increased – heroin is still dirt-cheap and readily purchased on the streets of Kabul and sold in short distance of military barracks. This phenomena has caused many analysts to be alarmed that our troops, reacting to the stress of war and ease of access of drugs, may develop drug habits like many of the soldiers in the Vietnam era.

The prevalence of cheap heroin has become a major issue in this country for teenagers who have begun experimenting with the drug as it is often cheaper and easier to buy than alcohol. Last year more than 46 people died from heroin overdoses in Nassau County, NY – this represents a 75 percent year over year increase. One of these individuals was Natalie Ciappa, a National Honor Society member at her high school on Long Island.

Recently, this past Wed, more than 1,000 parents gathered at a hosted forum in Smithtown, NY to voice their support and concern for the drug problem.

Directly correlated to the increase in heroin addiction has been the number of deaths by people using methadone. Many individuals who enter heroin rehab, also have tried methadone. A recent study published by the National Drug Intelligence Center (DIC indicates a 390% increase in deaths due to methadone since 1999. Increase in methadone deaths attributed to the drugs emerging popularity for use with chronic pain sufferers as well as increased diversion (stealing from legitimate sources and diverting to the street for illegal consumption).

The highest overdose rate was experienced among those between the ages of 15 – 24.

Opiate addiction or dependence which is recognized as a central nervous system disorder, can affect anyone from any walk of life. Opiate addiction is essentially what happens after someone intakes opiods such as Heroin, Oxycontin, Percocet and others for extended periods of time causing the brain to stop producing the vital chemical dopamine (the body’s natural response to pain as well as other physical activities) which in turn causes an uncontrollable urge for that person to have to ingest more of the drug they had been taking just to feel “normal”.

Opiate dependence while chemically the same as addiction more often occurs in people who have suffered from chronic or severe pain and have to be on this type of medication for an extended period of time. Normally to avoid any unpleasant effects the person’s physician will taper them off of the medication so the patient’s brain function has a chance to return to normal. Once the brain is actively producing dopamine and as long as the patient is no longer in pain, the medication is no longer medically needed.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center has been helping people recover from alcoholism for over 12 years. Located in Connecticut, just north of New York City, its national program continues to help people from all over the country.

Executive Rehab Promotes Physical And Psychological Healing

Cliffside Malibu, a prestigious drug rehab facility on the Malibu coast, has long been a leading light in the California treatment community. Now, the center is pleased to announce its renewed commitment to helping clients achieve holistic recovery.

Drug addiction is both a physical and psychological disease. By the same token, drug rehab must promote both physical and psychological healing. The best drug rehab facilities are those which help clients get better in mind as well as in body, in substance as well as in spirit. In the end, there’s no other way to ensure the long-term success of the recovery process.

Those principles, in turn, are the bedrock of Cliffside Malibu’s holistic treatment philosophy.

With its expert caregivers and posh amenities, Cliffside Malibu is a world-class institution. The center has always catered to an elite clientele. Now Cliffside is expanding its mission, with the goal of delivering the best care on the planet to those individuals who need it. At Cliffside Malibu, nothing less than comprehensive excellence will ever be acceptable.

“There are no partial victories in the fight against addiction,” said Cliffside Malibu Clinical Director Patricia Freeberry. “Real healing must be both physical and psychological in nature, which is why our exclusive drug rehab programs are explicitly designed to treat the whole patient. We believe that our long record of success proves the effectiveness of our approach.”

Unfortunately, that commitment to holistic healing is precisely what distinguishes Cliffside from its competitors.

It’s easy for a drug rehab center to pay lip service to the importance of holistic treatment. It’s harder, though, for that facility to live out the meaning of its words. The truth is that many of the most “exclusive” drug rehabs in Los Angeles deliver one-dimensional care to their clients. It should come as no surprise that those institutions routinely fall short in their efforts to promote lasting wellness.

Cliffside Malibu is a luxury drug and alcohol rehab center located in Malibu, California. For further details about Cliffside’s treatment methods, amenities, or other general information about rehab centers, please call 1-800-501-1988 or visit our Web site at www.cliffsidemalibu.com.

Youth-Boosting Ops Are Booming

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider has revealed that youth-boosting ops are booming, as older workers look to compete with their younger counterparts.

Sagging skin with lines and wrinkles on the face and neck are sure giveaways of the signs of ageing, as skin looses elasticity. Enquiries show that women are who were thinking about a facelift also considered a combination of a neck lift and facelift together, in order to banish the turkey neck and sagging jowls in one fell swoop.

Liz Dale, Director of The Harley Medical Group, said: “Redundancy and unemployment levels are increasing and people are looking for ways to keep themselves one step ahead of their colleagues. Most patients think about surgery for many years and office competition simply acts as a catalyst.”

Liz Dale added: “This latest ‘age preventing’ trend within the +50 market is noticeable across our 26 clinics. It appears that older workers feel it’s important to invest in their looks, despite cutting back across other areas.”

For many patients it is all about feeling more confident as they get older; there is increased pressure in the work place as it is. The stress takes its toll on health and appearance and this will inevitably affect the way in which people feel about themselves. All these feel good procedures make a significant difference to self esteem and that confidence impacts on other areas in life.

Rehab doesn’t happen in a vacuum. On the contrary, every drug treatment center is affected by its geographical location. The best treatment facilities are almost invariably those situated in the most hospitable physical surroundings. In the end, there’s simply no substitute for the pristine seclusion of the Malibu coast.

Those considerations, in turn, are at the heart of Sunset Malibu’s treatment philosophy.

With its world-class caregivers and elegant accommodations, Sunset Malibu is an unparalleled recovery destination. The center has always catered to upscale clients from every corner of the globe. Now Sunset is renewing its commitment to its core values, with the goal of delivering life-changing care to individuals who seek it. At Sunset Malibu, the client’s personal comfort always comes first.

“Rehab is a grueling process,” said Sunset Malibu Program Director Dr. Georgina Smith. “To complete it successfully, patients need to feel wholly at ease in their healing environment. Our secluded private estate is the perfect place to achieve that sort of emotional and spiritual peace.”

Unfortunately, Sunset’s unique ambiance can’t be replicated by its competitors in other parts of the country.

Most drug treatment centers really do try to help their clients. But every clinic is limited by its physical location. The fact of the matter is that a drug treatment center in New York can’t possibly offer clients the same experience that they would enjoy at a drug treatment center in Malibu. The result, of course, is that New York drug treatment facilities can’t be trusted to promote meaningful and lasting wellness.

Sunset Malibu is a luxury alcohol and drug treatment center located in Malibu, California.
